Four or five of them were printed in Quintets - my first book of poems - published in 1894. I am fully conscious of their imperfections, but various testimony already elicited seems to indicate that they have some merit. Their aim is to teach that in and through all human love and hate there is a dominating divine love which attains its perfect mani festation in Christ and Christianity, by whose power and victory alone can any human soul or the world at large find the true law of its own highest evolution, hence its. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colors of Life: Poems and Songs and Sonnets It is impossible for me, feeling and watching the eternal tidal currents of liberty and individual life against tyranny and the type, which are clashing and rearing up their highest crimsoned waves at this hour, to publish without some word of depre cation a book of poems so personal for the most part, and reflecting my own too easy taste of free dom rather than my share in the world's struggle towards an age and universe of it. That struggle has always occupied my thoughts, and often my energies, and yet I have never identified myself with it or found my undivided being there. I have found that rather in individual experience and in those moments of energetic idleness when the life of universal nature seemed to come to its bloom of realization in my consciousness. Life is older than liberty. It is greater than revolution. It burns in both camps. And life is what I love. And though I love life for all men and women, andso inevitably stand in the ranks of revolution against the cruel system of these times, I loved it first for myself. Its essence - the essence of life is variety and specific depth, and it can not be found in monotonous consecration to a general principle. Therefore I have feared and avoided this consecration, which earnest friends for some reason always expect me to exemplify, and my poetry has never entered, even so deeply as it might, into those tempests of social change that are coloring our thoughts today. Poetry that has life for its subject, and untem pered reality, is rather expected to manifest that irregular flow and exuberance of material over structure with which Walt Whitman challenged the world. In America at least the freedom and poignant candor of strong art is associated with the tradition that he founded, and little is granted to that other tradition which finds its original in Edgar Allan Poe. There existed in Europe, how ever, a succession of poets whose eyes turned back in admiration to Poe, and they were the poets of reality and those who touched the mood of social revolt. And for my part I think there is a mod ern validity in the attitudes of both these poets, and a certain adjudication between them which a perfectly impersonal science might propose. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “Love's Labour's Lost (The Unabridged Play) + The Classic Biography: The Life of William Shakespeare” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Love's Labour's Lost is one of William Shakespeare's early comedies, believed to have been written in the mid-1590s and first published in 1598. It follows the King of Navarre and his three companions as they attempt to foreswear the company of women for three years of study and fasting, and their subsequent infatuation with the Princess of Aquitaine and her ladies. In an untraditional ending for a comedy, the play closes with the death of the Princess's father, and all weddings are delayed for a year. Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enlightening and entertaining collection of the most esteemed love poems in the English canon, retold in contemporary language everyone can understand James Anthony has long enjoyed poetry with a strict adherence to beat, rhythm, and rhyming patterns, which he likens to the very best pop songs. This drew him to the rewarding 14-line structure of Shakespeare’s sonnets, yet he often found their abstract language frustratingly unintelligible. One day, out of curiosity, he rewrote Sonnet 18—Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day—line-by-line, in the strict five-beat iambic pentameter and rhyming patterns of the original, but in a contemporary language a modern reader could easily understand. The meaning and sentiment—difficult to spot, initially—came to life, revealing new intricacies in the workings of Shakespeare's heart. And so, James embarked on a full-time, year-long project to rewrite all 154 of the Bard's eternal verses creating SHAKESPEARE'S SONNETS, RETOLD. This collection of masterful reinterpretations brilliantly demystifies and breathes new life into Shakespeare's work, demonstrating the continued resonance of a playwright whose popularity remains over 400 years after his death. Now, the passion, heartbreak, deception, reconciliation, and mortality of Shakespeare’s originals can be understood by all, without the need to cross reference to an enjoyment-sapping study-guide. Coming with a foreword by Stephen Fry, this is a stunning collection of beautiful love poems made new.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American author Countess Anna de Bremont published Sonnets and Love Poems in 1892. She dedicated this anthology to her deceased husband, Count Leon de Bremont, from whom she got her title. It appears that her distinguished French spouse died early in her adult life, leaving her to wax romantic about his memory and use sonnets as her vehicle in unloading her grief and loneliness at his passing. But rather than think that this volume is nothing but a collection of mournful sonnets by a sentimental widow, consider the other poetic treasures that lay printed on the other pages of this book. The other short literary pieces are wistfully romantic, decidedly passionate, and are infused with a youthful, womanly charm - as if the author has never known grief. Countess de Bremont, who counted Oscar Wilde as one of her friends, does not only write of romantic fantasies and musings. She also dedicates a few verses to Christmas, her mother, some of her friends, and to characters and people she have met or observed. This work is apt for those who have a real appreciation and love for prose and poetry, especially those dating around the turn of the 20th century. This also makes a good gift option for the literary inclined and for female loved ones who are partial to romantic sighings written in verse.
