Book Synopsis From Bayle to the Batavian Revolution by : Wiep van Bunge
Download or read book From Bayle to the Batavian Revolution written by Wiep van Bunge and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to assess the part played by philosophy in the eighteenth-century Dutch Enlightenment. Following Bayle’s death and the demise of the radical Enlightenment, Dutch philosophers soon embraced Newtonianism and by the second half of the century Wolffianism also started to spread among Dutch academics. Once the Republic started to crumble, Dutch enlightened discourse took a political turn, but with the exception of Frans Hemsterhuis, who chose to ignore the political crisis, it failed to produce original philosophers. By the end of the century, the majority of Dutch philosophers typically refused to embrace Kant’s transcendental project as well as his cosmopolitanism. Instead, early nineteenth-century Dutch professors of philosophy preferred to cultivate their joint admiration for the Ancients.
Book Synopsis Charles Areskine’s Library by : Karen Baston
Download or read book Charles Areskine’s Library written by Karen Baston and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Charles Areskine’s Library, Karen Baston uses a detailed study of an eighteenth-century Scottish advocate’s private book collection to explore key themes in the Scottish Enlightenment including secularisation, modernisation, internationalisation, and the development of legal literature in Scotland. By exploring a surviving manuscript dated 1731that lists a Scottish lawyer’s library, Karen Baston demonstrates that the books Charles Areskine owned, used in practice, and read for pleasure embedded him in the intellectual culture that expanded in early eighteenth-century Scotland. Areskine and his fellow advocates emerged as scholarly and sociable gentlemen who led their nation. Lawyers were integral to and integrated with the Scottish society that allowed the Scottish Enlightenment to take root and flourish within Areskine’s lifetime.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of European Legal History by : Heikki Pihlajamäki
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of European Legal History written by Heikki Pihlajamäki and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 1217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European law, including both civil law and common law, has gone through several major phases of expansion in the world. European legal history thus also is a history of legal transplants and cultural borrowings, which national legal histories as products of nineteenth-century historicism have until recently largely left unconsidered. The Handbook of European Legal History supplies its readers with an overview of the different phases of European legal history in the light of today's state-of-the-art research, by offering cutting-edge views on research questions currently emerging in international discussions. The Handbook takes a broad approach to its subject matter both nationally and systemically. Unlike traditional European legal histories, which tend to concentrate on "heartlands" of Europe (notably Italy and Germany), the Europe of the Handbook is more versatile and nuanced, taking into consideration the legal developments in Europe's geographical "fringes" such as Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. The Handbook covers all major time periods, from the ancient Greek law to the twenty-first century. Contributors include acknowledged leaders in the field as well as rising talents, representing a wide range of legal systems, methodologies, areas of expertise and research agendas.
Book Synopsis The Sovereign and the Prophets by : Atsuko Fukuoka
Download or read book The Sovereign and the Prophets written by Atsuko Fukuoka and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing key biblical topics recurrent in Grotian and Hobbesian discourses on the church-state relationship, The Sovereign and the Prophets examines Spinoza’s Old Testament interpretation in the Theologico-political Treatise and elucidates his effort to establish what Hobbes could not adequately offer to the Dutch: the liberty to philosophize. Fukuoka develops an original method for understanding seventeenth-century biblical arguments as a shared political paradigm. Her in-depth analysis reveals the discourses that converged on the question, ‘Who stands immediately under God to mediate His will to the people?’ This subtly nuanced theme not only linked major theoreticians diachronically—from the Remonstrants such as Grotius to the anti-Hobbesian jurist Ulrik Huber (1636–1694)—but also synchronically built the axis of resonances and dissonances between Leviathan and the Theologico-political Treatise.
Book Synopsis Conflicts of Empires by : Jonathan Israel
Download or read book Conflicts of Empires written by Jonathan Israel and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1997-07-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period between the late 16th and the early 18th centuries was one of tremendous, and ultimately decisive, shifts in the balance of political, military and economic power in both Europe and the wider world. In these essays Jonathan Israel argues that Spain's efforts to maintain her hegemony continued, for a number of reasons, to be centred on the Low Countries. This had as much to do with her attempts to check the rise of France and manipulate the affairs of Germany as it had with her long war with the Dutch, Spain's overwhelming dominance in the 1580s seemed unassailable, yet by the Peace of Utrecht in 1713 its greatness had been eclipsed, leaving supremacy to Britain, France and, in commercial terms, the Dutch.
Book Synopsis Legal Scholarship and Doctrines of Private Law, 13th-18th centuries by : Robert Feenstra
Download or read book Legal Scholarship and Doctrines of Private Law, 13th-18th centuries written by Robert Feenstra and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emphasis in this present volume of Professor Feenstra’s studies lies on the post-medieval development of legal scholarship. The opening two studies are concerned with the University of Orléans in the 13th-14th centuries, but from there the centre of interest shifts to the early modern Netherlands. Two important themes are the teaching of law, especially at the legal faculties of Leyden and Franeker, and the doctrines of private law (especially property, contract, and succession). The figure of Hugo Grotius, his sources and his influence, dominate these articles.

Book Synopsis Pierre Bayle (1647-1706), le philosophe de Rotterdam: Philosophy, Religion and Reception by :
Download or read book Pierre Bayle (1647-1706), le philosophe de Rotterdam: Philosophy, Religion and Reception written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains 15 essays by philosophers, theologians and historians from the Netherlands, France, Italy, England and the United States on Pierre Bayle (1647-1706), the French Protestant who found refuge in Rotterdam just before the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). From the early 1680s onward, Bayle published a series of seminal works, culminating in his Dictionaire historique et critique (1697), that is generally regarded to have served as the "arsenal" of the Enlightenment. Over the last few decades, Bayle has been rediscovered as one of the key authors of the early Enlightenment, but experts have found it extremely difficult to come to any agreement concerning his ultimate position, most notably concerning the relationship between faith and philosophy. In this volume both Bayle's philosophy and his theological views are assessed as well as his impact on the Enlightenment and beyond. Contributors include: Hubert Bost, Hans Bots, Wiep van Bunge, Justin Champion, Jonathan Israel, Eric Jorink, Lenie van Lieshout, Antony McKenna, Gianni Paganini, Marie-Hélène Quéval, Todd Ryan, Adam Sutcliffe, Rob van der Schoor, Theo Verbeek, and Jan de Vet.
