S One of the earliest recollections of my childhood is r: concerned with the subject of this Memoir. When-; I was about five years old, I accompanied my father I and mother to London, on a visit to my uncle, then Mr. William Page Wood. As we were going up to stairs on our arrival, my eye was caught by an oil portrait of a man with red hair and a large mouth, which hung over the door of the drawing-room, -and I exclaimed, 'I don't think he's a pretty man.' The justice of the criticism was not denied. My mother allowed that he was not 'pretty, ' but informed me that he was very good, and, moreover, that he was my uncles greatest friend. And from that time forward I became very curious about the good man, as I was taught to call him. That portrait on the staircase was one of the things I looked forward to seeing on our annual visits to London.
