Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Benjamin Morgan Palmer Although in sympathy with Dr. Dabney on State and Church questions, he was, unlike him, an original secessionist, and, though strong in convictions and virile in expression, he was not so extreme in either; and his life furnishes material for the sketching of a portrait in which the skilful limner of Dab nev need not repeat himself. Book excerpt: This little volume does not profess to be an exhaustive discussion of a subject which has so many sides, as this of prayer. But so far as known to the author, there is no book which collects and refutes the various objections urged by different classes of sceptics. Nor is there to be found anywhere a full articulation of prayer in the system of grace. There seemed to be a gap here which ought to be filled, which is all that this essay attempts. - Introductory note.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century and a half after the conclusion of the Civil War, the legacy of the Confederate States of America continues to influence national politics in profound ways. Drawing on magazines such as Southern Partisan and publications from the secessionist organization League of the South, as well as DixieNet and additional newsletters and websites, Neo-Confederacy probes the veneer of this movement to reveal goals far more extensive than a mere celebration of ancestry. Incorporating groundbreaking essays on the Neo-Confederacy movement, this eye-opening work encompasses such topics as literature and music; the ethnic and cultural claims of white, Anglo-Celtic southerners; gender and sexuality; the origins and development of the movement and its tenets; and ultimately its nationalization into a far-reaching factor in reactionary conservative politics. The first book-length study of this powerful sociological phenomenon, Neo-Confederacy raises crucial questions about the mainstreaming of an ideology that, founded on notions of white supremacy, has made curiously strong inroads throughout the realms of sexist, homophobic, anti-immigrant, and often "orthodox" Christian populations that would otherwise have no affiliation with the regionality or heritage traditionally associated with Confederate history.

Book excerpt: For twenty years in the mid-eighteenth century a scarcely-known village on the Yorkshire moors became one of the strongest centres of Christian influence in England. George Whitfield and John Wesley were often drawn there, along with many others. The explanation lay in the life and ministry of William Grimshaw, curate of Haworth from 1742 until his death in 1763. 'A few such as him would make a nation tremble', wrote Wesley, 'he carries fire wherever he goes.' Under Grimshaw's ministry the church's empty pews filled and non-attenders were startled to hear, 'If you will not come to church, you shall hear me at home'. Revival followed and persecution. But not even Grimshaw's opponents could deny that Haworth people now worked, and cared for their families, as they had never done before. What Charles Wesley called his 'triumphant love' was Grimshaw's supreme motivation. It led him to break through ecclesiastical rules and to preach far and wide: 'The most indefatigable minister of Christ that ever was in England' (William Romaine). It led also to his eagerness to help all -- Church of England or Dissenter, Moravian or Methodist, Arminian or Calvinist: 'I love Christians, true Christians of all parties. I do love them; I will love them; and none shall make me do otherwise.' - from dust jacket.

Book excerpt: An exploration of the ways a particular religious tradition and a distinct social context have interacted over a 300-year period, including the unique story of the oldest and largest African American Calvinist community in America The South Carolina low country has long been regarded—not only in popular imagination and paperback novels but also by respected scholars—as a region dominated by what earlier historians called “a cavalier spirit” and by what later historians have simply described as “a wholehearted devotion to amusement and the neglect of religion and intellectual pursuits.” Such images of the low country have been powerful interpreters of the region because they have had some foundation in social and cultural realities. It is a thesis of this study, however, that there has been a strong Calvinist community in the Carolina low country since its establishment as a British colony and that this community (including in its membership both whites and after the 1740s significant numbers of African Americans) contradicts many of the images of the "received version" of the region. Rather than a devotion to amusement and a neglect of religion and intellectual interests, this community has been marked throughout most of its history by its disciplined religious life, its intellectual pursuits, and its work ethic.

This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860 initiated a heated debate throughout the South about what Republican control of the federal government would mean for the slaveholding states. During the secession crisis of the winter of 1860-61, Southerners spoke out and wrote prolifically on the subject, publishing their views in pamphlets that circulated widely. These tracts constituted a regional propaganda war in which Southerners vigorously debated how best to react to political developments on the national level. In this valuable reference work, Jon Wakelyn has collected twenty representative examples of this long-overlooked literature. Although the pamphlets reflect deep differences of opinion over what Lincoln's intentions were and how the South should respond, all indicate the centrality of slavery to the Southern way of life and reflect a pervasive fear of racial unrest. More generally, the pamphlets reveal a wealth of information about the South's political thought and self-identity at a defining moment in American history. The twenty items included here represent the views of leaders and opinion makers throughout the slaveholding states and are fully annotated. An additional sixty-five pamphlets are listed and briefly described in an appendix. Originally published in 1996.
