Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Death of Jeanne D'arc, Vol. 2 of 2: Called the Maid The Duke of Burgundy vouchsafed no answer to these demands. The Maid was worth a king's ransom at least, and that neither the Inquisition nor the University was likely to pay. Perhaps, also, he felt indignant at the first blush Of the request, that he would give her up to be burned. He had his honour to look to. She was a person Of such high chivalry, that there was no knight in Christendom whose fame overshadowed hers. By all the ordinary courtesies Of war, she was entitled to the privileges of a prisoner of war. She had been a generous foe, if a resolute and successful foe. Neither cruelty nor treachery could be laid to her charge. Her life was pure; her brief career most glorious. To him, personally, she had ap pealed as a prince Of France, to make peace with France; and throughout his alliance with England, he had never forgotten that he was a prince Of France, and that it was an alien race he had helped to her throne. The inevitable tendency of events was now towards the restoration Of Charles. It might be soon, or it might be late, but it would come. To sacrifice the heroine who had given events this forward impetus, might put a new difficulty between himself and the king. He did nothing, therefore; and Jean Of Luxembourg, whose prisoner the Maid more immediately was, frankly refused to give up his prize, unless well paid for her. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joan of Arc, born in Domremy in France in 1412, began to hear voices when she was thirteen and, believing they were directives from God, followed them - the the French court, to battle to wrest France from the Englis in the Hundred Years War, and to defeat and capture. She was put on trial for heresy and, on 30 may 1431, burned at the stake. Even today many people are fascinated by this teenage woman who persuaded her king to believe that she could lead her nation to victory. In the retrial of 1452-6 she was vindicated, but it took almost five hundred years after an English soldier declared 'we have burnt a saint' for the Catholic Church to conclude that she was indeed one. This new book is not merely an account of a life that was cut short; its focus is also on Joan's history, which in 1431 had just begun, and which, the author shows, was influenced just as much by the transformation in Anglo-French relations and by internal politics, issues of freedom and republicanism, and by changes in society regarding secularisation and belief, as by our response to the central issue of Joan's voice themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Politics of Myth, Stephen Knight studies nine figures still vividly alive, all of them appearing in twenty-first century film and television. Analysing how they relate to the major themes of Power, Resistance and Knowledge, he shows how fact and fiction mix to help us explore and understand the complexities of our world. Surprising mythic shifts occur across time. Robin Hood can be a tough anti-authoritarian, a genial aristocrat, a Saxon patriot; Queen Elizabeth I has been seen as a Protestant heroine, a love-lorn lady, even a grumpy manipulator. From Merlin's multiple manifestations and Sherlock Holmes's smoking habits to the ongoing arguments about Ned Kelly, this book explores the richness and the range of figures of myth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Dorian L. Alexander, Chris Bishop, David Budgen, Lewis Call, Lillian Céspedes González, Dominic Davies, Sean Eedy, Adam Fotos, Michael Goodrum, Simon Gough, David Hitchcock, Robert Hutton, Iain A. MacInnes, Małgorzata Olsza, Philip Smith, Edward Still, and Jing Zhang In Drawing the Past, Volume 2: Comics and the Historical Imagination in the World, contributors seek to examine the many ways in which history worldwide has been explored and (re)represented through comics and how history is a complex construction of imagination, reality, and manipulation. Through a close analysis of such works as V for Vendetta, Maus, and Persepolis, this volume contends that comics are a form of mediation between sources (both primary and secondary) and the reader. Historical comics are not drawn from memory but offer a nonliteral interpretation of an object (re)constructed in the creator’s mind. Indeed, when it comes to history, stretching the limits of the imagination only serves to aid in our understanding of the past and, through that understanding, shape ourselves and our futures. This volume, the second in a two-volume series, is divided into three sections: History and Form, Historical Trauma, and Mythic Histories. The first section considers the relationship between history and the comic book form. The second section engages academic scholarship on comics that has recurring interest in the representation of war and trauma. The final section looks at mythic histories that consciously play with events that did not occur but nonetheless inflect our understanding of history. Contributors to the volume also explore questions of diversity and relationality, addressing differences between nations and the cultural, historical, and economic threads that bind them together, however loosely, and however much those bonds might chafe. Together, both volumes bring together a range of different approaches to diverse material and feature remarkable scholars from all over the world.
