The paintings have been restored by Venetian Heritage with the generous support of Bulgari. The large canvases showing Saint Jerome in the Desert and Saint Agatha Visited in Prison by Saint Peter were commissioned by Francesco degli Alberi, the priest of the church of Saint Mary of the Angels in Murano, and painted by Veronese in 1566. They were originally held in the private chapel built alongside the church on the priest?s orders. In 1667 the paintings were relocated to the nearby church of Saint Mary of the Angels. The very elaborate frames in gilded wood were most likely sculpted around this period. The church was deconsecrated during the French occupation at the beginning of the 19th century, and some of the works kept there were transferred to the neighbouring church of San Pietro Martire. The paintings and the frames were in a poor state: the heavy over-varnishing applied over the years had darkened, making it difficult to appreciate Veronese?s brilliant colours, while the gilt was peeling off the frames, leaving visible gaps. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.
