He has all the skill he needs to find each man present at the fight circle that night and park a pile of hell on his front porch. But when he tips his hand he becomes the hunted, and the war he thought would be settled in a single attack becomes a battle of attrition with violence coming at him from all angles. When the battle escalates to the unthinkable, Baer concots a retribution so horrifying it gives him pause. Book Synopsis Confronting Climate Crises through Education by : Rebecca L. Young
Download or read book Confronting Climate Crises through Education written by Rebecca L. Young and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronting Climate Crises through Education: Reading Our Way Forward envisions the responsibility of public education to engage a citizenry more prepared to address the challenges of a changing world. Young advocates a paradigm shift that positions ecopedagogy as the central organizing principle of curriculum and assessment design. Each chapter outlines ways literature can serve as a cultural lens for examining the complex patterns of contexts behind our most pressing climate concerns, including potential solutions these patterns may illuminate. A focus on fiction and non-fiction exemplars that can provide such a lens illustrates practical steps educators can take to develop instruction around the immediately relevant environmental crises we are experiencing and to inspire more ecologically conscious, globally-minded problem-solvers prepared to confront them.
Book Synopsis Sophist Kings by : Vernon L. Provencal
Download or read book Sophist Kings written by Vernon L. Provencal and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sophist Kings: Persians as Other sets forth a reading of Herodotus' Histories that highlights the consistency with which the Persians are depicted as sophists and Persian culture is infused with a sophistic ideology. The Persians as the Greek 'other' have a crucial role throughout Herodotus' Histories, but their characterisation is far divorced from historical reality. Instead, from their first appearance at the beginning of the Histories, Herodotus presents the Persians as adept in the argumentation of Greek sophists active in mid-5th century Athens. Moreover, Herodotus' construct of the Sophist King, in whom political reason serves human ambition, is used to explain the Achaemenid model of kingship whose rule is grounded in a theological knowledge of cosmic order and of divine justice as the political good. This original and in-depth study explores how the ideology which Herodotus ascribes to the Persians comes directly from fifth-century sophists whose arguments served to justify Athenian imperialism. The volume connects the ideological conflict between panhellenism and imperialism in Herodotus' contemporary Greece to his representation of the past conflict between Greek freedom and Persian imperialism. Detecting a universal paradigm, Sophist Kings argues that Herodotus was suggesting the Athenians should regard their own empire as a betrayal of the common cause by which they led the Greeks to victory in the Persian wars.

Book excerpt: Lies, secrets, and a terrifying force within await Janelle in paradise… Moving to Florida should have been simple: start a new high school, make new friends, join the honor society, and make her strict father proud. But instead, she watches a mysterious boy materialize out of a dying hurricane. Gareth is cute, running from something, and has a spiral birthmark on his arm that matches Janelle's own. And there's something dangerous about him she can't put her finger on. But Gareth isn't the only one who isn't normal. As strange things happen around Janelle and an ominous force stirs within, she needs answers her suddenly distant father won't give. Without a mother and betrayed by her father, her only desperate hope for the truth is Gareth. And it's horrifying. An unspeakable nightmare is screaming closer, and if Janelle doesn't escape, she'll kill innocent people. Nothing will be sane or orderly again. For the first time in Janelle's life, she's breaking the rules. But running away might not be enough. Gareth is also fleeing, and those who pursue him also have their sights on Janelle… "The plot was fast-paced and constantly moving along. I was so intrigued by the Tempests that I had a hard time putting the book down. I am looking forward to the next book in the Destroyers series."--Reading Vacation "From the initial scene with the hurricane bearing down on Janelle and her dad, this story pulls you right along through to the surprising conclusion. Creative and entertaining, this book is good fun from start to finish."--GraceKrispy, MotherLode Blog "In all, Tempest is a wonderfully brisk read full of angst and self-discovery. Most of the characters ring true and are decently realized. The innovations are fresh and invigorating. Book Synopsis Forest Guardians, Forest Destroyers by : Tim Forsyth
Download or read book Forest Guardians, Forest Destroyers written by Tim Forsyth and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this far-reaching examination of environmental problems and politics in northern Thailand, Tim Forsyth and Andrew Walker analyze deforestation, water supply, soil erosion, use of agrochemicals, and biodiversity in order to challenge popularly held notions of environmental crisis. They argue that such crises have been used to support political objectives of state expansion and control in the uplands. They have also been used to justify the alternative directions advocated by an array of NGOs. In official and alternative discourses of economic development, the peoples living in Thailand's hill country are typically cast as either guardians or destroyers of forest resources, often depending on their ethnicity. Political and historical factors have created a simplistic, misleading, and often scientifically inaccurate environmental narrative: Hmong farmers, for example, are thought to exhibit environmentally destructive practices, whereas the Karen are seen as linked to and protective of their ancestral home. Forsyth and Walker reveal a much more complex relationship of hill farmers to the land, to other ethnic groups, and to the state. They conclude that current explanations fail to address the real causes of environmental problems and unnecessarily restrict the livelihoods of local people. The authors' critical assessment of simplistic environmental narratives, as well as their suggestions for finding solutions, will be valuable in international policy discussions about environmental issues in rapidly developing countries. Moreover, their redefinition of northern Thailand's environmental problems, and their analysis of how political influences have reinforced inappropriate policies, demonstrate new ways of analyzing how environmental science and knowledge are important arenas for political control. This book makes valuable contributions to Thai studies and more generally to the fields of environmental science, ecology, geography, anthropology, and political science, as well as to policy making and resource management in the developing world.
Download or read book Contra Mundum written by Adam Weishaupt and published by Magus Books. This book was released on with total page 1207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I'm plotting revolution against this lie that the majority has a monopoly of the truth. What are these truths that always bring the majority rallying round? Truths so elderly they are practically senile. And when a truth is as old as that, gentlemen, you can hardly tell it from a lie." – Dr Stockmann (in Henrik Ibsen's play An Enemy of the People) Contra Mundum is a handbook for all those who think there is something fundamentally wrong with the world. The ancient Gnostics claimed that the world was actually created and ruled by the Devil (the Demiurge), hence why everything is so hideous, unfair and horrific. Modern Gnostics (Illuminists) assert that the problem with the world is that it's ruled by the forces of unreason rather than reason, by Mythos rather than Logos, by silly story-based religions rather than mathematics, philosophy and science.
