Book Synopsis The Athenian Tribute Lists by : Benjamin Dean Meritt
Download or read book The Athenian Tribute Lists written by Benjamin Dean Meritt and published by ASCSA. This book was released on 1950-12 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third of four volumes presenting the standard text of, and commentary on, the inscriptions that have come to be known as the "Athenian Tribute Lists." Through the tribute lists, historians have been able to study the extent and nature of the Athenian empire that grew out of the Delian League established to combat the Persians in 478/7 B.C. The inscriptions provide evidence of the money paid to Athens by other members of the League after the tribute treasury was moved from Delos to Athens in 454 B.C. The texts persist from the 450s through to the 430s, after which the evidence is very fragmentary and often undatable. This volume provides a historical commentary on the inscriptions presented in detail in Volumes I and II, tying them into a history of the Athenian empire in narrative form.
Book Synopsis Sparta's First Attic War by : Paul Anthony Rahe
Download or read book Sparta's First Attic War written by Paul Anthony Rahe and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion volume to The Spartan Regime and The Grand Strategy of Classical Sparta that explores the collapse of the Spartan-Athenian alliance During the Persian Wars, Sparta and Athens worked in tandem to defeat what was, in terms of relative resources and power, the greatest empire in human history. For the decade and a half that followed, they continued their collaboration until a rift opened and an intense, strategic rivalry began. In a continuation of his series on ancient Sparta, noted historian Paul Rahe examines the grounds for their alliance, the reasons for its eventual collapse, and the first stage in an enduring conflict that would wreak havoc on Greece for six decades. Throughout, Rahe argues that the alliance between Sparta and Athens and their eventual rivalry were extensions of their domestic policy and that the grand strategy each articulated in the wake of the Persian Wars and the conflict that arose in due course grew out of the opposed material interests and moral imperatives inherent in their different regimes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of the architect of victory in the Persian Wars of 490 and 480/479 BC: “A valuable read for anyone with an interest in the ‘Golden Age’ of Greece.” —The NYMAS Review This is an exciting new biography of Themistocles of Athens, architect of the Greek victory over the Persian invasions of 490 BC and 480 to 479 BC. While his role in the Persian wars is naturally a major theme, Themistocles’ career before and after those conflicts is also considered in detail. Themistocles was a leading exponent of a new kind of populist politics in the young democracy of Athens, manipulating the practice of ostracism (exile) to get rid of his political rivals. Jeffrey Smith explains Themistocles’ rise to a position of virtual hegemony which allowed him to institute his far-sighted policy of preparation against the growing Persian threat. In particular he strengthened Athens’ fleet and thereby secured the support of the poor thetes, who found employment as rowers. During the first invasion, Themistocles fought, and possibly held joint command, at the decisive battle of Marathon. When the Persians struck again in 480, he commanded the fleet at Artemisium and Salamis. The latter battle he won by subterfuge, securing Athens’ liberation and survival. Ironically he was himself eventually ostracized by his fellow citizens—and ultimately entered Persian service, ending his days as governor of Magnesia in Asia Minor.
