In this powerful intervention into current biological thinking, Brian Goodwin argues that such genetic reductionism has important limits. Drawing on the sciences of complexity, the author shows how an understanding of the self-organizing patterns of networks is necessary for making sense of nature. Genes are important, but only as part of a process constrained by environment, physical laws, and the universal tendencies of complex adaptive systems. In a new preface for this edition, Goodwin reflects on the advances in both genetics and the sciences of complexity since the book's original publication.

Scott Fitzgerald meets Wes Anderson" (The Village Voice) in this inventive and witty debut about a young man’s quest to become a writer and the misadventures in life and love that take him around the globe—from the author of Why We Came to the City As early as he can remember, the narrator of this remarkable novel has wanted to become a writer. From the jazz clubs of Manhattan to the villages of Sri Lanka, Kristopher Jansma’s hopelessly unreliable—yet hopelessly earnest—narrator will be haunted by the success of his greatest friend and literary rival, the brilliant Julian McGann, and endlessly enamored with Evelyn, the green-eyed girl who got away. A profound exploration of the nature of truth and storytelling, this delightful picaresque tale heralds Jansma as a bold, new American voice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nature of Whiteness explores the intertwining of race and nature in postindependence Zimbabwe. Nature and environment have played prominent roles in white Zimbabwean identity, and when the political tide turned against white farmers after independence, nature was the most powerful resource they had at their disposal. In the 1970s, “Mlilo,” a private conservancy sharing boundaries with Hwange National Park, became the first site in Zimbabwe to experiment with “wildlife production,” and by the 1990s, wildlife tourism had become one of the most lucrative industries in the country. Mlilo attained international notoriety in 2015 as the place where Cecil the Lion was killed by a trophy hunter. Yuka Suzuki provides a balanced study of whiteness, the conservation of nature, and contested belonging in twenty-first-century southern Africa. The Nature of Whiteness is a fascinating account of human-animal relations and the interplay among categories of race and nature in this embattled landscape.

Winnick’s newest picture book, an adventuresome African safari presented through poems and full-color paintings. Readers begin at sunrise, climbing into a jeep for a bumpy ride to view the wondrous animals as they would on a real safari. All the poems are based on real observations of what animals do in the wild, related in an accessible way. There’s even a sighting, finally, of the elusive leopard, before returning to safari camp under a starry night. At the back of the book, further information is related about each animal. A fun, informational, educational adventure to read and reread. Ms. Winnick is an animal enthusiast, president of the Los Angeles Zoo Commission, and author of more than a dozen picture books, including Gemina: The Crooked-Neck Giraffe, How Lucky Got His Shoe, and Mr. Lincoln’s Whiskers.

Book excerpt: In the words of author Dianne Stewart, 'African proverbs reflect both the past and the present, and are as relevant to contemporary society as they were to traditional society.' As with so much of African culture, proverbs have been passed on in the oral tradition so it's rare to find such a treasure trove as this; from across Africa, Dianne has compiled a fascinating collection. The text is given in the language of origin, an English translation and an explanation of the meaning. They are divided into subject groups such as human nature, family life, good fortune, time, animals and nature. Whether you're looking for that special African gift or would like to add to your own collection of reference books, Wisdom from Africa is an excellent choice.

Book excerpt: Besides searching book reviews, an interview with the writer Tijan M. Sallah, a full report on the 6th Ethiopian International Film Festival, and a stimulating selection of creative writing (including a showcase of recent South African poetry), this issue of Matatu offers general essays on African women’s poetry, anglophone Cameroonian literature, and Zimbabwean fiction of the Gukurahundi period, along with studies of J.M. Coetzee, Kalpana Lalji, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Aminata Sow Fall, Wole Soyinka, and Yvonne Vera. The bulk of this issue, however, is given over to coverage of cultural and sociological topics from North Africa to the Cape, ranging from cultural identity in contemporary North Africa, two contributions on Kenyan naming ceremonies and initiation songs, and three studies of the function of Shona and Ndebele proverbs, to national history in Zimbabwean autobiography, traditional mourning dress of the Akans of Ghana, and the precolonial origins of traditional leadership in South Africa. Book excerpt: The central themes of Romans are “the Gospel” and “the righteousness of God.” The Book of Romans provides a clear and detailed explanation of how sinners, destined for hell due to their sins, can receive the remission of sins and become righteous. No one can be justified before God by merely keeping the Law. However, anyone can experience spiritual rebirth and obtain salvation through the remission of sins by placing their faith in “the righteousness of God,” which is abundantly revealed in the Gospel of truth. So, what kind of faith makes us born again as righteous? It is the faith of Abraham “who, contrary to hope, in hope believed” (Romans 4:18) in God's Promise. Attaining righteousness apart from sin is a divine work that we cannot achieve on our own, and Jesus Christ accomplished this grace unilaterally. Because God the Father, who loves us deeply, understands that we cannot free ourselves from sin and become righteous on our own, He unilaterally blotted out all our sins on our behalf. How did God remove our sins? God the Father sent His Only Begotten Son, Jesus, in the same human flesh as us. Jesus is God Himself, who came as the Lamb without blemish to atone for our sins. Jesus ordered John the Baptist to baptize Him, saying, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15). He received baptism from John in the form of laying on of hands, taking upon Himself the sins of the world at once. Thus, all the sins of the world were transferred to the flesh of Jesus. Therefore, on the day following Jesus' baptism, John the Baptist declared to his disciples, while pointing to Jesus passing by, saying, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) Jesus bore the sins of the world through the baptism He underwent and went to the cross. After being crucified and shedding all His blood on the cross, the Lord Jesus cried out loudly with His final breath, saying, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). He rose from the dead after three days. Jesus “came by water and blood” (1 John 5:6-8) to redeem and cleanse us from all our sins. The truth that Jesus atoned for all world’s sins through His baptism and the shedding of His blood on the cross is known as the Gospel of the water and the blood, the Original Gospel. Christians can truly comprehend the Book of Romans within the context of the Original Gospel. Sadly, in today's Christianity, the truth of Jesus' baptism has been lost. Those who rely solely on the partial gospel, centered only on the blood of the cross, can never fully grasp or live by the teachings of Romans. As you read through the two volumes of “Sermons on Romans,” my earnest desire is that you, the readers, will firmly stand upon the foundation of the Original Gospel, believe in the righteousness of God, and become righteous servants who proclaim it. Our Lord Jesus also strongly desires that you move “from faith to faith” (Romans 1:17).

Book excerpt: New York Times–bestselling author Eileen Goudge blends mystery and romance in a captivating new novel featuring intrepid property manager Tish Ballard, whose client’s beachfront home becomes a headline-making homicide scene With a Hollywood movie about to start filming in the California seaside town of Cypress Bay, Tish Ballard, owner of Rest Easy Property Management, welcomes her first celebrity tenant. Delilah Ward isn’t your typical beautiful, spoiled actress; she’s America’s sweetheart. Even Tish is charmed by the young star, which makes her gruesome discovery of Delilah’s bloodied corpse all the more gut-wrenching. When someone near and dear to Tish is named a person of interest, the fearless property manager defies the wishes of her former heartthrob, homicide detective Spence Breedlove, and launches her own investigation—with help from her best friend, Ivy, and her erstwhile sidekick, McGee. But no sooner than she starts rubbing elbows with the movie cast and crew—including Delilah’s eerily efficient personal assistant, the starlet’s sexy costar, and the film’s predatory director—is her own life threatened. With so much at stake, Tish has no choice but to do whatever it takes to lure a crafty killer out of hiding. Swimsuit Body is the 2nd novel in the Cypress Bay Mysteries, which began with Bones and Roses, but the books can be read and enjoyed in any order.
