Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations, And, the Opportunity of the Church Surely the Christian Church, in all its parts and members, should welcome the project of the League of Nations and organise itself into vigorous unanimity to press it to the front in the attention of all civilised peoples: both as a practical proposal made to us by our most experienced and most trusted statesmen and as a proposal profoundly congenial to the Christian Spirit. This is the thesis which I seek to maintain in this paper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations, the Principle and the Practice Humanity has just passed through the most terrible ordeal in its history, an ordeal that has caused many men to despair of the possibility of a peaceful organization of the world that Will be durable. There is general agree ment that a treaty of peace will be but a mere truce if it settles only the more immediate problems of the war, leaves untouched its underlying causes, and provides no remedies for the defects of the international organization which broke down in 1914. The first step, therefore, in the study of the problem of international reconstruction is a consideration of the way in which the World was organized politically at the outbreak Of the Great War. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations The purpose of this book is to give a practical exposition of the Covenant of the League of Nations, with so much introduction as appears proper for enabling the reader to understand the conditions under which the League was formed and had to commence its work. If here and there I have been tempted to wander from the strait way, the digressions are not long enough to call for any special apology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A League of Nations The war has called forth some good books on the future international organization Of the world, and others on the settlement Of the war itself TO my thinking, these two questions are a single problem which must be solved as a whole. The task which for us exceeds all others in importance, and must be made to include all others, is the making of conditions which promise security from further wars. The settlement of the national, colonial, and economic questions involved in this war, must be a settlement which will help the creation, and ensure the harmonious working Of a League of Nations founded to maintain peace. In this book I have tried to consider how far such a League Of Nations as President Wilson has proposed, can guarantee the security of Europe. Its success will depend, not merely on the wise drafting Of its constitution, but upon the solution reached in the war-settlement of our problem's of nationality, colonial expansion, international trade, sea-power, and alliances, I have groped in the following chapters for an answer to this question: Under what political and economic conditions would the creation of a League of Nations be a hopeful adventure? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations and Its Problems: Three Lectures P.s. - vvhile this Preface and volume were going through the Press, Austria - Hungary and Germany surrendered, and unprecedented revolutions broke out' which swept the Hapsburg, the Hohenzollern, and all the other German dynasties away. No one can foresee what will be the ultimate fate and condition of those two once mighty empires. It is obvious that, had the first and second lectures been delivered after these stirring events took place, some of the views to be found therein expressed would have been modified or differently expressed. I may ask the reader kindly to keep this in mind while reading the following pages. However, the general bearing of the argu ments, and the proposals for the organisation of the League of Nations and the establishment of an International Court of Justice and International Councils of Conciliation, are in no way influenced by these later events. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations: An Historical Argument; The Conditions of the Problem the League of Nations on Paper the Lesson of History We may account for it as we like. We may point out that the modern dogma of the sovereignty of the national State implies an anarchy among them which necessitates occasional if not frequent recourse to the barbarous arbitrament of war. We may explain that the proprietary notion of the State gave its proprietor an irresistible inducement to extend his property whenever he discerned the opportunity, or that economic necessity forces modern democracies into the dilemma of war or starvation. We may say that an increasing divergence of national character and aspirations imposes war upon nations as a struggle for the survival of the fittest, or that the survival of backward peoples with their cult of the duel relegates to a distant future the settlement of disputes involving their honour or vital interests by any other means than the sword and poison-gas. But unless we can show that the tendency of history, in spite of appearances and of: many of its professors, is to eliminate or diminish all these causes of conflict, we shall have no sure foundation for the projects of publicists or the treaties of statesmen and lawyers. The way to hell is not more lavishly paved with good intentions than the path of history is strewn with broken treaties and with scraps of paper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from League of Nations, Vol. 2: Its Principles Examined By every fireside where live the love of country and the love of justice is heard a sigh of relief that our flag is not, after all, to be trampled in the mire. Now that it has been raised aloft, follow it. Follow it even to the battle front. It goes on a high mission. The land over which it flies inherited its spirit of freedom from a race that had practiced liberty for a thousand years. And the daughter paid back the debt to the mother. Her successful practice of free institutions caused the civic stature of the citizen in the mother-land to grow. It lit the torch of liberty in France. Then, moving abreast, these three lands of democracy imparted to it impetus so resistless that freedom is sweeping victorious round the globe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the League of Nations: Told for Young People History to about Six hundred years before Christ, and tell you of a very interesting experiment, which was really like a little League of Nations, among some of the cities Of Ancient Greece. There was at that time in Greece a very rich and magnificent temple at Delphi. TO worship there, people came from many parts, and twelve cities agreed to join together to watch over the temple and its great wealth. Men from all the cities, small or large, met in council, and each city was allowed two votes. As they had a common Object in joining together, each began to feel that. The others in the Council were friends and brothers and to see that it would not do for them to fight amongst themselves so the members Of this amphictyonic league, as it was called, made promises to bring their quarrels for settlement to the League Council, and all the men from the cities who came to the Council took the following oath We will not destroy any Amphictyonic town; we will not cut Ofi' any Amphictyonic town from running water The Council settled a good many disputes, mostly to do with the Temple Of Delphi, but some Others as well. Thus, once when two cities had decided they must. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
