Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sugar-Cane Leaf-Hopper in Hawaii Up to the present time, the sugar plantations have been particularly free from serious attacks of insect pests and dis ease. Because 'of this the planters are little acquainted with the insect life to be found in their cane fields. The cane-borer (sphenophorus obscuras Boisd.) has been the most destructive and for that reason the one most generally known. It is safe to say that the borer and the hopper will not be the only pests with which the planters will have to contend in the fu ture. With the profits of the sugar industry decreasing it will be necessary to study more closely the various insect pests of the cane, and'there is demand on the part of the planters for practical, untechnical information regarding them. The pres ent paper is written with this fact in mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Station has been along the lines of insect. Control, the eradication of fungus diseases, exam imation of fertilizers, soil studies, cultural methods and the technical details of sugar manufacture. One of the most conspicuous practical results brought about by the Experiment Station is the successful control of a number of insect pests of sugar cane particularly the leaf-hopper, which, before the introduction of parasitics, did damage to the extent of millions of dollars; but was brought under practical control, by means of parasities, within two or three years. Attention has been given to the propagation of new varieties by means of hybridization and-the growing of seedling canes, and some promising results have geen' obtained along that line. There are acres planted in sugar cane, partly on land owned by sugar planters, and partly on leased land. About acres of this land have been re claimed by irrigation, 'at a cost of about About tons' of fertilizers, in addition to stable manure are used annually in the production of cane. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mosaic Disease of Sugar Cane and Other Grasses Cane fields are distributed over practically the whole State of Florida, but the crop is grown largely for sirup for home use and the cane patches are. Even smaller than those in Georgia. Mosaic has been widely scattered over the State by the distribution of cut tings from experimental plats grown for the purpose of testing varieties. There are only two points, however, where the disease has spread so as to include any considerable area, namely, the vicini ties of Marianna and Bristol. Other points in Florida where mosaic has been found include Apalachicola, Tallahassee, Punta Gorda, Palmetto, De Land, Winterhaven, Chattahoochee, Muscogee, and Canal Point. These are all purely local, infections, and in some cases the disease has not yet spread more than a few rods from the original plantings shipped in from other States. An eradication campaign would be entirely practicable in Florida. Mosaic has been discovered at only one point, Biloxi, in Mississippi. From the farm on which it first appeared it spread to one other farm. In the vicinity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
