Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's American History In the latter part of the fifteenth century Venice had gained control of the lucrative trade between Europe and the Indies. That trade, however, was seriously hampered by the fact that it could not follow a direct and continuous water route. The Isthmus of Suez barred the way. For this reason, the spices, silks, and drugs brought from the far East up the Red Sea had to be unloaded, transported across the desert to the Nile,4 the student's american history. [1487. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “American History Revised is as informative as it is entertaining and humorous. Filled with irony, surprises, and long-hidden secrets, the book does more than revise American history, it reinvents it.”—James Bamford, bestselling author of The Puzzle Palace, Body of Secrets, and The Shadow Factory This spirited reexamination of American history delves into our past to expose hundreds of startling facts that never made it into the textbooks, and highlights how little-known peopleand events played surprisingly influential roles in the great American story. We tend to think of history as settled, set in stone, but American History Revised reveals a past that is filled with ironies, surprises, and misconceptions. Living abroad for twelve years gave author Seymour Morris Jr. the opportunity to view his country as an outsider and compelled him to examine American history from a fresh perspective. As Morris colorfully illustrates through the 200 historical vignettes that make up this book, much of our nation’s past is quite different—and far more remarkable—than we thought. We discover that: • In the 1950s Ford was approached by two Japanese companies begging for a joint venture. Ford declined their offers, calling them makers of “tin cars.” The two companies were Toyota and Nissan. • Eleanor Roosevelt and most women’s groups opposed the Equal Rights Amendment forbidding gender discrimination. • The two generals who ended the Civil War weren’t Grant and Lee. • The #1 bestselling American book of all time was written in one day. • The Dutch made a bad investment buying Manhattan for $24. • Two young girls aimed someday to become First Lady—and succeeded. • Three times, a private financier saved the United States from bankruptcy. Organized into ten thematic chapters, American History Revised plumbs American history’s numerous inconsistencies, twists, and turns to make it come alive again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plain Story of American History My purpose in writing this book is expressed in the title. I wish that it may be a plain story of the achievement of human beings in that part of the Western Hemisphere which is now the United States of America. To relate the main facts clearly and broadly, rather than to describe many detailed occurrences, has been constantly in my mind. The story here presented may be taken as an introduction for a wider study of our history. It has been my aim to use simple but strong language, and to place the emphasis of the book on human actions. But much attention has been given to social history, and in two chapters the outlines of American government have been presented. I hope the book will prove neither hard nor easy for pupils. If it is received as a straightforward story, drawing forth the earnest efforts of capable pupils and making for the success of faithful teachers, it will be a source of pleasure for the author, repaying him for many days and nights of careful study of our national history. More especially, I wish that the book may serve, along with many other excellent works of similar scope, to give to the American youth a better appreciation of the glorious history of their native land, and to create in them a warmer purpose to serve their country and promote its progress. With the hope of making the task of the teacher lighter, the chapters have been made short and an abundance of marginal headings has been introduced. On the basis of these headings complete outlines can be made by the pupils, which, when studied under the chapter headings, will give the pupil good topical grasp of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Later American History This book, like Stories of Early American History, follows somewhat closely the course of study prepared by the Committee of Eight, the present volume covering the topics outlined for Grade V, while the earlier one includes the material suggested for Grade IV. It was the plan of that committee to take up in these grades, largely in a biographical way, a great part Of the essential facts Of American history; and with this plan the author, who was a member of that committee, was in hearty accord. This method, it is believed, serves a double purpose. In the first place, it is the best possible way Of laying the foundation for the later and more detailed study Of United States history in the higher grammar grades by those pupils who are to continue in school; and in the second, it gives to that large number Of pupils who will leave school before the end of the Sixth grade - which is at least half Of all the boys and girls in the schools of the country - some acquaintance with the leading men and prominent events of American history. It is without doubt a great mistake to allow half of the pupils to go out from our public schools with almost no knowledge of the moral and material forces which have made this nation what it is to-day. It is an injustice to the young people themselves; it is also an injury to their country, the vigor of whose life will depend much upon their intelligent and patriotic support. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Nation, Vol. 1 As will be seen this work extends beyond the mere history of the United States. It dates back to the earliest days of America, not merely for the purpose of reiter ating the well-known facts of discovery and settlement, but to establish the necessary chronological chain of events, and bring out the historical connection between the past and the present. Aside from an interesting chapter on American Prehistoric Races, these early events in the history of our country are treated as briefly as is con sistent with the general purpose of the work, and a careful reading of them will aid to a better and more intelligent understanding of conditions leading up to the present situation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concise History of the American People, From the Discoveries of the Continent to the Present Time, Vol. 1 In these latter days public documents are published to the world, and the materials of history become accessible to all. By this means the main and leading facts of the late War are as well known to-day as they ever will be, with the exception of a few instances in the career of individuals which will be revealed when the Life and Times of each comes to be written. This latter class of material, however unfortunately often largely embellished and explained by after-thoughts, may throw light upon personal motives and actions, but will shed little upon the great events themselves. For in the late exciting period statesmen groped their way; no man saw the end from the beginning. An overruling Hand brought about the great result, not by the plannings of men, but in spite of them. It is hoped that the intelligent reader will find in this volume a succinct as well as a comprehensive view of the history of the American people, and of the influences that have formed their characteristics and their Government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glance at Current American History On the general merits, or rather demerits, of the south it is quite evident that the outside world has made up its mind. The accepted fable or distillation of rumors which we call History, has fully crystallized, and there is not the least ground for supposing that there Will be any revision of the judgment already pronounced. For two-and-thirty years our Northern friends have deprecated any allusion on our part to the causes or character of the war, assuring us that every impulse of manhood and every throb of patriotism demanded that we should bury the past, with all its illusive hopes and unavailing griefs, and bend our undivided energies to the upbuilding of a common country. And that is precisely the thing which we have been doing. Meantime, during those same two-and-thirty years, those Northern friends of ours have been diligent in a systematic distortion of the leading facts of American history inventing, suppressing, perverting, without scruple or shame - until our Southland stands to-day pilloried to the scorn of all the world and bearing on her front the brand of every infamy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Truth and Facts: Facts Which Every American Should Know My main object in publishing this book is to warn the American people against the dangers menacing this country, and jeopardizing the existence of the United States of America as a free and independent country. My criticisms may sometimes appear severe, but I trust they will be accepted in the spirit in which they are offered. Few people have courage enough to come out in the open and tell the truth, as their positions in life do not permit them to do so. History shows that many men who came forward with the truth had to suffer martyrdom. I am ready to state my convictions frankly in the interest of the great cause, and to tell what others either would not say, or are debarred from saying. May this book pass from one American to another and thus contribute to strengthen the ideals of this country. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory History of the United States IT is the aim of this work to set forth the main facts of American History, particularly the earlier periods, in such a way as to attract and interest pupils of the earlier gram mar grades. It is now very generally acknowledged that history is best approached through biography. Personal incident is more attractive to every one, and especially to children, than any narrative of events can possibly be. Most of the book, therefore, has been given to biographical sketches of representative makers of the nation. Effort has been made to choose those men who would best illustrate the most important phases of national growth. Some of these phases are: the difficulties and dangers of exploration, and how they were overcome by earnestness and perseverance; the risks and hardships of settlement, and how they were met and conquered; the independence and patriotism of the colonists, and how they triumphed; the effect of environment upon character; the develop ment of the people in politics and government and in social life; and the progress of invention and its effect upon national development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The aim of the authors in writing this book has been to present what seemed to them the main historical developments in American history, the knowledge of which will enable the pupil to understand 'he social, political, and economic institutions which he finds about him in this land wherein he lives. In doing this we have tried to use simple language, to show clearly the relation of one fact to another, and to keep the story constantly moving forward. We have sought to interest not by the selection of the merely entertaining facts which are often the things of least value, but by choice of the facts that have meant something in our growth as a nation. This is first of all a text-book and not a story-book. We make no apology for the omission of many of the yarns of American his tory. If history is worth teaching at all, it is worth teaching as causal, vital, meaning history. We heartily approve of reading his tory for mere pleasure. History is, we believe, in many of its high est literary forms, most delightful and valuable mere reading, but for serious study there are certain essentials which should not be disguised or palliated by facts which are only entertaining, and not essentially significant.
