Book excerpt: King David wrote "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil". The concept or principle of valley and mountain-top experiences in the life journey of a believer is one that often generates theological and doctrinal debate within the body of Christ. In this book Femi examines the lives of four bible individuals (King David and Prime Minister Joseph of Egypt, versus King Saul and King Solomon); two with known valley experiences before they got to their purpose and two without recorded valley experiences before they got to their purpose on earth, the conclusion and how valley experiences (or lack of) affected each person's assignment is very revealing. This book carefully mixed the author's (and others) personal experiences along with biblical examples to highlight "valley and mountain-top" principle. The book answers the following questions as well, what a valley is, why valleys are necessary in the life of a believer, the plan of the enemy for a Christian in the valley and what Christians are supposed to do in their valley? William Femi Awodele is the executive director of Christian Couples Fellowship International, Inc. He is the author of seven other books (most on relationship), including two novels, "Agapao" and "Power of Forgiveness". Femi is married to his Olatokunbo Abike (a family physician), and they are blessed with three children, Ibukunoluwa, Fiyinfoluwa and Ebunoluwa.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the extent to which various scholarly labels are appropriate for the work of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. As Louis Menand wrote, “Holmes has been called a formalist, a positivist, a utilitarian, a realist, a historicist, a pragmatist, (not to mention a nihilist).” Each of the eight chapters investigates one label, analyzes the secondary texts that support the use of the term to characterize Holmes’s philosophy, and takes a stand on whether or not the category is appropriate for Holmes by assessing his judicial and nonjudicial publications, including his books, articles, and posthumously published correspondences. The thrust of the collection as a whole, nevertheless, bends toward the stance that Holmes is a pragmatist in his jurisprudence, ethics, and politics. The final chapter, by Susan Haack, makes that case explicitly. Edited by Seth Vannatta, this book will be of particular interest to students and faculty working in law, jurisprudence, philosophy, intellectual history, American Studies, political science, and constitutional theory.

Book excerpt: Discover the power of the Catechism like never before with Screwtape! If you enjoyed C.S. Lewis Screwtape Letters, but need a guide book of defense strategies based in solid Church teaching, this is it! De La Torre breaks down Lewis' perennial classic chapter-by-chapter, identifying the devil's specific temptation in each. Then, he provides you with solid references and explanations from the Catechism of the Catholic Church which highlight the opposite virtue, truth or good. Despite his best (or worst!) intentions, the devil cannot help throwing into glorious relief all the beauty and richness of the Faith. His temptations are the shadows which highlight the Truth all the more. De La Torre gives you exactly the right Catechism teachings to use as effective weapons against Screwtape's whispered lies. Individuals, catechists, teachers and parents will delight in the clear presentation of truths which are sure to squash the temptation to do evil whenever and wherever found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clives Staples Lewis (1898-1963) called his theological writings as that "of a layman and an amateur" who merely attempted to restate "ancient and orthodox doctrines." However, S. Steve Park argues that Lewis's theological reflections are well-informed, thoughtful and weighty. For instance, Lewis's notion of "mere Christianity" consistently shows his commitment to "supernaturalism" (vs. naturalism) and "eucatastrophic salvationism" (vs. ethical developmentalism) in sharp contrast to many prevailing theologians of his time. In this book, the author expounded Lewis's theological writings rather comprehensively and organized the results according to Lewis's signature literary motif of the journey towards home, in four stages: "Away from Home," "Homeward Turning," "Home Away from Home," and "The Final Home." Under these headings, Lewis's major theological and literary themes find illuminating treatments with rich contents and penetrating analyses. In so doing, the author presents to the readers, probably for the first time, a systematic theology of C. S. Lewis. It turns out that Lewis, more than just a storyteller, was a significant participant in the world of theological reflections, demonstrating himself to be a rather formidable theological mind to be reckoned with.

Book excerpt: A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a senior tempter in the service of 'Our Father Below.' At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation--and triumph over it--ever written.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sophocles' play, first staged in the fifth century B.C., stands as a timely exploration of the conflict between those who affirm the individual's human rights and those who must protect the state's security. During the War of the Seven Against Thebes, Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, learns that her brothers have killed each other, having been forced onto opposing sides of the battle. When Creon, king of Thebes, grants burial of one but not the "treacherous" other, Antigone defies his order, believing it her duty to bury all of her close kin. Enraged, Creon condemns her to death, and his soldiers wall her up in a tomb. While Creon eventually agrees to Antigone's release, it is too late: She takes her own life, initiating a tragic repetition of events in her family's history. In this outstanding new translation, commissioned by Ireland's renowned Abbey Theatre to commemorate its centenary, Seamus Heaney exposes the darkness and the humanity in Sophocles' masterpiece, and inks it with his own modern and masterly touch.
