Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: September 28, 1935 I have no thought here of discussing, in detail, all of the ways in which I think the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as taught by the Latter-day Saints, when translated into life makes its votaries better. I would not have time for such a task. But there have come to me, in the contemplation of this address, some thoughts with respect to this subject which I would like to express. It has seemed to me that at least two principles might be examined and be profitable for consideration for a few moments. One of the fundamental teachings of the Church is the one with respect to home. We have been from the beginning a home building and a home-loving people. Notwithstanding all that some of our critics have said, we are happy and proud to be judged by the fruits of the homes of members of the Mormon Church. We believe that the home is the basic unit of our social life, and when properly commenced here, will endure throughout eternity; and that the sacred relationship of husband and wife, parent and child, continues to the faithful so long as life exists, and that is through all eternity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 82: December 30, 1920 MY decision to apply for membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was, curiously enough, brought about by a mob. I had been converted some time, but it was a con version of the head and not of the heart. Friends wondered why I did not want to join the Church if I believed its teachings. I could not explain, for I did not know myself. I only knew that I was not ready. I attended the Open-air meetings conducted by the missionaries whenever possible, but took no part in them. I was content to assume the role of a disinterested listener. Some times I told myself I was inconsistent, that I was not honest, but I argued that it would not be right for me to identify myself with the Church until I was really converted. Had I before meet ing the missionaries been what is known as religiously inclined it would have been different, I suppose. But I was not an ad herent of any church. I considered ministers blind guides and many of their leading church members hypocrites. I wrote articles attacking them and defending the Mormons. The teachings of Mormonism seemed so reasonable and scriptural; but I was interested in them only from an intellectual stand point. As I have already said, my conversion was of the head and not of the heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: March 16, 1922 Under these headings, the Plymouth Western Evening Herald of February 2ud, ult., publishes a communication from Elder Harvey D. Hansen, one of the two missionaries recently mobbed while holding an Open-air meeting in that historic town. The Plymouth paper, by way of introduction, says: Since it is the policy of the Herald to give both Sides, we have consented to publish a denial of Miss Agnes Lister's story of her experience among the Mormons, ' written by Mr. H. D. Hansen, a missionary now in Plymouth. And then follows Elder Hansen's denial: It is by no means improbable that the name Agnes C. Lister is as fictitious as the story. I was born and raised in Utah, have traveled extensively throughout the Western States, and I testify that the accusations against the Mormon Church are vicious, inconsistent, and maliciously false. The root of prejudice against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arises from the claim we set forth in the official name. The Church has been opposed from its infancy, not only because of plural marriage. The greatest persecution was endured before polygamy was practiced. The Prophet Joseph Smith was murdered in cold blood by a mob led by a Protestant minister because he bore a testimony similar to the Apostle Paul that he seen God. Because of upholding this testimony, sealed with his blood, we are slandered, misrepresented, and persecuted in some sections of the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: June 4, 1903 Mormon characters to Professor Charles Anthon, of New York, by Martin Harris. But it is well to remember that complete details of this transaction, and the statement of each side of the case, are given in Orson Pratt's Works (salt Lake edition), pages 295-7. A Similar account in briefer form is given in The History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, vol. I, chap. 3, and in the Life of Joseph Smith, Cannon, chap. 8. The thirty-seventh chapter of Ezekiel deals almost entirely with the great Latter-day work and might be made the subject of volumes of oommen taries. A few of the verses (16-19) distinctly foreshadow the writing and bringing forth of the Book of Mormon. These have been so fully discussed by almost every preacher and writer of our Church that the merest reference to them seems superfluous, and nothing can be added to what has already been said: Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions: and join them one to another into one Stick; and they shall become one in thine hand. And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these? Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder. - Matt. 19 6. A man cannot grow to the full measure of a man without a woman; and conversely, a woman cannot grow to the full measure of a woman without a man. They were created together and God intended them to be together in wedlock. If men and women are to enter into a fulness of joy, it must needs be that the family relationship should continue throughout eternity. That it will so continue in the Church and kingdom of God is the firm belief of the Latter-day Saints. To be born into the world in the first place, and then to be born again - born into the kingdom of God - and finally to enter into the eternity of the marriage covenant - these three conditions explain with clearness the very purpose of life. Surely, brethren and sisters, life is worth living. I testify to you most earnestly that I do know that the work in which we are engaged is the work of God, and that this is the Church of Jesus Christ; It is so denominated. It is called the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to distinguish it from His Church in the meridian of time. I know that Christ was and is the Saviour of the world, that Joseph Smith was a prophet Of God, and the instrument in the hands of God in founding this work by organizing the Church as He did in 1830. I rejoice in this knowledge. To me it is a glorious testimony, and I am determined, if possible, to hold on to it all the days of my life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 82: May 13, 1920 Warms in the sun, refreshes in the breeze, Glows in the stars and blossoms in the trees. That, said Elder Whitney, is an admirable description of the spirit that emanates from God and pervades all creation; but it is not God himself, in whose image man was created. To worship a gift or an emanation from God is a form of idolatry. When, a hundred years ago, the Father and the Son appeared to the boy Joseph Smith - two beings in the form of man - from that hour there was one person, at least, upon this planet who knew what kind of a being God is. It was no chance happening, that took Joseph Smith into the woods to pray, on that glorious spring morning. It was the design of Deity, a predestined event. The hour had struck, and the man was there whom God had provided. Other boys might pray, and their prayers would be answered; but not in this way. All men are not called to be prophets. He was the one ordained for the purpose, the man divinely chosen to usher in the great work of the dispensation of the fulness of times. This is the Saturday night of the world's history, and morning will break upon the Millennium, the thousand years of peace, the Sabbath of the World. That is why all things are in commotion. War, famine, pestilence, earthquake, tempest and tidal wave these are among the predicted signs of the Savior's second coming. Earth must be freed from oppression and cleansed from iniquity. It is God's house, and He is coming to live in it. Bishop Charles W. Nibley was the concluding speaker. Cit-ing some of the fruits of Mormonism during the one hundred years since the Lord revealed himself, he said the world must admit the works of Mormonism are good. Was it not a good work to preach the gospel to the poor and oppressed of the earth, and bring them together in a thrifty working community, where their souls might have peace? Was it not a good work to build a community by co operative efiort? If these are good works, then the tree has put forth good fruit. Is it not a good work for the Mormon Church to support its own school system, in addition to paying taxes as citizens of the state for the support of the public school system? The gospel is a higher and better law than the law of the land. It does not controvert it, it supplements it. The Mormon people challenge the world for loyalty to their country. They teach good citizenship. And the spiritual truths taught by the Mormons: Faith, repentance, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. Are they not good teachings? The spirit of sacrifice, of service, of work, of courage, are instilled into the hearts of the Latter-day Saints by the power of the Holy Ghost. Thus all the fruits of Mormonism are evidence that its message is true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: April 8, 1909 It is the same with the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Latter-day Saints. It is the gospel of the Son of God, revealed anew in this last dispensation, that has made the name of that man immortal, and the saints the people that they are. Without it, in all proba bility the name of Joseph Smith would not have been known out side the locality in which he resided. Scarcely a day passes with out adding lustre to the name of the latter-day prophet, and as the years go by it will become more and more illustrious. It was the same with President Brigham Young. It was Mormonism, or the gospel of Jesus Christ, which made him the great and mighty man that he was. The-same may be said of all the succeeding presidents of the Church and also of the Latter-day Saints as a whole. In their lives the power of the gospel has been plainly made manifest. What a change the gospel of Christ has Wrought in the lives of tens of thousands of men and women in these latter days; through obedience to its holy principles they have been literally regenerated, born again, made new creatures in Christ Jesus, so that they are able to say with Paul, we are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation. How could we feel ashamed of that which has done so much for us? Well might the Savior say, He that is ashamed of me before men of him will I be ashamed before my Father and before the angels. What have we to be ashamed of, brethren and sisters? Nothing under the sun. On the contrary, we have much to -be proud of. IS the great revelation which the Father and the Son have given of themselves in this dispensation something, to be ashamed of? Verily, no. Think of the state of ignorance from which that glorious manifestation has delivered hundreds of thousands of the human family. What erroneous and absurd ideas we entertained concerning our Father in heaven before the glad tidings of that new revelation reached us. Before, we worshiped we knew not what; now we worship God intelligently, in Spirit and in truth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 9, 1922 President Grant said it was a source of great satisfaction to him to see such a large attendance. He said he had no recollection of any opening of conference on a week day when some of those attending had to stand. He was grateful to see so many present, hoped all would be fed on the bread of life, and that whatever he said would be for the good of himself and the congregation. When the Opening prayer was made, he said, and a supplication went up to God that law and order might be upheld, he knew what the keynote should be. President Grant then read a selection from the Doctrine and Covenants to the effect that laws and rulers should be upheld and order maintained. That, he said, meant that men should be able to labor without running the risk of being killed by someone who objects to their doing such work. The President said he was convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is the duty of every Latter-day Saint to obey the law, to uphold the law and sustain the law. It is the duty of every man and woman in the Church to uphold the laws. This includes the prohibition law and the cigarette law. President Grant said that only those men who will agree to support the cigarette law and keep it on the statute books should be supported by the Latter-day Saints. The founder of this Church met the Father and the Son face to face, and his followers have been proclaiming that fact to the world since, said the President. He then read an account of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum; how the Prophet declared he was going like a lamb to the slaughter. The speaker said his mother had told him that a more God-fearing man than Hyrum Smith never lived. He declared he believes that Joseph and Hyrum are working on the other side for the advancement of the plan of salvation as they worked here, and that they have attained the highest degree of exaltation. Men can conspire and can work against the Church of God as established upon the earth, the speaker said, but no one can find a man since Jesus Christ who has done more for the salvation of mankind than Joseph Smith. Hundreds of thousands of persons, he said, have a testimony of the truth of this fact, and all the lies in the world cannot stop this work.
