Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: July 1, 1915 DO the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints realize the importance of the mission and work of the Pro phet Joseph Smith? Do we stop to consider what the conditions would be to-day if such a man had not been upon the earth in these the latter days? Most people who consider the teachings of the Latter-day Saints are compelled, by yielding to reason, to acknowledge the greatness of the work and the truths that are contained therein; but few stop to consider the importance of the truths that were revealed to man through the Prophet Joseph. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: April 29, 1915 Another great and important duty devolving upon this people is to teach their children from their very cradle until the day they become men and women every principle of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and endeavor as far as it lies in the power of the parents to instil into the hearts of their children a love for God and a love for the truth, a love for virtue, a love for honesty and for honor and integrity to everything that is good and right. That is an important thing for every man and woman who stands at the head of a family in the household of faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: December 30, 1915 Such is the Word of the Lord, in all ages, regarding the king dom of God which will be established at the second coming of the Son of Man. It tells us that it will be a kingdom in which peace, founded upon righteousness, will prevail. There will be peace and joy in the hearts of men, instead of stormy passions, doubt, anxiety, and despair; there will be peace between neighbors, and in all industrial fields, instead of rivalry, envy, strikes and lock outs; there will be peace in the government, because party strife will be a thing of the past; there will be international peace, instead of war and bloodshed, because perfect justice will be the basis of all international relations. Many people refuse to believe the word of God on this subject. Wars, they say, have always been and always will be. They say they believe God will save His children and transfer them to the realms of the glorified, where there shall be no more strife, and no suffering of any kind, but they refuse to believe that God can save and redeem His children on this earth. They pray for the coming of the kingdom in which His will shall be done on earth as it is in heaven, but they do not believe that the prayer can be realized on earth. And yet, what God has spoken has never failed. His promises, as far as they have become due, have been kept to the very letter, and those that are still reserved for the future will be kept with equal faithfulness. We have, as Peter says, the word of prophecy more sure even than the word of history which has been transmitted to us by the eye-witnesses of the power and majesty of our Lord while in the flesh (ii. Peter 1: 15 The kingdom of righteousness and peace will be established in the fulness of time, according to the pro phetic word, and the immediate preparations for it have been going on for some time. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been raised up in the valleys of the mountains. As we read in Isaiah, Zion that bringeth good tidings, or, rather, he that bringeth good tidings to Zion, has appeared in the high mountains; he that bringeth good tidings to Jerusalem has lifted up his voice with strength and proclaimed the coming of the Lord (isa. 40: the mighty angel with the little book Open has appeared and solemnly declared that there shall be time, or delay, no longer, but that the hour has come for the completion of God's plan of redemption (rev. 10: 1 And, in accordance with these declara tions the political structures of the world are to-day shaking and trembling, for the ground is to be cleared for the coming of the Lord of lords, the King of kings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: June 17, 1915 The above citations have been selected at random in order to show some of the distinctive features of the language of prophecy. And now to point to the object and the purpose of the foregoing: Since the closing of the canon of Scripture, from the days of Chris t, Peter, Paul, and John, the revelator, and until the first quarter of the nineteenth century of the Christian era, there had not arisen a man whose speech bore the stamp of divinity and of prophetic language. Not in all the Christian annals, notwithstanding the multiplicity of books that have been written; nor in the inhumer able sermons that have been preached during that period, can there be found one prophet declaring a message unto mankind in the language of, thus saith the lord; Hear ye the word of the Lord your God which I am sent to speak unto you; Hearken unto the voice of the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, and give ear to my words. For many hundred years there has been no prophet, no word of prophecy, no revelation concerning the will of the Lord; no light piercing the darkness of ages, no vision to save the people from perishing, no voice of God breaking the terrible silence. Of a truth there has, been a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the word of the Lord, from the mouth of a divinely inspired prophet. Little wonder that mens' hearts fail them, and that the world is cast down in despair. But lift up your heads, 0 ye nations, and rejoice and despair not! Listen, all ye ends of the earth; come, all ye children of our Father; cease your running to and fro in the earth, for the famine is ended. Come, therefore, and eat of that spiritual food, and drink of the waters of life freely. For the seal of heaven has been broken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: December 2, 1915 Finally, the time came when the father called them all back to him and rewarded his children according to their diligence and faithfulness in keeping the various commandments he had given them. He separated the faithful from the unfaithful, but allowed them to visit their unfaithful brothers and sisters, that they might advise them concerning the best methods of improving their condition. Thus is stated, briefly, in story form, the work and glory of God, which is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man (pearl of Great Price 1: God is the Father of the spirits of all men, just as our earthly parents are the fathers and mothers of our earthly, or temporal, bodies (heb. 12: Before we came to this earth we all existed with God, the Father, being His offspring (acts 17: He is the Father of all our spiritual bodies, and naturally our spiritual bodies had the fundamental organs that our earthly bodies now have, such as eyes, ears, arms, etc., but were composed of a finer and purer substance than our ordinary earthly senses can discern (doc. And Gov. 131: 7 That spiritual body is now, while we are upon this earth, clothed with an earthly body. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: March 11, 1915 According to the Scriptures baptism washes away sins (acts 22 it is the ordinance of regeneration (john 3: 5; Titus 3: by it the believer enters into the union of the redeemed, of which Christ is the head, and becomes, in a special sense, the son, or daughter of God (gal. 3: 26, in baptism we are buried with Christ through repentance, being dead to sin, and have risen with Him to a newness of life (rom. 6: 1-4, compare Doe. And Gov. 5: 16; 33: 11; 68: 9; 84: 64; 128: According to the Book of Mormon those who have been baptized have taken upon them the name of Christ (ii. Nephi 31: they have been baptized unto the Lord their God (alma 62: they are promised the Holy Ghost (ii. Nephi 31: and they shall inherit the kingdom of God (iii. Nephi 11: Baptism is the door of the Church of Christ; we cannot get in there in any other way, for Christ hath said it (joseph F. Smith, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 19, page That expresses in one sentence all the effects produced by baptism when performed by the authority of our Lord, and in the manner He has ordained. If We consider the teachings of the Scriptures with regard to the true meaning of baptism, we can, to some extent, comprehend why it is a condition of salvation and a means of regeneration. Baptism is a confession of Christ. By that ordinance the believer confesses before God, men, and angels that he has enlisted in the Lord's army and is willing to follow Him. The Lord says: Who soever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven (matt. 10: When we ask 'for baptism we confess that we believe in Jesus Christ as our Mediator, our King, and the Captain of our salvation, and we have this assurance: If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thy heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved (romans 10: 9; compare Doe. And Gov. 76: To be baptized is, therefore, as most churches teach, a sacred duty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: May 13, 1915 Sisters Janie and Lizzie Blackledge rendered the duet, Some time, somewhere. President A. Hulme Nebeker expressed his appreciation of the testimonies borne and the beautiful spirit present. He compared the gospel of Jesus Christ to a doctor's prescription, in that we must follow its directions if we expect to obtain results. Our works would profit us nothing, were it not for the grace of God extended to all who open their hearts to receive it, and the aton ing sacrifice made by Christ on Calvary. A complete testimony of the gospel comes by obeying the gospel; we must live worthy of the knowledge we have, and our knowledge will gradually ih crease. I t is the task of a lifetime to thoroughly understand God's love and work, just as it is the work of a lifetime to understand what is meant by that word mother. We learn to love God by obeying His counsels and walking with His Spirit. III this life God saw fit to allow most of us to walk by faith, but as we pressed boldly 011 this path of faith it became that straight and narrow path of knowledge that leads to life eternal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: March 4, 1915 In the Doctrine and Covenants (sec. 20: 37) the following com mandment is given: All those who humble themselves before God, and desire to be baptized and come forth with broken hearts and contrite spirits, and witness before the Church that they have truly repented of all their sins, and are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ, having a determination to serve Him to the end, and truly manifest by their works that they have received of the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins, shall be received by baptism into His Church. It is clear from these passages of the Word of 'god that only those who believe and repent, and who come in all humility to receive instruction as disciples, are to be baptized; for baptism is an intelligent, voluntary act, whereby the applicant professes faith in Christ and His teachings, and pledges himself, or herself, to keep His commandments, as a loyal subject. There is no real controversy on this point. All agree that faith is a condition of baptism. But, as is well known, many religious organizations admit infants to the baptismal font, although in their case there is not, and cannot be, either repentance or faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: April 15, 1915 In the Seventh Ward Meeting House, Latter-day Saints, Ogden, Utah, there is a picture, painted on the sloping ceiling over the stand. Under the picture is simply written Rev. 14: 6, 7. Here is the picture - 'a stretch of stony land, very desolate, separated from the richer mainland by a river. On the mainland stands a beautiful building which looks like a castle. The smaller portion of land gives one the impression of being an island. Sheep are seen grazing upon it, and on a stone is seated a shepherd boy, crook in hand, with eyes intently fixed on the ground. He appears to be gazing at nothing and thinking of the same, and it is easy to see his thoughts seldom or never soar higher than the sheep he is tending. But there is another figure, that of an old man with white hair. He also carries a shepherd's crook, but his thoughts are nowhere near the sheep. His head is raised, and his right hand shades his eyes, as he gazes far away into the heavens. Is there anything to be seen there? Yes, there, flying through the heavens is an angel bearing a scroll. Every fibre of the old man's being, you can see, is thrilling with the scene before him. He is lost to earth, lost to all around him, as he eagerly drinks in the vision of the days that are to come. The boy has no thought of angels in his head. So intent is he on earthly things, so absorbed with the things that must pass away like the tale that is told, that he is blind and deaf to all that is passing around him, and reminds you of the words of Christ, They have eyes which see not, they have ears which hear not. What has he to do with angels' visits? All he has to think about are the poor, dumb sheep. Let who will converse with angels. But the old man has learnt how transient, how little worth are the things of this world, and all his thoughts are centered up above; and later, sitting quietly down and reviewing the vision that had opened to him, he drew his writing materials to him and wrote: And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, so you see these people who believe in angels' visits are not so de luded after all, for John left them word that one of the things they could confidently expect in the latter days was, that one angel, at least, would visit them and bear with him the gospel of Jesus Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: October 14, 1915 But this is not the question at issue between the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other churches. We main tain that the scriptures predict a general and complete apostasy from the Church of Christ, and that this apostasy actually took place. We claim that the reign of antichrist was established instead of the sovereignty of our Lord, and that this revolution was as radical as if the people of Great Britain should discard their wonderful democratic form of government and establish auto cracy in its stead. We, further, believe that God again has intro duced His Spiritual government among the children of men, by establishing the Church through the instrumentality of the Prophet Joseph Smith. We hold that all the churches of the world have deviated from the teachings of our Lord, introduced ordinances different from those instituted by Him, and changed the form of government He established. The Roman church, particularly in the matter of church government, patterned after pagan Rome, and her daughters have followed her very closely. The question, then, is not, whether all churches have emanated from Rome, but whether the Church of Christ has remained on earth, in any of the existing sects, from the day of its foundation until now; or, whether it was necessary to establish it again by means of direct revelation, as at first. The latter proposition, we hold, is true, and can be proved from the Scriptures and from history. With regard to the second point, history is so clear that there should be no excuse for doubt as to which church seceded from the other. To say that Rome seceded from the Anglican church is a mere juggling with words, as if one should say that, by the American War of Independence in 1776, England seceded from the American colonies involved in that conflict. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: November 18, 1915 The Jews, still in unbelief that Jesus was the Christ, will separate themselves from among the Gentiles and gather to their fatherland. Events will be so controlled by the God of Israel, that they shall possess the land again and build the Temple in its former place; they will increase and multiply in numbers and in riches, and practice the rites of the Mosaic law, looking for the coming of the Messiah to reign over them as king, The bankrupt nations, envying the wealth of the sons of Judah, will seek a pre text to make war upon them, and will invade the 'holy land' to take a prey and a spoil.' Are they not in dire distress in Christendom? They have not these officers, and, in consequence, there exists no unity of the faith. They are dividing into disunity more and more every day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: November 25, 1915 The Godhead, then, consists of three personages, God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; God the Father and the Son possess ing material bodies, and the Holy Ghost, a body of spirit. Following the writer further, we find that he speaks of Genesis 1: 26, where God says, Let us make man in our own image, and he adds, of course, this likeness must be in some sphere of being which God possesses; it would be entirely irrational to seek it in such things as the color of our hair, for instance, or in bodily resemblance of any kind, for God is spirit, as Christ Himself told us, and hence the likeness must be in our spiritual nature. The Mormons, however, take it that God meant just what He said. He made man in His own likeness and gave us a body and a spirit, such as He Himself possesses, as is amply proved by the Bible. As to the teaching of a plurality of Gods, of which the writer accuses us, we answer that we teach nothing but what the Scriptures teach, so that the charge is directed against the Bible not against us. We also believe that as man is, God once was, and as God is, so man may become. Blasphemy! May be; but if so, then are sectarian ministers blasphemers also. In any sectarian church this is the doctrine you will hear - Christ was once a help less babe born into the world, just the same as other children are born. He grew up, passed from childhood to manhood. He died, and rose again, and is now sitting at the right hand of God, sharing His glory. In other words, He is now as God, but once He was a man. He said Himself, I am the way, and bade us follow where He led. If we do that, then one day we shall be as Christ is now, as God. But, as God is progressing, too, He will always be as much ahead of us as He is now. He will still be God of gods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: July 8, 1915 With all these talents to its credit, charity can, I think, be classed above all things which we should seek for, with the possible exception of love. But love and charity are so inseparably united that they are almost one and the same thing. It is an impossibility to have charity without love, or love without charity. Where one is the other is always to be found, and if we have charity from which the love has evaporated, it is not charity; but mock charity. Above all things, says Peter, have fervent charity among yourselves, and Paul's testimony - above all things put on charity - is just as strong. The reason for these statements is, that if you put on charity, ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of your Lord Jesus Christ; you will not need to worry about sins, for charity shall cover the multitude of sins, and your doubts will vanish because charity is the bond of perfectness, and the end of commandment out of a pure heart. Charity, then, is the one thing which we must all possess. We must coax it, cajole it, pamper it; anything to get it. And when we do get it, make it the central rallying point for thought; speak it and act it, that you may become sound in it; let flee all youth ful lusts and follow charity, and then you may call on the Lord out of a pure heart, and join with Paul in saying, We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth.
