Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: September 7, 1911 It was as necessary that the conference presidents should meet together as that the elders should meet in Priesthood meetings. He (president Clawson) appreciated the privilege of thus meet ing with them. They were very near to him. He needed their help in carrying on the work of the mission. It was necessary that he should have an opportunity to express himself to them, and they to him, as to the best methods and policy to be adopted in their work, that there might be harmony. They must be on intimate terms to attain that result. He respected the authority of the presidents, and desired that a spirit of harmony and oneness should prevail. Any misunderstanding would be disas trous to their work. It was fitting that they should thus meet together, before the conferences commenced, to develop unity of spirit, and carry the same into the mission field. In continuing, President Clawson said there was no special program for this convention. He desired the presidents to make a report as to their work in the field, and any questions as to the same could be put forth and discussed. There had been quite a falling off in the work of the mission the last year all along the line. They had seventy-three elders more in the field in July, 1910, than in July, 1911. This had told seriously on the work. The agita tion of recent months had also told against them. He desired to express his absolute confidence in and love for the brethren who were presiding over the different conferences in the mission. President Clawson concluded by bearing testimony to the divinity of the mission of Joseph Smith, and prayed that the blessing of the Lord would be with the brethren there assembled, giving them power and influence for good among the elders and saints over whom they presided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: September 21, 1911 Any general description, however, of heaven or hell is not to be found in the revealed word of God, and so it becomes very evident that our Heavenly Father must have had some wise reason in with holding any information of the kind from His children upon the earth. If the employments of heaven, its marvelous and dazzling scenery, its music, and the appearance and clothing of its inhabit ants, and any other such information had been fully described, such description, however attractive, could never have operated as greater inducements than those which we already possess, to live righteous and careful lives here upon earth, or to become more heavenly minded; while on the other hand, by the depiction of heaven as the dwelling place of holy, active, and loving beings, who find a constant happiness in all around them, because their outward conditions are entirely in harmony with their own inward states, we learn what we are expected to be like in order to enjoy an inheritance amongst the saints in light; and to this end, there fore, we are led to endeavor to grow daily more and more after the order and likeness of heaven. By the unerring law of spiritual affinity, like is ever drawn to like, consequently, unless we con tinually grow, now that we have the opportunity to do so, more in accordance with that pattern of purity, love, obedience, and activity which God's word reveals to be the condition of those blessed ones who dwell in His presence, an association with them hereafter would be anything but congenial to our ruling desires and loves; hence our Heavenly Father has presented to our view only so much of the life to come as is amply sufficient both to induce, and to enable us to try, while in this probationary exist ence, to conform ourselves to that same pattern, and fit ourselves to enjoy a lasting fellowship with the pure in heart, to whom our Lord's promise has been given that they should see God. It is unwise to suppose that after death God will, in some mysterious manner, so efface the individuality of each of us as to change us all suddenly into holy and happy beings, however cold and indifferent to the things of truth and righteousness we may have been in the present life. Beyond the grave our lives are continued and developed, and we shall enter the next world just as we have made ourselves in this one, neither better nor worse, and the more we improve our opportunities, train our powers, exercise our faculties, gain wisdom, and become good, obedient, and faithful here, so much the more advanced we shall be when the struggles of life are over, and so much the more favorable shall we find our environments in the existence that lies before us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: February 9, 1911 Redeemer, His Son Jesus Christ. So there is but one plan of redemption and salvation for the human family. That being so, in the justice of God, who is the very embodiment of that eternal principle, all His children must, at some time and in some place, become acquainted with that gospel, learn what it is and have the opportunity of receiving it and obeying it, or of rejecting it if they will - for the principle of free agency 'is an eternal and abiding principle. It exists in all intelligent beings, the sons and the daughters of the great God who has given them that privilege to choose light or darkness, truth or error, good or evil, to take which course they prefer. Although there are, of course, many influences surrounding them, either for good or for evil, to which they may yield themselves, and to which they may become subject, yet in them, inherent, God-given, God-planted, is the principle of free agency, the power to receive or to reject the truth; to live accord ing to light, or to walk in darkness. So, at some period in the history of all the sons and daughters of Adam's race, there must come a time when they can hear that which God wants them to do, and take their choice. Whether they be in the body or out of the body, they are the same persons; people are not changed, simply because they shuffle of this mortal coil. They are the same persons as they were before they came into the body, and will be the same when they pass out of the body. Every indi vidual soul Will preserve its own identity, worlds without end. So, I say, there is a grand and glorious work to be performed, and I do not expect to cease my exertions and labors when the time comes for me to depart hence. I shall go, I presume, as I have done ever since I have been in the Church, where I am sent, and try to do the work allotted to me, and to do it with my might, to put my powers and energies into it, and to perform such duties as are incumbent upon me to the extent of my abilities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: July 20, 1911 Mormon missionaries there is a deeper and stronger faith in the Christ than is possessed by these other laymen. Yes, the Latter day Saints not only have greater assurances of the divinity of Jesus Christ than their brethren in other Christian churches have; but these stronger assurances which the Latter-day Saints have are Showing and revealing themselves in actual faith which leads them to do and dare for their religion. Now, my brethren and sisters and friends, I rejoice in these as surances of the truth which have come to us. With all my heart I am proud of my standing in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am proud to be classed with the splendid men and women of this Church. I am proud of the history of this Church. I am proud of the sacrifices which the saints have made in the past and are making to-day. I tell you Mormonism is a reality; it is not a myth; it is nbt a phantom; it has been sent into the world to redeem the children of men. May we be true to its teachings; may we serve God and keep His commandments, is my prayer, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. - Deseret News. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: June 15, 1911 N 0 man has spent his life in vain whose aim and ambition has been the betterment of himself. No fountain is so small but that heaven may be imaged in its bosom. Some years ago we met an old gentlemen who had been active in newspaper work in Salt Lake City during the early sixties, and who was well acquainted with President Brigham Young. After our introduction had been graciously acknowledged by the old gentleman, we began asking about the great man, who, under the guiding hand of Omnipotence, was so instrumental in directing the destinies of what was to become a mighty people, whose religion was to be heralded to all the nations of the world. He told us of his knowledge of the Mormons during those early days, of his intercourse with Brigham Young and of his impres sions of the residents of the territory of Utah. He was unstinted in his praise of the hardy pioneers and their fearlessness in overcoming the natural conditions which seemed to be against them. He said the language of many of them would have been a barrier, under any other circumstances, for it was with difficulty they were able to make themselves understood, for they came from several foreign countries. Without the leader they would all have perished, but with a boldness that, to many would have appeared terrifying, their dauntless leader wrested victory from the very jaws of death and under the guiding hand of Almighty God planted those people in the desert; and their fruit has been of the choicest variety and has done honor to the world and will yet be chosen from among men to standardize the mode of living. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: September 28, 1911 Daniel, the young Hebrew prophet, had the vision of futurity opened up to him, and saw the time when God would establish a kingdom upon the earth, never more to be thrown down. (dan. 2: 44; 7: Many hundreds of years after Daniel's time, Jesus of Nazareth came upon the earth, and told His disciples to pray for the kingdom to come, and through one of His apostles He revealed how the kingdom was to be finally established. John, the beloved apostle, says, I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel (or laws of the kingdom) to preach unto them that dwell on the earth. (rev. 14: It would naturally be supposed that the heavenly messenger would be endowed with authority to empower men to admit citizens into the kingdom he came to establish, and that no one could take this authority to himself; and that He who might dare to' do so, without first being authorized, would render himself liable to the penalty which God's law inflicts upon impostors and usurpers. Seek ye first the kingdom of God, was the command of the great King, who in the future is to rule over this kingdom. Before we can do so, we must find out what it is like. We find that Jesus and His apostles placed on record the titles of the officers necessary in the kingdom, the laws to govern and control it, and the manner of admitting citizens. By turning to Paul's writings, we find that God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers. (i. Cor. If this is the pattern of the officers of the king dom (or church), all we have to do is to start upon our search and examine the various claims that are set up; for there are a multi tude of organizations that lay claim to have the title of the Church, or the kingdom of God. Now we have found what to search for. It is not necessary to seek among the heathen and pagan nations of the earth, for they lay no claim to the title. Then let us turn to the Roman Catholic Church and examine its claims. We find they have a pope, cardinals and priests, but no apostles, no prophets, no officers to correspond to the description given by Paul. Next let'us view the Protestant denominations. Go back to the earliest reformers. Examine all their organizations, and we find that none of them lay claim to having the officers in their churches, but, on the contrary, ignore and repudiate them by saying, They are no longer needed. Examine all denomina tions, all orders, all faiths, and we find that in this respect they are deficient and lacking, while weak, fallible man sets up his judgment, and by his own wisdom seeks to enter into the king dom of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: August 10, 1911 In the vision that I referred to just now, in section 76 of the Doctrine and Covenants, this splendid doctrine touched upon by our Savior, in the old times, is amplified; the Lord has revealed it to us, made it clear and plain, and it is one of the most glorious revela tions ever given to mortal beings, though it is not so regarded by the world. The time will come when they will understand it, per haps. I do not know that all the Latter-day Saints realize the fullness of its beauty and glory. They should read it repeatedly and ponder upon it. It opens eternity. Futurity is measurably made clear to the mental vision. The veil is lifted, and the glories of the celestial, the terrestrial, and the telestial spheres are plainly made manifest. We learn something about the opportunities that can be had by those who receive the gospel of Jesus Christ, and they will be entitled to this eternal and far more exceeding weight of glory than will come to those who, having rejected the truth or having neglected to receive it in this life, afterwards ob tain it in worlds to come. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: February 23, 1911 The missionary methods Of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter day Saints are open and above board. There is in them nothing to hide or cover up. The missionaries have a simple, gospel message to deliver that conforms in all respects both as to doc trine and organization, with the gospel as set forth in the New Testament Of the Bible. They sincerely believe that they are under a binding moral obligation to declare this message of truth and salvation to all nations; but the only avenues through which they can reach the people are by public hall meetings, street preaching, door to door tracting, and the press, when Opportunity Offers. Strict order and decorum characterize the Latter-day Saints' hall meetings, and order is maintained at the street meetings so far as circumstances and the usual conditions of noise and con fusion in the Open air will admit. The tracts treat gospel principles exclusively, and are handed to people at their homes in the spirit of courtesy and friendliness, and with a pure desire to do good. We think of Jesus as a person, and as God. If this is so, is it impossible to believe that as we are, God has been, and that as God is we may become? If reason by analogy has any force at all, it would seem that is the only logical conception of the Deity. But, as already said, the possibility or impossibility of belief has no bearing on the subject. The only question is, what has been revealed? The scriptures certainly represent God as a person. In the scrip tures we are told that man was formed in the image and like ness of God. There should be no difficulty in comprehending what is meant by this twofold expression, for in the same sacred record (gen. We read that Adam became the father of a son born in his own likeness, after his image. That man was formed in the image and likeness of God is, therefore, a statement that means no more and no less than the similar statement that the son of Adam was born in his likeness and image. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: June 8, 1911 It must be plainly stated that it is not the business of the Watch Committee to discuss such opinions. For years the Mor mons have had nearly a hundred legally registered places of worship in this country. They have a constitutional right to worship among us, and to preach their doctrines. If they commit any crime, they can be punished in a lawful way; but, short of that, it is the duty of the authorities to protect them in the exercise of their rights. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: July 27, 1911 The real Christian is not necessarily he who regularly each Sab bath dons his Sunday best and sallies forth with sober face and disapproving frown upon the world's follies, but he who each day can thank God that he lives, and prays to be of service to his fellow-men, helping and being helped, has found a nugget which will grow brighter with constant use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: August 31, 1911 Third, the Mormon people are not peasants or illiterate. Some of their forefathers may have been, but they are not. Their leaders are graduates of Harvard, Cornell, Michigan, or German universities, and some of their young men lead the world to-day in scholarship. Utah has a strong public school and university system; education and music are her pride. She has over five thousand college and university students. The chief charges against the Mormons have been polygamy, deception, bigotry, and the seeking of political power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: August 3, 1911 On March lst, under the leadership of Brigham Young, the camp began to move in search of a new home in some unknown place among the mountains. As a parting thought, President Young wrote in his diary: Our homes, gardens, orchards, farms, streets, mills, bridges, public halls, magnificent temple, and other public improvements we leave as a monument of our patriotism, industry, economy, uprightness of purpose, and integrity of heart, as a living testimony of the falsehoods and wickedness of those who charge us with disloyalty to the Constitution of our country, idleness, and dishonesty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: Thursday, February 16, 1911 That is what it means, in the Scriptures, when it says that no man has seen God at any time. Certainly not, in the fulness of His glory, because He is like a consuming fire. 'now, in short, this is the Deity that we have to declare to the world-not some mysterious something or nothing that no mind can grasp, but our Father who is in heaven, who will hear our prayers, who loves us, because we are His children. Sometimes He dislikes our ways, and is angry because of our wickedness, but He desires our'welfare, and He had a plan prepared, before the foundations of the earth were laid, for the exaltation and uplifting, the progress, the development of His children, that they may go on from stage to stage, from light to light, from glory to glory, and be able to ascend into His presence and see Him as He is, and be one with Him, as Christ is, and as the Holy Ghost is - three separate and distinct individuals, forming the presiding power of Deity, but separate persons in every respect.
