Jack gasped as I hauled my OB bag and bucket over the fence."It just comes from growing up around them," I said. "I get surprised by one every once in a while, but most of the time, I know what they are going to do before they do it."In these real-life stories from forty years of veterinary practice in a small community in western Oregon, Dr. David E. Larsen captures the essence of daily life as a solo veterinary practice before the days of emergency clinics on every corner and specialty help within reach.Dave Larsen writes with equal respect and dedication about the animals he treats, all sizes, from bulls to mice, and of the life and death decisions their owners must make. He draws on the vast experience of his training, and applies the art of veterinary care that were taught to him by colleagues, many times lessening the tension in serious situations with subtle humor and providing needed education to grateful clients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of award-winning science fiction written by two-time Nebula award winner, Gardner Dozois. Here youll find Dozois short stories "Morning Child" and _The Peacemaker,Ó both winners of the Nebula for best science fiction short story. Also includes Dozois classics "A Dream at Noonday," "Chains of the Sea," "The Hanging Curve," "The Bride" (with Jack Dann), and "Ancestral Voices" (with Michael Swanwick). From the introduction: The stories in this collection were published between 1970 and 2003, and thus represent a considerable chunk, perhaps a majority share, of not only my career but my life. . .when some critic asks me what was in my mind when I came up with a certain trope in one of those stories, or what some bit of symbolism really means, why I chose some word or image instead of another, or sometimes even just what the specific inspiration for a story was, often I just cant tell him¾Im not that kid anymore. . .So, perhaps its an odd way to review your career, by the places where youve lived. Probably not very satisfactory to the critics. The most disgruntled among them will just have to get that time-machine and go back and ask that bright-eyed young twenty-year-old kid about his work. If you see him, say hi for me. Gardner Dozois is known for his beautiful evocation of setting and emotional intensity within a truly alien and often austere vision of the future. He is a science fiction master of the first order¾a fact fully on display in this outstanding collection. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). _Lyric, haunting, heartbreaking¾this is science fiction at its best.Ó¾George R.R. Martin Science Fiction Hall of Fame Inductee Gardner Dozois is the winner of two Nebula awards for fiction. _My generation of writers has produced relatively few authentic masters of the short form. Gardner Dozois is one of them.Ó¾William Gibson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is to share and inform real-life experiences of a veterinary practitioner. I tell real stories of my pre-veterinary and veterinary career in the Smokey Mountains / Appalachian / East Tennessee area. Maybe too graphic for some, it is the way it has been for me as I pursued this career. I hope and intend to share heartwarming and interesting stories of people and animals-domestic and exotic. I now know the importance of the animal kingdom to us. It is simply ecological history! Our interaction with them and theirs to us can be humorous, loving, sad, traumatic, and educational-well, you know what I mean! Some of these stories are not only recording what I have experienced, but recording the history of people and animals of this area that may be lost otherwise, i.e., stories that involve coon hunting, family survival dependent on their animals, weird predicaments animals get themselves into, weird predicaments we get into treating them medically and surgically. There are even stories which would be lost if I didn't get it down on paper, like dumping outhouses in the middle of town on Halloween as good mischievous fun, murder stories deep in the mountains, to surfing on a pig's back! Snakes, coatimundis, black panthers, lemurs, cockatoos, turtles, ferrets, deer, goats, puppies, kittens, calves, foals, piglets, kids (goat and human!), raccoons, possums, tigers, potbelly pigs, flying squirrel orphans, blind dogs, deaf dogs, three-legged cats, mean mares, killer cows, spoiled iguanas, sick fish, house fire victims, abused animals, orphans-let's breathe. How funny! This menagerie of a living circus on planet earth is so abundant that it is impossible to get it down on paper or cyber. However, this is my attempt to tell you as much as I can about my veterinary experiences-funny or sad! I intend for this to be entertaining and hopefully informative, too. Through joy, pain, and suffering we learn, and we learn more and more in our interaction with our animal cousins how important we are to each other. live to learn-learn to live. LOVE TO LEARN- LEARN TO LOVE

Readers acquainted with Jackson's first collection will find the familiar cast of family members -- Grampa, Grama, Daddy, Mother, Jackie and her siblings, and Daddy's brother Trever and foster sister, Esther -- joined by others who have a part in the workings of the farm and the surrounding community. You will meet Miss Egan, who creates a stir as a woman barn hand; Charlie, a one-armed milkman who mysteriously vanishes; and Aunt Lillian, who almost single-handedly keeps the farm going through the 1918 flu epidemic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resistance of the human spirit in face of time, disloyalty, and oblivion is the theme of Marina Sonkina's new collection of short stories. Her seemingly naïve and helpless protagonists inhabit disparate social stations, geographical locales and cultures; all are persons displaced in their own lives. But in their struggles for survival, they discover the redeeming and dangerous power of unconditional love - the only weapon available to them. Strange and incomprehensible to everyone, love makes its sudden appearance to an eight-year-old hunchbacked boy in the title story of Lucia's Eyes. As he brings the gifts of his artistic imagination to Lucia, a refugee from the Spanish Civil War, the bleak and cruel reality of Stalin's Russia dissolves into magic ... In 'Runic Alphabet' a Polish-Canadian painter plants a tree that brings to life memories of a woman long dead who remains the only true love of his life. In 'Carmelita' an aging man from Winnipeg, vacationing in Mexico, falls in love with a young Mexican painter. In 'Christmas Tango' a jobless drifter in snowy Montreal discovers tango, inadvertently transforming his own life and the lives of those who come in contact with him. In 'Tractorina' a hard-working crane-operator, retired in post-Gorbachev Russia, is driven into a rose-tinted abyss by her stepson. In 'Angels Ascending and Descending' a young girl is initiated into the mysterious symbolism of Russian Orthodox church architecture by a priestly man who hardly lives up to the spiritual heights he preaches. Full of unexpected turns and twists, sadness, joy and humour, these stories reflect life, itself always a surprise, and always a miracle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hey, Everyone! I’m Jessie Gussman and I write love stories. I guess some people think that a writer’s life is glamorous. Especially a romance writer. This book was written to disabuse that notion. I’m kidding. That’s not the purpose of this book, although it’s a definite effect. It’s true that I’m a USA Today bestselling author, which, I have to admit, surprises me as much as anyone. My husband and I also own a trucking company. We have two twenty thousand bird free-range laying houses (our eggs are probably in your grocery store!), raise grass-fed beef cattle, homeschool our kids and are on a first-name basis with the Game Warden and the state police (mostly because of the kids and not really my husband). I frequently cook for strangers, occasionally hide from my family and own more fire extinguishers than the average person (for good reason). Sometimes, when I sit down at my computer, instead of writing the next chapter in my latest romance, I write about my life. Sometimes it’s fun. Sometimes funny. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking and sometimes you just see life through the eyes of a farmer, growing older every day and maybe just a little wiser. We do a lot of laughing, some crying and every day is a learning experience wrapped in the love of God and held in His hand. That’s what I share with you in this book. Thanks so much for spending some time with me today! Love, Jessie Reviews for Stories from Jessie Gussman's Newsletter: ★★★★★ "Jessie is an author that can make getting bunted by a cow or helping a cow have a calf interesting and educational. Book excerpt: “Marla” is a realistic, sensitive, tragic, yet humanely told life story of a Brown Swiss dairy cow with appreciation and recognition of the relationship between farmer/rancher and the animals in their care. Though some liberties have been necessarily taken, the story is told from the cow’s perceptive much like Anna Sewell’s story of “Black Beauty” a horse--loved, then abused and later rescued and Richard Adams’ portrayal of the journey of a colony of rabbits in “Watership Down”. Those classics sold over 500,000 copies. Years later, new generations, still buy and read these books. Whether human or animal, one’s surroundings and circumstances effect development, personality, soul, and heart. It is the authors’ hope that enlightenment regarding cows may spark wisdom and nurture kindness toward all creatures.

Book excerpt: For the love of Bessie, grab a glass of milk, pull up a comfy chair, and partake of a cow tale or two These 40 stories by farmers and ranchers in the U.S. and Canada will open your eyes to what really goes on in those pastoral scenes with Holsteins, Jerseys, and other cattle breeds. Read about a 101-year-old cowgirl, close calls with bulls, cows and cops, steer roping, cattle branding, herds escaping, and the lovely dairy princesses promoting the healthful dairy industry. Be an armchair traveler with "Miss Lait" (Miss Milk) on her 1954 trip to France, meet a cow called "Grandma," read up on milking cows with baseball players, and see how butter magically turns into the likenesses of princesses. Meet "Patty" and "Paige" - - the Mother's Day cows, follow "Ferdy" the friendly bull, and learn about "Lulu" - - on the loose. "True Cow Tales is a true joy to read. If you have an association with livestock agriculture you will enjoy these short stories and poems. These brought back many memories of growing up on our family farm. True Cow Tales ought to be a part of everyone's family library and should be shared over and over." - Ken Rahjes, Farm Broadcaster for KRVN Radio, Lexington, Nebraska "As the world is further removed from agriculture, it's increasingly important to learn more about your sources of food, fiber and fuel. True Cow Tales is a truly moo-ving tribute to the beef and dairy industries, from the joy of buying your first cow and naming her Patty - yes, Cow Patty - to the wonder of watching a cow nurse an orphaned calf to the sorrow of no longer being able to financially support your farm. This anthology vividly depicts the importance of agriculture through a collection of stories and poems about the lives of farm animals and the dedicated people who care for them." - James Henry, AgriNews Publications Executive Editor "This anthology is an interesting gathering of a wide variety of stories and reminiscences regarding acquaintances and encounters with cattle." - Heather Smith Thomas, rancher and author of Storey's Guide to Raising Beef Cattle (1998); Essential Guide to Calving (2008); Cattle Health Handbook (2009); and more than 9000 stories and articles about cattle and horses. Ever moo to a cow - - or try not to? You may love cows more than you even realized. For a laugh, check out "Cattle Sillies." Need some adventure? Then turn to "Bovine Drama." Favorite cows are the theme of a chapter by that name. For a walk down "memory lane," flip to "Bovine Wistfulness." And for something quite different, enter the world of "Dairy Princesses" and meet the beautiful young women who love cows and spend an entire year of their lives promoting the dairy industry and handing out milk and cheese samples. Cheddar anyone? Follow your "inner moo." Read these stories for old time's sake, or just come along for the ride. And don't forget to drink your milk

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hi! I’m Jessie Gussman and I get emails all the time from people who spewed their coffee/half-chewed toast/cereal out all over their e-reader. Or who woke up their spouse while reading my newsletter because they were laughing so hard. Or who save my emails until they get home from work because they don’t have the kind of job where howling and rolling on the floor is acceptable conduct. But not every story in this book is laugh-out-loud funny. Some of them will make you cry. Some will make you think. And some of them will make you shake your head and wonder how in the world someone like me has made it through life without being put in a straight jacket and carted away. Not even close. I get paid to write love stories. Lol Life is weird, I agree. I’m a wife, mother and farmer by day, romance novelist by night and in my spare time, I write about my life from prison. Kidding about the prison part. (At the time of this writing, anyway. No one has figured out if there was actually a body in the car that’s buried in my dad’s back yard – that story’s in the book, along with the time I caught myself on fire and my kid was laughing too hard to blow me out, how to charge a 1600 pound, angry mama cow (and why you’d want to), odd Amish courting rituals (involving frogs), and how not to fall out of your husband’s Peterbilt as he’s driving down the interstate.) There is a lot of faith, family and fun in my fiction books, and WARNING: my real life has a ton of all that, too. But life on the farm is not always fun. Sometimes it’s hard and sometimes it hurts and those stories are in here, too. Thanks so much for choosing to spend a little time with me today! Love, Jessie Reviews for Stories from Jessie Gussman's Newsletter: ★★★★★ "This book of newsletters is actually better described as a collection of short, real-life stories by Jessie that will leave you snorting with laughter, and sometimes, struggling with tears. " - Mari ★★★★★ "I absolutely love Jessie Gussman’s books and I always thought we should have to pay for her newsletters, but thank heavens we don’t. This is a book I highly recommend even if you’ve never read a Jessie book you still enjoy the stories of living on the farm being the mother of four and others and the relationship with her and her husband. An absolute treat." - Janalyn ★★★★★ "I've been reading this book to my husband whenever we're riding in his truck together. We're both loving it! Many laugh out loud moments!" - Amber ★★★★★ "This is a faith-based writing that is so touching that it not only will inspire the reader but entertain you in a clean and wholesome way. Jessie’s real-life stories about her family and life on their farm made my day! This really is a must-read charmer!" - Crystal ★★★★★ "This book had me laughing out loud, crying, and wondering how in the world people can live with themselves sometimes. I truly don't know when Jessie finds time in her life to write, but when she does, it's an experience. I love Jessie's honesty, spirit, love, generosity, human-ness, kindness, parenting style, relationship with God." - Janet Books in the Stories from Jessie Gussman's newsletter series: 1. This generation of the Gohman family thrived as they adapted to the changes in their lives from the horse and buggy times to the days of the jet plane.
