Book Synopsis The Ultimate Challenge by : Jeffrey C. Lagarias
Download or read book The Ultimate Challenge written by Jeffrey C. Lagarias and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-04-19 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The $3x+1$ problem, or Collatz problem, concerns the following seemingly innocent arithmetic procedure applied to integers: If an integer $x$ is odd then “multiply by three and add one”, while if it is even then “divide by two”. The $3x+1$ problem asks whether, starting from any positive integer, repeating this procedure over and over will eventually reach the number 1. Despite its simple appearance, this problem is unsolved. Generalizations of the problem are known to be undecidable, and the problem itself is believed to be extraordinarily difficult. This book reports on what is known on this problem. It consists of a collection of papers, which can be read independently of each other. The book begins with two introductory papers, one giving an overview and current status, and the second giving history and basic results on the problem. These are followed by three survey papers on the problem, relating it to number theory and dynamical systems, to Markov chains and ergodic theory, and to logic and the theory of computation. The next paper presents results on probabilistic models for behavior of the iteration. This is followed by a paper giving the latest computational results on the problem, which verify its truth for $x < 5.4 cdot 10^{18}$. The book also reprints six early papers on the problem and related questions, by L. Collatz, J. H. Conway, H. S. M. Coxeter, C. J. Everett, and R. K. Guy, each with editorial commentary. The book concludes with an annotated bibliography of work on the problem up to the year 2000.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles collected in this volume give a broad overview of the current state of surface science. Pioneers in the field and researchers met together at this Solvay Conference to discuss important new developments in surface science, with an emphasis on the common area between solid state physics and physical chemistry. The contributions deal with the following subjects: structure of surfaces, surface science and catalysis, two-dimensional physics and phase transitions, scanning tunneling microscopy, surface scattering and surface dynamics, chemical reactions at surfaces, solid-solid interfaces and superlattices, and surface studies with synchrotron radiation. On each of these subjects an introductory review talk and a number of short research contributions are followed by extensive discussions, which appear in full in the text. This nineteenth Solvay Conference commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Solvay Institutes.

Book Synopsis Pneumatic Servo Systems Analysis by : Ling Zhao
Download or read book Pneumatic Servo Systems Analysis written by Ling Zhao and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on pneumatic servo systems analysis, control and application in robotic systems. The pneumatic servo systems are composed by pneumatic artificial muscles or cylinders, which are two important pneumatic actuators in industrial application. The active disturbance rejection control technique is used effectively to solve strong nonlinearity and uncertain factors for the pneumatic servo systems. Nonlinear feedback control, back-stepping control, finite-time control, sliding mode control and several other control laws are proposed to make the pneumatic servo systems have better control performances. The book establishes a fundamental framework for this topic, while emphasizing the importance of integrated analysis. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in this field and engineers working on the applications of pneumatic servo systems. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Book Synopsis Political Risk Intelligence for Business Operations in Complex Environments by : Robert Mckellar
Download or read book Political Risk Intelligence for Business Operations in Complex Environments written by Robert Mckellar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macro-level dynamics and modelling are well represented in the mainstream political risk literature. However, not many writings on the subject get their hands dirty in terms of revealing the hard, nuanced and practical work behind knowing what the issues might be for a specific foreign operation in a sensitive or volatile context, and how to plan for them. Political Risk Intelligence for Business Operations in Complex Environments provides international managers, and by extension their organisations, with a foundational understanding of political risk analysis and planning for on-the-ground operations in challenging times and places. This means having a fluid grasp of what political risk means and why it matters in the organisation’s context, and how relevant intelligence can be gathered and analysed to inform decisions and planning towards an operation’s socio-political resilience. The book explains: How and why political risk manifests and the forms it can take Company attitudes and operational attributes as a political risk variable Understanding the operational implications of socio-political dynamics and trends Stakeholder identification and analysis for informed engagement planning Scenario analysis to prepare for long-term contingencies and discontinuities Holistic, intelligence-driven political risk management planning Tactical intelligence exercises to maintain awareness and inform adaptation Intelligence management, collection and quality control Ethical considerations in political risk management Rather than being bound by conventional notions of risk, the book emphasises the dynamic relationship between a foreign operation and its host environment and milieu as a source of both challenges and opportunities to manage them. Concepts, frameworks and practices are rounded out with real-world examples and relevant lessons from the author’s experience as a political risk consultant.
