This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on the Dead Sea Scrolls as Background to Postbiblical Judaism and Early Christianity (St. Andrews, Scotland, 2001) gathered scholars from a wide range of specialties and perspectives from around the world to explore how the Scrolls contribute to our knowledge of the background of both rabbinic and noncanonical forms of Judaism, and of the origins and early development of Christianity. This volume publishes papers from the conference which deal with the Scrolls and: rabbinic literature; Christian origins; Pauline and Deutero-Pauline literature; and Jewish and Christian liturgy, mysticism, and messianism. It comprises an excellent sketch of the state of the question at the beginning of the twenty-first century and is also programmatic for future research.

Book Synopsis Writing and Reading the Scroll of Isaiah, Volume 2 by : Craig C. Broyles
Download or read book Writing and Reading the Scroll of Isaiah, Volume 2 written by Craig C. Broyles and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second part of a 2-volume work, this study combines recent approaches that treat the formation and early interpretation of the final form of the book of Isaiah with the more conventional historical-critical methods that treat the use of traditions by Isaiah's authors and editors. Studies investigate Isaiah's use of early sacred tradition, the editing and contextualization of oracles within the Isaianic tradition itself, and the interpretation of the book of Isaiah in later traditions (as seen in the various versions of the text and various communities). Contributors of this volume include virtually all of the major scholars of Isaiah and the leading scholars of biblical interpretation in the intertestamental, New Testament, and early Jewish periods.
Book Synopsis Untersuchungen zur verbalen Valenz im biblischen Hebräisch by : Michael Malessa
Download or read book Untersuchungen zur verbalen Valenz im biblischen Hebräisch written by Michael Malessa and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Damascus Document: A Centennial of Discovery by : J.M. Baumgarten
Download or read book The Damascus Document: A Centennial of Discovery written by J.M. Baumgarten and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers published in this volume were presented at the Third International Orion Symposium (1998), to mark the centennial of the discovery of the Damascus Document (CD) in the Cairo Geniza and the final publication of the 4QD manuscripts in the Discoveries in the Judaean Desert series. Since its discovery, CD has sparked lively debate about its sectarian origins and halacha, issues with far-reaching implications not only for the development of Jewish law but also for the very nature of Second Temple period Judaism and its continuity into the early medieval period. The contributors examine the physical reconstruction of CD, its relationship to other legal works in the Qumran corpus and to rabbinic law. Essays on specific legal topics, as well as historical perspectives, round out the volume.
Book Synopsis Weisheit und Prädestination by : Armin Lange
Download or read book Weisheit und Prädestination written by Armin Lange and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the attempt to overcome the crisis of knowledge in wisdom thought, even the non-Essene texts from Qumran developed the wisdom notion of a pre-existent order of being and history which was to be realised in the Eschaton. This notion was taken up in non-wisdom texts and elaborated into a dualistic ordering of the world and of history, structured in epochs. In this form the notion was used by the Essene community to deal theologically with their negative experience of reality (schism, persecution by Hasmonoaeans, delay of the Eschaton). The results of this investigation are thus able to confirm critical points of the thesis of G. von Rad that apocalyptic developed out of wisdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Damascus Document is one of the key texts to have been discovered in both spectacular Jewish manuscript discoveries of the 20 th century: the Cairo Genizah and the Dead Sea Scrolls. The legal part of this document has until recently received little scholarly attention. With the recent publication of eight manuscripts of the Damascus Document from cave 4, which provide a substantial amount of additional legal material, the legal part of this document is set to be the focus of research in coming years. This volume provides a detailed analysis of the Laws of the Damascus Document which fully incorporates the new cave 4 evidence. The author offers a close reading of the text and identifies a number of literary strata as well as a considerable amount of redactional activity.
