An orphan, Mike grew up as a ward of the state. Living with different families he has learned what hard work is and isn't afraid of it. What does scare him is losing some of his steers or heifers to the cattle rustlers who are working the area. One evening on his way to visit another rancher who has lost some steers, his horse is spooked by stepping on a dead body lying in the path and Mike is caught up in a murder mystery he must solve before he loses some of his own cattle. But while Mike and the Sheriff team up to find the killer some complications arise involving a little boy lost in the wilderness across the road from Mike's ranch and an old abandoned mine there Meantime, Mike marries and settles down to a happy and prosperous life. He buys more land and hires cowboys, but despite how rosy the future looks, suspicion keeps on growing inside Mike that something weird is going on in the old mine. When he investigates, he learns that old ghosts cast long shadows, a lesson that nearly costs him his life.

Book excerpt: Various folk who enjoyed reading The Hills That Beckon questioned the author, When are you going to write a sequel? After much consideration Mr. Long decided to comply with their requests. His first narrative was confined to the Poosey Ridge area of Madison County, Kentucky. The sequel goes beyond the borders written about in the first book and includes other areas hence, the title Beyond The Hills That Beckon. This writing differs by focusing on other families and events in the region rather than only the authors family. The reader will be reintroduced to the Poosey Ridge location from a perspective not addressed in The Hills That Beckon.

Book excerpt: Since the time of Freud, some of the most radical innovators within critical theory have stressed the importance of the body and its representation to the constitution of subjectivity. This book explores some of the theoretical debates surrounding the body, and assesses its value as a critical concept, through an analysis of the body’s representation both in Welsh literary texts in English, and discourse about Wales more generally. Combining psychoanalytic with more culturally orientated approaches to the body, the book offers an historically informed account of the body that analyses its role in the construction and contestation of identity at a cultural as well as individual level, contributing in a new and radical way to the rapidly expanding critical literature concerned with exploring the construction of identity in a Welsh cultural context.

Book excerpt: From the critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Sharon Kay Penman comes the story of the reign of King Baldwin IV and the Kingdom of Jerusalem's defense against Saladin's famous army. The Kingdom of Jerusalem, also known as Outremer, is the land far beyond the sea. Baptized in blood when the men of the First Crusade captured Jerusalem from the Saracens in the early twelfth century, the kingdom defined an utterly new world, a land of blazing heat and a medley of cultures, a place where enemies were neighbors and neighbors became enemies. At the helm of this growing kingdom sits young Baldwin IV, an intelligent and courageous boy committed to the welfare and protection of his people. But despite Baldwin's dedication to his land, he is afflicted with leprosy at an early age and the threats against his power and his health nearly outweigh the risk of battle. As political deception scours the halls of the royal court, the Muslim army--led by the first sultan of Egypt and Syria, Saladin--is never far from the kingdom's doorstep, and there are only a handful Baldwin can trust, including the archbishop William of Tyre and Lord Balian d'Ibelin, a charismatic leader who has been one of the few able to maintain the peace. Filled with drama and battle, tragedy and romance, Sharon Kay Penman's latest novel brings a definitive period of history vividly alive with a tale of power and glory that will resonate with readers today.
