Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates adaptations of The Lady of Shalott and Elaine of Astolat in Victorian and post-Victorian popular culture to explore their engagement with medievalism, social constructions of gender, and representations of the role of art in society. Although the figure of Elaine first appeared in medieval texts, including Malory’s Le Morte Darthur, Tennyson’s poems about the Lady and Elaine drew unprecedented response from musicians, artists, and other authors, whose adaptations in some cases inspired further adaptations. With chapters on music, art, and literature (including parody, young people’s literature, and historical fiction and fantasy), this book seeks to trace the evolution of these characters and the ways in which they reinforce or challenge conventional gender roles, represent the present’s relationship to the past, and highlight the power of art.

Book excerpt: This Companion to Victorian Poetry provides an introduction to many of the pressing issues that absorbed the attention of poets from the 1830s to the 1890s. It introduces readers to a range of topics - including historicism, patriotism, prosody, and religious belief. The thirteen specially-commissioned chapters offer insights into the works of well-known figures such as Matthew Arnold, Robert Browning and Alfred Tennyson, and the writings of women poets - like Michael Field, Amy Levy and Augusta Webster - whose contribution to Victorian culture has in more recent years been acknowledged by modern scholars. Revealing the breadth of the Victorians' experiments with poetic form, this Companion also discloses the extent to which their writings addressed the prominent intellectual and social questions of the day. The volume, which will be of interest to scholars and students alike, features a detailed chronology of the Victorian period and a comprehensive guide to further reading.

Everyone knows the legend. Of Arthur, destined to be a king. Of the beautiful Guinevere, who will betray him with his most loyal knight, Lancelot. Of the bitter sorceress, Morgana, who will turn against them all. But Elaine alone carries the burden of knowing what is to come--for Elaine of Shalott is cursed to see the future. On the mystical isle of Avalon, Elaine runs free and learns of the ancient prophecies surrounding her and her friends--countless possibilities, almost all of them tragic. When their future comes to claim them, Elaine, Guinevere, Lancelot, and Morgana accompany Arthur to take his throne in stifling Camelot, where magic is outlawed, the rules of society chain them, and enemies are everywhere. Yet the most dangerous threats may come from within their own circle. As visions are fulfilled and an inevitable fate closes in, Elaine must decide how far she will go to change destiny--and what she is willing to sacrifice along the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Australia’s most celebrated novels: one woman’s journey from Australia to London Nora Porteous, a witty, ambitious woman from Brisbane, returns to her childhood home at age seventy. Her life has taken her from a failed marriage in Sydney to freedom in London; she forged a modest career as a seamstress and lived with two dear friends through the happiest years of her adult life. At home, the neighborhood children she remembers have grown into compassionate adults. They help to nurse her back from pneumonia, and slowly let her in on the dark secrets of the neighborhood in the years that have lapsed. With grace and humor, Nora recounts her desire to escape, the way her marriage went wrong, the vanity that drove her to get a facelift, and one romantic sea voyage that has kept her afloat during her dark years. Her memory is imperfect, but the strength and resilience she shows over the years is nothing short of extraordinary. A book about the sweetness of escape, and the mix of pain and acceptance that comes with returning home.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Humboldt-University of Berlin, 32 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Once upon a time Umbert Eco quoted Tennyson's continental contemporary Mallarm who wrote about avoiding a single absolute word sense concerning the typo-logographic space and epistemic-symbolic landscape: "Einen Gegenstand benennen bedeutet, die drei Viertel des Genusses am Gedicht zu unterdr cken, welche aus dem Gl ck bestehen, nach und nach zu entschl sseln, es hervorzubringen ...] dies ist der Traum ...] Es mu vermieden werden, da ein einziger Sinn sich aufdr ngt: der leere Raum um das Wort herum, (...), die r umliche Komposition des Textes tragen dazu bei, dem Wort eine Aura des Unbestimmten zu verleihen und es auf tausend verschiedene Dinge hindeuten zu lassen." (Eco 1989, 121f.) Various literary critics describe a rather psychological dilemma within Tennyson's work in general which seems important for the understanding of The Lady of Shalott which in my opinion is not theme of this work. Once with-in the discourse of art and mythopoetics this dilemma resembles Tennyson's struggle for both artistic strategy as well as rhetorical and logical validity (Alaya 1970, 289.) Another remark refers to Tennyson's "difficulty in leaving the world and passing into "a Nameless, shadow-less realm" which insert the reader into autopoietic ordering "spaces between images and words." (Colley 1985, 370 and 377.) An expression of this dilemma we find in Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott with the metaphorical presence in absence of sword and primarily window which will be discussed later on. But the expressive representing or non-symbolic Nameless cannot exist if the symbolic is the only associative between the imaginary and the real which is the other side of the symbolic per se.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "My Last Duchess (Unabridged)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "My Last Duchess" is a poem, frequently anthologised as an example of the dramatic monologue. It first appeared in 1842 in Browning's Dramatic Lyrics. The poem is written in 28 rhymed couplets of iambic pentameter. The poem is set during the late Italian Renaissance. The speaker (presumably the Duke of Ferrara) is giving the emissary of the family of his prospective new wife (presumably a third or fourth since Browning could have easily written 'second' but did not do so) a tour of the artworks in his home. He draws a curtain to reveal a painting of a woman, explaining that it is a portrait of his late wife; he invites his guest to sit and look at the painting. Robert Browning (1812 - 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse, and in particular the dramatic monologue, made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. His poems are known for their irony, characterization, dark humor, social commentary, historical settings, and challenging vocabulary and syntax. The speakers in his poems are often musicians or painters whose work functions as a metaphor for poetry.

Callie's quest was simple: to change the fate of the Lady of Shalott on a computer program and save her along with King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table. But when the five teenagers find themselves in Camelot, they become caught up in the illicit love affair between Lancelot and Guinevere, the intrigues of the court, and the ambition of the magical Morgan le Fay. Do they have enough courage to survive the dangers they face? And how can they find their way home when everything they have ever known and believed is challenged? What Callie finds in Camelot will break her heart, while her quest will change all of their lives forever. 'In this extraordinary trilogy Felicity Pulman shows both her understanding of the Arthurian legend, of the Shalott story, and a rich and imaginative capacity to expand and explore its deep meanings for today's teenagers. This is an unsettling, unusual, intriguing and moving series, rich in character, action and mystery, full of the atmosphere of Arthurian legend, yet without falling into the trap of mere retelling.' - Sophie Masson
