Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pageant of Great Women This publication is the first issued by The Suffrage Shop, whose promoters intend shortly to open premises in central London for the publication and sale of literature dealing with the Woman's Movement. Until the opening of these premises all orders for books and communications in general should be addressed to The Suffrage Shop, 31, Bedford Street, Strand, W.C. The Suffrage Shop desires to thank the proprietors of the Daily Mirror for permission to use the photographs of Miss Marion Terry as Florence Nightingale, and two groups of the characters; and Miss Lena Connell for that of Miss Ellen Terry as Nance Oldfield. The Author wishes to acknowledge her indebtedness to Mr. W. H. Margetson, whose Suffrage Cartoon suggested the employment of the figures of Justice, Womanhood and Prejudice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pageants and Pageantry The following chapters summarize briefly the experience of some years in producing and writing amateur plays and pageants. The teaching experience of the author has shown her that as a means of instruction, of inculcating literary appreciation, and of producing the historic sense, dramatic work has no equal. Far-away incidents become vital experiences, names and facts take on actuality, and that imaginative power that is ever keenest in children needs no urging when "the play's the thing." Nothing sends children so willingly to the library shelves as the desire to know something of the times they are going to portray, of the costumes they are going to wear, and of the manners they shall depict. Nothing will put them into the mediaeval spirit like acting out The Children's Crusade; nothing will make them feel the colonial temper like a play of Puritan times; nor will they forget Regulus or Vespasian, Charlemagne or Caxton, after they have seen them walk the boards of their school hall. Acting teaches more than the fact, trains more than the voice or the bearing, and besides all its intrinsic values, such work brings esprit de corps into the school where it flourishes, - furnishes incentives to good work, and keeps many an idle J-and unambitious child in school when otherwise he would have wandered his discontented way into truancy or the factory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A World Wide Pageant I had long recognized the latent desire that is in most people for "play acting," and felt the failure of the church in making use of this, seeming natural, instinct for the glory of the Kingdom. But when I began to cast about I found a dearth of suitable material. What I found was too difficult, too complicated in scenery or costuming, required too many rehearsals, or was in itself unappealing. The result was "The World Wide Pageant," in which I believe I have overcome all of these objections. This Pageant was written for use in my own church with no thought of its publication; but I have received so many requests for copies that I have decided to put it in print. In offering it to the public I must make certain grateful acknowledgements. To John Oxenham and Hugh Moss for certain verses adapted from their "Pageant of Darkness and Light." To Robt. W. Service for certain lines and phrases. To Rev. Herman C. Weber of the New Era Movement of New York for his encouragement in the publication. And last, but not least, to my faithful wife, Gertrude D. Campbell, whose knowledge of missions, customs and dress has enabled me to make the production a success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book of Words: The Pageant of Newark The stage beyond the narrow river lies dark, enveloped in thin veils of rising mist. A remote sound of Indian drums comes across the water, figures move mysteriously through the gloom, and a fire begins to blaze at the center. As the flames mount higher, the huts of an Indian Village appear and the figures are seen dancing in a swinging circle around the fire, their shadows flickering, enormous and distorted, upon the shifting mist. For a moment the dancing continues, then the fire sinks and a second light appears, this time over the lagoon - a lantern at the mast-head of a ship. As the ship crosses 311 the semi-darkness an English flag is seen at her peak and the hardy mariners of Cabot's crew tread her decks. A second ship, the ship of Verrazano, bearing the flag of France, passes in the opposite direction. Again the fire on the shore brightens. The Indians have ceased their dancing and a hunting party prepares to set out, when into their midst comes a runner warning them of approaching danger. He is followed immediately by the arrows of an attacking tribe. Shouting, the men of the village set themselves stubbornly to defend it. For a moment the picture is one of savage battle. The men of the Village are driven back. From among the huts comes forward a group of frightened women, clinging together and bearing a white peace-belt. As they approach the fire a sudden fear seizes them and they scatter in flight. The attacking party shouts triumphantly and charges forward. Suddenly in place of the women appears a young chief alone, holding aloft a peace-belt. He is received scornfullyby the men of the tribes but the peace-belt is accepted. The women come forward and surround him, for thus it was that the old legend of the Peace Making of the Lenni Lenape was born. As the attacking tribe withdraws, the lights die down and the men of the returning tribe are dimly seen. Now a third ship appears, in likeness to the Half-moon, a Dutch flag at her bow, and from her side a small boat makes the landing. Men from this boat go ashore and the leader seems to speak to the Indians. A quarrel arises between them, and the Indians threaten. The white men retreat to their boat pursued by the red men. They fire their pistols as they row away and their leader falls, pierced by an arrow. The boat returns to the lee of the ship, which proceeds on its way. For a moment the fire flames up again and the dancing shadows mount against the mist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Trumpets announce the Pageant. A Herald rides up the field and pausing, proclaims: Ye who would learn the glory of your past And form a forecast of the things to be, Give heed to this a city's trumpet - blast And see her pictured life in pageantry. A mounted knight in silver armor, typifying the spirit of exploration and adventure, silently crosses the field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pageant of History: An Entertainment for Either Indoor Or; Out-of-Door Performance The cast of characters for each part will be found at the beginning of each scene. Many of these characters can be easily doubled; that is, the same actors can take part in one or more of the scenes by changing costumes. With this economy of material the entertainment can be given with a minimum cast of fifteen male and nine female characters. It can be more conveniently produced with a cast of eighteen male and twenty female characters, and as many as one hundred and thirty-eight males and two hundred and ten females have been employed in an extensive out-of-door production. Scenery may be employed with all possible elaboration when the performance is given in a theatre or under conditions where this is possible; if given out-of-doors an appropriate natural background is, of course, selected. In either case the stage is concealed, when not in use, by an arras or a tableau-curtain, arranged to be parted in the middle and drawn away to the sides as the several scenes are revealed. This is referred to throughout the descriptions as the "Arras." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
