Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Labour International Handbook The scheme of this Handbook is two-fold. Part I. consists of reviews of the leading issues of international affairs and foreign policy from a labour standpoint. Part II. is intended as a guide to the international labour movement. The field attempted to be covered is wide, in fact too wide for wholly satisfactory treatment; but it was felt that in the absence of any available book, some preliminary survey of this nature was needed for labour use. Its preparation has only been made possible by the willing co-operation of the many contributors who have put their special knowledge of particular questions concerned at the service of the labour movement. It is inevitable that a work of this character should be incomplete and subject to correction. Incomplete, because it is not possible in 300 pages to produce even a bad reference book of the world in general; and therefore it has been thought better to aim instead at selecting for treatment a few of the more fundamental issues of general international affairs, even at the expense of serious omissions. Only in the second part, in dealing with international labour organisation, has a compact survey been attempted. Subject to correction, because not only must all surveys of foreign affairs from a particular country be subject to the limitations of the focus of that country and the transmitted character of the information, but in particular because, in the primitive conditions of the after-war world, records have gone to pieces and the chronicling of the international labour movement is no longer a simple tabular affair, bat an adventure into uncertain and changing country. On International, an important chapter in the social history of Europe, I have had the good fortune to be able to consult the Minute book and other documentary sources. I have given great attention to the First International because I believe it to be an episode whose importance to European labour, and to British economic history has been seriously underrated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Labour Legislation T the close of the International Labour Conference, A at Washington in November, 1919, Mr. H. B. Butler, the secretary-general of the Conference, suggested to me that I might write its history. Since, how ever, an official verbatim record of the proceedings is to be published, it seemed a more profitable expenditure of the time which I could give to this task to attempt not so much a detailed examination of the debates and transactions of the Conference, as a brief exposition of its province, structure, and achievement. I have therefore written this short account of the Inter national Labour Organisation, of which the Conference is the legislative authority, and of its relation to the purpose and fabric of the central instrument of the new international order, the League of Nations. My main desire has been to stimulate interest in these embodiments of the international idea, and to awaken, in what measure I can, public concern for our responsibility towards them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labour as an International Problem: A Series of Essays Comprising a Short History of the International Labour Organisation and a Review of General Industrial Problems Thus its occasional intervention to avert wars does not constitute the only, nor even the primary work of the League of Nations. If it is to justify its existence, its energies must be concentrated ceaselessly in helping to solve the vital, social and economic problems of our day which involve dangers to the domestic peace of every nation - dangers in some respects as disastrous and wasteful as the ravages of war. If the worth and promise of the League Of Nations to-day is judged by the actual achievements of the International Labour Office in this field of troubled potentialities during the Short time Since its inception, no thoughtful man will remain doubtful as to the usefulness of the League or take a hopeless View about its future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful Handbook examines how labour unions across the world have experienced and responded to the growth of neo-liberalism. Since the 1970s, the spread of neo-liberalism across the world has radically reconfigured the relationship between unions, employers and the state. The contributors highlight that this is the major cause and effect of union decline and argue that if there is to be any union revitalisation and return to former levels of influence, then unions need to respond in appropriate political and practical ways. Written in a clear and accessible style, the Handbook examines unions' efforts to date in many of the major economies of the world, providing foundations for understanding each country. Policymakers, analysts, academics, researchers and advanced students in employment, industrial and labour relations as well as political economy will find this unique Handbook an important resource to understanding the contemporary plight and activity of labour unions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coffee from East Africa, wine from California, chocolate from the Ivory Coast - all those every day products are based on labour, often produced under appalling conditions, but always involving the combination of various work processes we are often not aware of. What is the day-to-day reality for workers in various parts of the world, and how was it in the past? How do they work today, and how did they work in the past? These and many other questions comprise the field of the global history of work – a young discipline that is introduced with this handbook. In 8 thematic chapters, this book discusses these aspects of work in a global and long term perspective, paying attention to several kinds of work. Convict labour, slave and wage labour, labour migration, and workers of the textile industry, but also workers' organisation, strikes, and motivations for work are part of this first handbook of global labour history, written by the most renowned scholars of the profession.
