Book excerpt: 1999, on the threshold of a new millennium, the novelist Daniel Langham lives a reclusive life on an idyllic Greek island, hiding away from humanity and the events of the past. All that changes, however, when he meets artist Caroline Platt and finds himself falling in love. But what is his secret, and what are the horrors that haunt him? 1935. Writers Jonathon Langham and Edward Vaughan are summoned from London by their editor friend Jasper Carnegie to help investigate strange goings on in Hopton Wood. What they discover there – no less than a strange creature from another world – will change their lives forever. What they become, and their link to the novelist of the future, is the subject of Eric Brown's most ambitious novel to date. Almost ten years in the writing, The Kings of Eternity is a novel of vast scope and depth, full of the staple tropes of the genre and yet imbued with humanity and characters you'll come to love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sound of the choir of King's College, Cambridge - its voices perfectly blended, its emotions restrained, its impact sublime - has become famous all over the world, and for many, the distillation of a particular kind of Englishness. This is especially so at Christmas time, with the broadcast of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, whose centenary is celebrated this year. How did this small band of men and boys in a famous fenland town in England come to sing in the extraordinary way they did in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries? It has been widely assumed that the King's style essentially continues an English choral tradition inherited directly from the Middle Ages. In this original and illuminating book, Timothy Day shows that this could hardly be further from the truth. Until the 1930s, the singing at King's was full of high Victorian emotionalism, like that at many other English choral foundations well into the twentieth century. The choir's modern sound was brought about by two intertwined revolutions, one social and one musical. From 1928, singing with the trebles in place of the old lay clerks, the choir was fully made up of choral scholars - college men, reading for a degree. Under two exceptional directors of music - Boris Ord from 1929 and David Willcocks from 1958 - the style was transformed and the choir broadcast and recorded until it became the epitome of English choral singing, setting the benchmark for all other choral foundations either to imitate or to react against. Its style has now been taken over and adapted by classical performers who sing both sacred and secular music in secular settings all over the world with a precision inspired by the King's tradition. I Saw Eternity the Other Night investigates the timbres of voices, the enunciation of words, the use of vibrato. But the singing of all human beings, in whatever style, always reflects in profound and subtle ways their preoccupations and attitudes to life. These are the underlying themes explored by this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dive into the rich tapestry of ancient Egypt's spiritual realm with an enlightening exploration of the Egyptian Goddess Nut, a pivotal figure in the Ancient Egyptian religion. This meticulously researched volume opens up the world of goddess worship during the Old Kingdom period, from 2650-2135 BCE, setting the stage for a fascinating journey back in time. Inspired by an insatiable curiosity and profound respect for female deities of antiquity, the author invites readers to navigate the celestial and terrestrial domains of the Ancient Egyptians. The book unravels the intricacies of divine feminine power and the crucial roles these deities played in the religious and cultural life of the time. Central to this narrative is the sky goddess Nut, a deity of profound importance and intrigue. Nut, often depicted arching over the earth in a protective embrace, was seen as the physical sky and the spiritual dome of the universe. Revered as the mother of the universe, Nut's persona exemplifies the timeless power of the feminine divine in the shaping of ancient cosmologies. Nut's expansive womb encapsulated the cosmos, giving birth to the sun, moon, and stars. This birth of the universe was a fundamental aspect of ancient Egyptian cosmology. Each night, Nut would swallow the sun, then travel through her body overnight to be reborn at dawn, embodying the eternal cycle of death and rebirth. One of the most compelling aspects of the narrative is the description of rituals involving the transmigration of the king's soul, a pivotal practice in the ancient Egyptian religion. Intimately associated with the sky goddess Nut, these rituals ensured the king's transformation into a spiritual body, enabling him to reign in heaven. This book promises a journey of discovery, delving into the heart of ancient Egyptian spirituality. Readers will gain a deepened understanding of goddess worship, the role of female deities, and the cultural significance of these divine figures. With the turn of each page, one steps back into a time when the universe's mother spread her star-spangled body over the world, offering protection and symbolizing the potent and nurturing divine feminine. Engage with the profound depth of ancient wisdom and open your eyes to the breathtaking world of the Egyptian Goddess Nut.

Investing in Eternity examines the Bible’s conditional promises of blessing and concludes that the doctrine of rewards is one of the most important teachings of the Bible. Faithfulness to God will be rewarded – forever. There is literally no limit to the blessing God will bestow upon those (and only those) who love and serve Him in this life. So, the stakes are infinitely high for every follower of Christ. We have this life, and this life alone, in which to earn God’s reward.

Yet extensive research and careful analysis of scientific literature seems to show that our existence may continue beyond what we currently understand. It is possible that we will transition through different stages, adapting to new environments and circumstances. Therefore, the future holds the potential for exciting discoveries and a deeper understanding of what it means to be alive. In an academic presentation, consultant geriatrician Dr. Kawa Amin delves into the fascinating realm of immortality and the attempts throughout history to overcome the inevitability of death. While intertwining scientific evidence with philosophy, faith, and theology, Dr. Amin delivers a comprehensive qualitative analysis while meticulously considering several dimensions in relation to immortality and clarifying complex concepts such as resurrection, life, and death. Life, Death, and Eternity combines scientific research with faith and philosophy to provide a deeper understanding of the concept of resurrection and the spiritual aspects of life and death.
