Book excerpt: The classic collaboration from the internationally bestselling authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, soon to be an original series starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant. ?Season 2 of Good Omens coming soon! “Good Omens . . . is something like what would have happened if Thomas Pynchon, Tom Robbins and Don DeLillo had collaborated. Lots of literary inventiveness in the plotting and chunks of very good writing and characterization. It’s a wow. It would make one hell of a movie. Or a heavenly one. Take your pick.” —Washington Post According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon—both of whom have lived amongst Earth's mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle—are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist . . .

Book Synopsis Taking Aviation to New Heights by : Jacqueline Cardinal
Download or read book Taking Aviation to New Heights written by Jacqueline Cardinal and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating biography of Pierre Jeanniot is much more than a portrait of the man who was at the helm of Air Canada and of the aviation industry: it is a compelling case study of how a business man is born and goes on to achieve financial success, social status, and political sway. The young Jeanniot learned to survive during the bombing of Rome, the occupation of France and as a witness to the Resistance in the Jura Mountains. The 1963 Sainte-Thérèse air tragedy, together with the threat of finding himself jobless, inspired him to create the famous data flight recorder, or 'black box.' Under his direction, Air Canada chose the Airbus rather than the Boeing to renew its fleet, in the midst of a highly visible political crisis. Against all odds, Jeanniot also orchestrated the successful privatization of the airline. His visionary speech in Amman, delivered while he was at the helm of the International Air Transport Association, laid out modern aviation's most urgent priorities in accident prevention, environmental protection and technological progress. A master of logistics, he successfully negotiated the restart of air travel in the aftermath of 9/11. Book jacket.
Download or read book The Border written by James Laxer and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2010-05-14 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insightful, prescient and often funny, The Border explores what it means to be Canadian and what Canada means to the giant to our south. If good fences make good neighbours, do we have the sort of fence that will allow us to maintain neighbourly relations with the world’s only superpower? In The Border, well-known political scientist and journalist James Laxer explores this question by taking the reader on a compelling 5000-mile journey into culture, politics, history, and the future of Canadian sovereignty. Long ignored (or celebrated) as “the world’s longest undefended border,” the line between us and the US is now a stress point. The attacks on the World Trade Center announced to the world that North America is no longer a quiet neighbourhood and made our relationship with the US one of the most pressing questions facing Canadians. The porousness of the border is sure to be more problematic as the world becomes more troubled. Canadian officials complain of American pornography, drugs, untaxed cigarettes and, especially, guns moving northwards. For their part, the FBI and US Customs Service blame Canada for the infiltration of Chinese gangs smuggling immigrants and, more urgently, third-world terrorist cells based north of the border. Drawing deeply from history and anecdote, Laxer shows that for all our neighbourly good will, the Canada-US border has been contentious since the American War of Independence. In the mid-1800s the Americans tried to seize the west coast up to the 54th parallel. On the other hand, until 1931 the Canadian Army’s “Defence Scheme Number One” was to launch a surprise attack on the US with Mexico and Japan as allies. But beyond the fraught politics of the border, Laxer discovers another legacy as well. Travelling the country from Campobello island in the east to Richmond BC in the west all the way up to the Alaska panhandle in the north, Laxer meets people who live within a stone’s throw of the foreigners on the other side, and who share with him tales of friendship and rivalry, smuggling and trade that have shaped the character of their communities.

Download or read book Air Canada written by Peter Pigott and published by Dundurn.com. This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Begun as a social experiment in 1937, Air Canada has evolved into one of the world’s greatest airlines. Air Canada: The History explores a modern miracle that has made commercial air travel in our country an everyday occurrence. The airline was born in 1937 as "Trans Canada Airlines," a ward of the Canadian National Railway. Renamed "Air Canada" in 1964 to reflect its status as a jet-age airline, it survived devastating air crashes, financial deficits, self-serving politicians, strikes, privatization, and the Airbus scandal. It was reviled in the nineties by the likes of Peter Newman, who joked, "If God had meant Man to fly, he wouldn’t have invented Air Canada." Today it is a much loved national icon. Fortunate at times to be run by great CEOs like Gordon McGregor and Claude Taylor, Air Canada has fought off a hostile takeover, merged with its arch-rival Canadian Airlines, and touched countless lives during its 75-year history. This is its story.

Book Synopsis Between Interests and Law by : Thomas Hale
Download or read book Between Interests and Law written by Thomas Hale and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We could not have a global economy without a system to resolve commercial disputes across borders, but the international regime that performs this key role bears little resemblance to other institutions underpinning the global economy. A hybrid of private arbitral institutions, international treaties, and domestic laws and courts, the regime for commercial dispute resolution shows that effective transborder institutions can take a variety of forms. This book offers the first comprehensive social scientific account of this surprisingly effective regime. It maps and explains its evolution since the Industrial Revolution, both at the global level and in the United States, Argentina, and China. The book shows how both political economy approaches and socio-legal theories have shaped institutional outcomes. While economic interests have been the chief determinants, legal processes have played a key role in shaping the form institutions take. The regime for commercial dispute resolution therefore remains between interests and law.
