On a mission to establish a silver mine, they make the dangerous journey to the new capital of Addis Ababa, where they are welcomed by Menelik, the King of Kings. But Italy has designs on Abyssinia, and there are rumours of a plan to invade... Back in Cairo, a devastated Penrod seeks oblivion in the city's opium dens. When he is rescued by his old friend, Lorenzo De Fonseca, now in the Italian army, and offered the chance to assess the situation around the Abyssinian border, Penrod leaps at the chance of action. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Everyone who has raved about Elizabeth Chadwick as an author of historical novels is right."—Devourer of Books on The Greatest Knight In another remarkable work of medieval fiction, Elizabeth Chadwick continues the tale of The Greatest Knight, and shares a story of power, chaos, and the price of loyalty. William Marshal's skill with a sword and loyalty to his word have earned him the favor of kings, the lands of a magnate, and the hand of Isabelle de Clare, one of England's wealthiest heiresses. But he is thrust back into the chaos of court when King Richard dies. The vindictive new king clashes with William, claims the Marshal lands for the Crown—and takes two of William's sons hostage. The price of his loyalty to the Crown suddenly seems too high and the very heart of William and Isabelle's family is at stake. Fiercely intelligent and fearing for the man and marriage that light her life, Isabelle plunges with her husband down a rebellious path that will lead William to more power than he ever expected. Brilliantly researched and deeply compelling, Elizabeth Chadwick delivers another masterpiece of medieval historical fiction, with favor, drama, and damaged loyalty that will keep you rapt until the very end. "Elizabeth Chadwick is a gifted novelist and a dedicated researcher; it doesn't get any better than that."—Sharon Kay Penman, New York Times bestselling author More Novels of Elizabeth Chadwick's William Marshal: The Greatest Knight The Scarlet Lion For the King's Favor Templar Silks To Defy a King

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recorded history of precolonial Burmese empire and the modern state of Myanmar starts with the kingdom of Bagan in the eleventh century. The oldest surviving written records and structures are from the reign of King Anawrahta (1044–1077). Anawrahta converted to Theravada Buddhism and created a vibrant Buddhist state in the Irrawaddy River basin. Anawrahta is a folk hero to this day in Myanmar and is widely credited as a charismatic and pious leader who consolidated various ethnic groups throughout the region into a single nation. The Wheel-Turner and His House traces the archaeological and historical record of Anawrahta and his seminal position in forming modern Myanmar, based on the few sources that have been recovered. The Great Chronicle, an important history of the country written by the 18th-century Burmese nobleman U Kala, forms the basis for much of the knowledge we have about Anawrahta today. Geok Yian Goh examines U Kala's work in light of the context of U Kala's own time and points out the bias of his royal court, as well as the scribe's personal views from the elaborate narratives he produced. She looks at other sources as well, including unpublished palm-leaf manuscripts, to disentangle earlier knowledge about Anawrahta and eleventh-century Bagan. Placing the overall study of Burmese historical tradition within the larger manuscript culture of Asia, Goh presents a critique of theoretical issues in history, especially the relationship between the past and memory. In order to analyze the expansion of Anawrahta's historical image that formed the development of a Buddhist ecumene in the eleventh and twelth centuries, Goh utilizes published and unpublished texts in Burmese and classical Chinese, along with northern Thai and Sri Lankan texts, many of which Goh makes available for the first time in English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trent Jonah (T.J.) Bolesky was a silly goofball, classic prankster, and overall happy kid. From the moment of his birth until the tragic accident that took his life at age sixteen, he lived life with passion and gusto. No one knew T.J. better than his best friend and father. As he shares the true heartwarming story of his sons journey through life, his father provides a glimpse into T.J.s lively spirit as he chronicles his antics that included teaching himself to growl like the little lion cub in the movie, The Lion King, at just six months, allegedly riding a notorious outlaw rooster like a horse, puffing cigars with his Uncle Andy, and barraging his family with mischievous pranks as a teenager. While commemorating T.J.s short yet joyous life with entertaining anecdotes and insight into his sons earth-shattering premonition, his father illustrates that his son, who shined a bright light until the day he died, was truly one of Gods angels and a kings lion bound for home. In this true story, a father celebrates the life of his son through joyous and poignant remembrances that serve as a gentle reminder to never take life for granted and always have faith in Gods plan.
