Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King's Highway, Vol. 1 of 3: A Novel He had no defensive armour on, indeed, though those were days when the soldierly cuirass was not yet done away with; and on his head he only wore an ordinary hat trimmed round with feathers. He seemed, however, to be a personage perfectly. Well able to defend his own, being not. Much short 'of six feet in height; and though somewhat thin, extremely muscular, with long bony arms and a wide deep chest. His fore head was high and open, ' and his eye frank and clear, having withal some shrewdness in its quick twinkle. The countenance was a good one; the features handsome, though a little coarse; and if it was not altogether prepossessing, the abatement was made on account of a certain in describable look of dissipation not absolutely to say debauchery, but approaching it which mingled with the expression of finer things, like nightshade filling up the broken masses of some ruined temple. His hair was somewhat prematurely grizzled; for he yet lacked several years of forty, and strong lines, not of 'thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King's Highway, or the Story of the Truthseekers' Club This little volume contains a story that is not alto gether fiction. The characters are taken from life, and most of the arguments have been heard again and again. The scenes depicted are those which have occurred in the author's presence during a ministry of a dozen years. This little story simply portrays in modern days what was prophesied by Isaiah: And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for the redeemed: the wayfaring man, yea fools, shall not err therein. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King's Highway, Vol. 2 of 3: A Novel About thirty miles from London, towards the sea-coast, there then stood a small ancient house, built strongly of brick. It was not exact ly castellated in its appearance, but yet in the days of Cromwell it had endured a Short Siege by a small body of the parliamentary troops, and had afforded time, by the resistance which it offered, for a small body of noblemen and gen tiemen attached to the cause of King Charles to make their escape from a superior party Of pursuers. It was built upon the edge Of a very steep mpe, SO that on one side it was very much taller than the other. It was surrounded by thick trees also; and though by no means large, it had contrived to get into a small space as many odd corners as a Chinese puzzle. The walls were very thick, the windows few and small, the chimneys numerous, and the angles innumerable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King's Highway, Vol. 8: A Study of the Present Conditions on the Foreign Field This text book is the outcome of a journey which it was my great privilege to take with my friend, Mrs. Henry W. Peabody, through the missionary centers of the Far East. We went out, not in the service of any one Board, but quite independently and at our own charges in order to be the better prepared to do the work which we had undertaken. We were accompanied by our daughters, and had the pleasure and benefit of seeing missionary work through the eyes of two alert college girls. Acknowledgment is made of the unfailing courtesy and boundless hospitality of the Missionaries of every denomination. They received us into their homes, met us at railway stations in the middle of the night, accompanied us on our journey, helped us through the intricacies of foreign travel, arranged scientifically planned itineraries for us, and showed us a wealth of Christian fellowship far beyond our poor deserving. The limitations of a study book, and the necessity of presenting general outlines forbid the telling of the stories so full of interest with which each station abounded. The same limits make it impossible to name any save a very few of the individual missionaries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Torchbearers on the King's Highway We are going to think about some good and brave men who have gone out from their homes as missionaries. These men have had many interesting and exciting adventures, and some day I hope you will want to learn more about them than there is time for in these Stories. But before we begin to learn about them, let us think for a moment what is meant by the words missionary and missions. You know how God sent His Son into the world, to teach people Of their Heavenly Father's love. SO we may think about the Lord Jesus as the First Missionary, because the words means someone who is sent. We know that He spent His life in doing good, and in teaching people how to Show their love for God by helping each other, or, as our catechism puts it, Their duty toward God, and their duty toward their neighbor.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Local Government: The Story of the King's Highway At the beginning of the year 1913 the Story of the King's Highway - an account of how, in England and Wales, the roads have actually been made and managed, from the earliest times down to the present day - may claim a certain topical interest. The advent on the roads of the automobile and the motor omnibus is producing effects, both on public opinion and on administration, which are curiously parallel to those produced, three centuries ago, by the coming in of the carriage and the waggon. The "New Users" of the roads in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, whose aggressions on the pedestrians and on the road surface were made the subject of persistent complaint in their day, are now themselves resenting the quite analogous aggressions of the "New Users" of the roads in the twentieth century. A hundred years ago, as our eighth chapter relates, the country was saved by "Pontifex Maximus Telford" and "Macadam the Magician." We do not find ourselves able to foretell the name of our twentieth-century deliverer, nor even the message that he will bring, or the office that he will hold! We limit our suggestions or predictions to the last two pages. The Story of the King's Highway seems to us worth telling as a study in administration. And, if we mistake not, it has an interest even for the general reader, unconcerned with "problems." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
