Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diseases of the Sinuses: A Comprehensive Textbook of Diagnosis and Treatment, 2nd Edition, offers the definitive source of information about the basic science of the sinuses and the clinical approach to sinusitis. Since the widely praised publication of the first edition, understanding of sinus disease has changed dramatically, mainly as a result of recent developments and new discoveries in the field of immunology. This updated and expanded edition is divided into sections addressing, separately, the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, medical and surgical management of acute and chronic rhinosinusitis. Special entities such as autoimmune-related sinusitis, allergy and sinusitis, and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease are discussed in separate chapters. The role of immunodeficiency is also addressed. The management section has been fully updated to incorporate new medical modalities and surgical procedures. Developed by a distinguished group of international experts who share their expertise and insights from years of collective experience in treating sinus diseases, the book will appeal to anyone who has an interest in sinus disease, including both physicians and allied health professionals. Internists, pediatricians, allergists, otolaryngologists and infectious disease specialists will find the book to be an invaluable, comprehensive reference. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners who work with specialists who treat sinus disease will also benefit from the book.
Book Synopsis The Sexuality of Christ in Renaissance Art and in Modern Oblivion by : Leo Steinberg
Download or read book The Sexuality of Christ in Renaissance Art and in Modern Oblivion written by Leo Steinberg and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983, Leo Steinberg's classic work has changed the viewing habits of a generation. After centuries of repression and censorship, the sexual component in thousands of revered icons of Christ is restored to visibility. Steinberg's evidence resides in the imagery of the overtly sexed Christ, in Infancy and again after death. Steinberg argues that the artists regarded the deliberate exposure of Christ's genitalia as an affirmation of kinship with the human condition. Christ's lifelong virginity, understood as potency under check, and the first offer of blood in the circumcision, both required acknowledgment of the genital organ. More than exercises in realism, these unabashed images underscore the crucial theological import of the Incarnation. This revised and greatly expanded edition not only adduces new visual evidence, but deepens the theological argument and engages the controversy aroused by the book's first publication.

Book Synopsis Advances in Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Related Computational Methods by : Christian Huck
Download or read book Advances in Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Related Computational Methods written by Christian Huck and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has distinguished itself as one of the most rapidly advancing spectroscopic techniques. Mainly known as an analytical tool useful for sample characterization and content quantification, NIR spectroscopy is essential in various other fields, e.g. NIR imaging techniques in biophotonics, medical applications or used for characterization of food products. Its contribution in basic science and physical chemistry should be noted as well, e.g. in exploration of the nature of molecular vibrations or intermolecular interactions. One of the current development trends involves the miniaturization and simplification of instrumentation, creating prospects for the spread of NIR spectrometers at a consumer level in the form of smartphone attachments—a breakthrough not yet accomplished by any other analytical technique. A growing diversity in the related methods and applications has led to a dispersion of these contributions among disparate scientific communities. The aim of this Special Issue was to bring together the communities that may perceive NIR spectroscopy from different perspectives. It resulted in 30 contributions presenting the latest advances in the methodologies essential in near-infrared spectroscopy in a variety of applications.

Book Synopsis The Place of Narrative by : Marilyn Aronberg Lavin
Download or read book The Place of Narrative written by Marilyn Aronberg Lavin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1990-12-15 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at more than two hundred Italian medieval and Renaissance mural cycles, Lavin examines—with the aid of computer technology—the "rearranged" chronologies of familiar religious stories found therein. "Like many masterpieces, Lavin's book builds upon a simple idea . . . it is possible to do a computer analysis of . . . visual narratives. . . . This is the first computer-based study of the visual arts of which I am aware that illustrates how those technologies can utterly transform the study of old master art. An extremely important book, one likely to become the most influential recent study of art of this period, The Place of Narrative is also a beautiful artifact."—David Carrier, Leonardo "Covering over a millennium and dealing with the whole of Italy, Lavin makes pioneering use of new methodology employing a computer database . . . [and] novel terminology to describe the disposition of scenes of church and chapel walls. . . . We should recognize this as a book of high seriousness which reaches out into new areas and which will fruitfully stimulate much thought on a neglected subject of very considerable significance."—Julian Gardner, Burlington Magazine

Book excerpt: Some rules are made to be broken. My name is Lucian Luck-but don't let it fool you. Fortune rarely smiles upon me. I've survived my hard-knock existence by the skin of my teeth. When a mistake puts me at death's door, I'm spirited away to Nitehelm's Wilderness Academy for shifters. The Wilds are a carnal place and the academy is no exception. Divided into four houses, the students make the rules-and here, only the strong survive. I can't tell if starting over in this strange world is a blessing or a curse. Yet when three powerful, handsome men from rival houses get their hands on me, I feel my luck start to change. There's only one problem: dating between houses is forbidden. Saber, Renard, and Tiberius are hotter than I can handle, and when we collide, rules are broken and sparks fly. Each of them wants a piece of me, and I'm more than happy to share. But their companionship-and devotion-puts a target on my back. What's worse, I learn my mortal life was a lie-and unsurprisingly, the truth isn't any better. There's a monster inside of me, and if I don't learn how to control it, I can kiss my men and my new life goodbye. INITIATION is the first novella in Xya Olsen's My Harem Academia series. Follow Lucian and his mates as they claim and fight for their happily ever after. This story is filled with love, magic, action, steamy m/m(+) scenes, and features harem and (in later books) mpreg.
