Book Synopsis Making Place through Ritual by : Lea Schulte-Droesch
Download or read book Making Place through Ritual written by Lea Schulte-Droesch and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian indigenous societies are especially known for their elaborate rituals, which offer an excellent chance for studying religion as practice. However, few detailed ethnographic works exist on the ritual practices of these societies. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Jharkhand, India this book offers insights into contemporary, previously not described rituals of the Santal, one of the largest indigenous societies of Central India. Its focus lies on culturally specific notions of place as articulated and created during these rituals. In three chapters the book discusses how the Santal "make place" on different local, regional and global levels through their rituals: They reaffirm their ancestral roots in their land during large sacrificial rituals. They offer sacrifices to the dangerous deities of the forest in exchange for rain. And they claim their region to be a "Santal region" through large festivals celebrated in sacred groves, which they link to national and global discourses of indigeneity and environmentalism. Through an analysis of the rituals of a specific society, this book addresses broader issues. It presents an example of how to study religion as a practical activity. It portrays culture-specific perceptions of the environment. And last, the book underlines the potential that lies in choosing place as a lens to study social phenomena in context.

Download or read book Inside Chhattisgarh written by Ilina Sen and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare portrait of Chhattisgarh, its people, and development For thirty years, until his conviction in 2010 by the High Court, pediatrician Binayak Sen and his sociologist wife Ilina worked among people in Chhattisgarh’s tribal heartland. They came here seeking fresh ideas for change—and stayed on. This fascinating memoir illuminates their journey and how their world imploded. Ilina vividly describes their years at the trade union CMSS, led by the iconic Shankar Guha Niyogi, where Binayak and three doctors started a hospital, and she organized workers’ education, joined the feisty women mine-workers’ struggles, and discovered the rich local history, cultural and farming traditions. These experiences later found expression in Rupantar, their own NGO, and when the new state’s government sought their advice for its women’s policy and for Mitanan, a precursor of the national rural health mission. Candid and deeply felt, the book celebrates Chhattisgarh but also laments the lost opportunity for its inclusive and violence-free development.
Book Synopsis Subjects of modernity by : Saurabh Dube
Download or read book Subjects of modernity written by Saurabh Dube and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book thinks through modernity and its representations by exploring critical considerations of time and space. Drawing on anthropology, history and social theory, it investigates the oppositions and enchantments, the contradictions and contentions, and the identities and ambivalences spawned under modernity. Crucially, it understands these antinomies not as errors, but as constitutive elements of modern worlds. The book questions routine portrayals of homogeneous time and antinomian blueprints of cultural space, while acknowledging the production of time and space by social subjects. Instead of assuming a straightforward, singular trajectory for the phenomena, it views modernity as involving checkered, contingent and contended processes of meaning and power, which have found heterogeneous historical elaborations over the past five centuries. Bringing together past and present, theory and narrative, it sows the historical, ethnographic and methodological deep into its critical procedures, offering an innovative understanding of cultural identities and imaginatively exploring the relationship between history and anthropology.

Food epitomizes the social for the Gadaba of Odisha. Feeding, sharing, and devouring refer to locally distinguished ritual domains, to different types of social relationships and alimentary ritual processes. In investigating the complex paths of ritual practices, this study aims to understand the interrelated fields of cosmology, social order, and economy of an Indian highland community.

Book excerpt: Bends and Shades is a profile of a life journey. As the surrounding setting, societal values and practices underwent unexpected changes, that life would be seen in a new perspective with every bend. Unprecedented political developments in the India-Pakistan-Bangladesh subcontinent impacted that journey too as did the evolving social fabric of life in the context of different faiths, discrete practices, and divergent but often conducive community living. Some of these bends touch upon the specific characteristics of certain races and societies while other bends capture historical specifics pertaining to geo-political conflicts including the Taliban phenomena and current fight against terrorism. Another touches upon the enigma faced by many immigrants, particularly in raising children in foreign lands, and highlights the need for better integration with their adopted society. As each bend in a river is shaded with different fragrance, so too the bends in the long arc of life
