Book Synopsis Protestant missionary children's lives, c.1870-1950 by : Hugh Morrison

This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protestant missionary children were uniquely ‘empire citizens’ through their experiences of living in empire and in religiously formed contexts. This book examines their lives through the related lenses of parental, institutional and child narratives. To do so it draws on histories of childhood and of emotions, using a range of sources including oral history. It argues that missionary children were doubly shaped by parents’ concerns and institutional policy responses. At the same time children saw their own lives as both ‘ordinary’ and ‘complicated’. Literary representations boosted adult narratives. Empire provided a complex space in which these children navigated their way between the expectations of two, if not three, different cultures. The focus is on a range of settings and on the early twentieth century. Therefore, the book offers a complex and comparative picture of missionary children’s lives.

Book Synopsis Negotiating the Numbered Treaties by : Robert Talbot
Download or read book Negotiating the Numbered Treaties written by Robert Talbot and published by Purich Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Morris, Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba and the North West Territories in the 1870s, was the main negotiator of many of the numbered treaties on the prairies and has often been portrayed as a parsimonious agent of the government, bent on taking advantage of First Nations chiefs and councillors. However, author Robert J. Talbot reveals Morris as a man deeply sympathetic to the challenges faced by Canada's Indigenous peoples as they sought to secure their future in the face of encroaching settlement and the disappearance of the buffalo. Both Morris and the First Nations negotiators viewed the treaties as the basis of a new, reciprocal arrangement, but by the end of his appointment, Morris was seriously at odds with a federal administration that preferred inaction over honouring its treaty promises.

Book Synopsis Periodicals of Queen Victoria's Empire by : Rosemary VanArsdel
Download or read book Periodicals of Queen Victoria's Empire written by Rosemary VanArsdel and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary research in periodical literature has demonstrated conclusively that the nineteenth century in Britain was the age of the periodical. It also has shown that, in Victorian society, the circulation of periodicals and newspapers was both larger and more influential than that of books. The six essays in this volume investigate the extent to which this was equally true of Britain's colonies during the period up to 1900. In chapters devoted to periodical publishing in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Southern Africa, and the 'outposts' of the Empire (Ceylon, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Malaya and Singapore, Malta, and the West Indies), the contributors also consider the function and importance of periodicals in colonial life. They identify and describe all locally produced publications that appeared at weekly or longer intervals and that contained, for example, local news, poetry, fiction, criticism, commentary on the arts, news from home, shipping information and commodities reports. Each chapter presents an evaluation of the quantity and quality of guides available to periodical literature in each region, from basic bibliographies of periodicals, directories, and finding aids, to microfilm records and databases on the Internet. Periodicals of Queen Victoria's Empire is an initial step towards understanding and analyzing what its editors regard as the 'unseen power' of the periodical press in the British Empire of the nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis Exhibiting Religion by : John P. Burris
Download or read book Exhibiting Religion written by John P. Burris and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revision of his dissertation (in religion, at U. of California, Santa Barbara), Burris (religious studies, Stetson U.) explores the development of a comparative study of religion as this can be deduced from the exhibits on world religion and culture at 19th-century world expositions. The book's four main themes are: the colonial mindset of the exhibiting of cultures and their religions, the effect of evolutionary theory on the defining of American religious and social hierarchies, the role of the expositions in popularizing the theory of social evolution, and the denigration of "primitive" peoples and their religions through comparative display. The text is as much cultural studies as religious studies and will appeal to those interested in American societal and intellectual trends of this period.
