Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Justice of the Duke He was dressed from head to foot in black; but through the slashings of his velvet doublet gleamed the rich yellow of an undervest of cloth-oi - gold a ruby studded girdle gripped his loins, and on his hip hung a heavy gold-hilted Pistoia dagger in a golden sheath of cunning workmanship. His tawny head was bare. Again came never so faintly the creak of that stealthy footstep behind him, and again it went unperceived. Nor yet did Cesare move when another and heavier tread rang on the staircase mounting to his room. Absorbed he continued his survey of Varamo's camp. The door was opened and reclosed. Someone had entered and was approaching him. Still he did not stir yet without stirring he spoke, addressing the new comer by name. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke Decides Englishman somehow conveyed the impression that he would not expect to be treated in re turn by his new acquaintance, who was pre pared to take advantage of his liberality. To do him justice, Hanbury's complacence was not entirely due to spirituous longings, but to a homesick instinct aroused by the Cockney accent of the vulgar stranger. The garish underground saloon into which they descended was almost empty at that early hour of the evening. Drinks having been set before them at one of the circular tables, the host subjected his guest to a scrutiny so searching that its object broke into a laugh. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke of Stockbridge: A Romance of Shays' Rebellion The Duke of Stockbridge was written by Mr. Edward Bellamy in 1879, at the request of the editor of a local paper in Great Harrington, Massachusetts. In the author's mind were already stirring the grave questions which he was soon to propound in Looking Backward; and when he undertook to write a romance of his native Berkshire Hills he chose, not unnaturally, the episode of the revolt of the debtor-farmers in 1786 against their harsh creditors and the oppressive State government. Although he wrote the story primarily for publication in an inconspicuous village paper, Mr. Bellamy was not the artist to allow the work to fall below the standard of his literary conscience; and as the tale grew upon his hands he soon was putting into it the rarest quality of his style, of his genuineness, and of his imagination, as well as the industry of his painstaking research. When the story was completed he refused the offers of publishers, and determined to delay its appearance as a book until after the publication of Looking Backward, which now had taken pressing shape in his mind. The Duke of Stockbridge was the projection of his sympathies into the forms of art; but he knew that, if published then, it would be received merely as a novel, and its depth of meaning would be perceived only by few. Therefore it seemed better that this tale should wait until he had given, in his next book, his formal and unmistakable definition of proper human relationship. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke School of Religion Bulletin, Vol. 4: February, 1939 Any such analysis of problems and resources ought to lead to suggestions as to practicable elements for a program of action. Naturally, these can be only brief, tentative, and intended for the stimulation of discussion and of suggestions from other sources. One practical contribution, urgently needed in our present age, is turning out students skilled in the processes of creative dis cussion. Our economic system is wracked with conflict because of the inability of sincere and often idealistic men to put aside animosities and to work together wholeheartedly for the common prosperity. Because our statesmen have not become sufficiently proficient in conciliation and reconciliation, based upon extending justice to others rather than merely demanding it for oneself and one's own nation, our international relations threaten to break out in a war which practically everyone dreads. Our political life becomes warped by animosities and our family life often ends in tragic conflict and divorce because our people are not sufficiently schooled in the processes of understanding one another and work ing out common programs of cooperative action. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging common interpretations of the political thought of John Adams and Adam Smith, Democracy, Equality and Justice offers an engaging and novel portrait of the political economy in America at its founding. The founders believed that liberty should not trump community, but should exist within the context of community. Drawing on extensive written records of the thought of John Adams and Adam Smith, the father of modern capitalism, Dr. John E. Hill argues that these two great men advocated a balanced, values-based, and just political economy. Adams, historically misperceived as a rugged individualist who favored aristocracy over democracy, actually emphasized political balance with no one socio-economic class dominating any other. Smith, incorrectly portrayed as a supporter of laissez-faire government, advocated economic balance with no class or individual receiving special treatment from the government. Applying their values of universalism and moderation today would significantly broaden the definition of morality in contemporary politics. Democracy, Equality and Justice is a stimulating and sophisticated text that will encourage debate over the relationship between historical ideas and contemporary economic problems.

The Duke d'orleans, or the Prince de Conti, the Duchess de Grammont, or perhaps Monseigneur the Dauphin, is driving by, accompanied by running footmen outriders, some of them Moors, and a dozen lifeguards, bring up the rear, gazed at by J ansenists and Molin ists, surly Brittany peasants, and fish women' from the Halle, musicians in braided jackets, and fantastic charla tans in flowing cloaks! They all smile, as if life were a perpetual round of pleasure. Each form of folly or of wis dom has its own mask and costume, demeanor and gesture, color and cut. One supposes the other peculiar be cause he thinks of himself; each is amused at the expense of all, loves himself most, and thinks Paris is the universe. The distinction of rank, the arbitrariness of the laws, the grim Bas tile, as well as the stern halls. Of justice, do not trouble the people individually. Every one believes that certainly pris ons do not concern him. All were omerry in the former Paris, because it was a privilege to talk of their discon tent; now all are sad, because of their tedious contentment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Design of Henry IV: From the Memoirs of the Duke of Sully and the United States of Europe, by Edward Everett Hale With Introduction The Complaint of Peace, although the most important essay by Erasmus in behalf of international justice and peace, was not his only nor his first impeachment of the war system. He discussed the same subject in his pane gyric to Philip, Duke of Burgundy, at Brussels, in I 504, and repeatedly afterwards. It is a thing, to be remembered that it was from the same land in which, at The Hague, the Parliament of Man was in our own time to hold its first memorable sessions for the definite inauguration of the organization of the world, that the first conspicuous and well-considered plea came for the supplanting of the war system Of nations by the methods of reason. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebrated Criminal Cases of America The hundred and ten cases presented in this volume should prove interesting to the general reader because of the psycho logical and, in many cases, the historical interest which attaches to them. This book also contains a brief history of the San Fran cisco Police' Department from the date of its organization; an accurate history of the far-famed Vigilance Committee; the Kearney riots; the life of Chief Justice Terry, including the famous duel in which he killed United States Senator Broder ick and his tragic death while assaulting Justice Field of the United States Supreme Court; also a synopsis of the police and municipal history of the great earthquake and fire, which contains much information which has not heretofore been published. While this volume will show that in some instances fabu lous amounts of money have been unlawfully obtained, it will also show that retribution invariably overtakes the professional criminal and brings with it untold misery and degradation. Although there are isolated cases where the perpetrator of an atrocious crime succeeds in escaping the iron hand of the law, there is one court he cannot escape, and that is the one whose findings are incontrovertible and whose sessions are held in the chambers of his own breast. The dread of discovery is constantly with him by day and by night, and who can doubt but that he finally concludes that even an ignominious death on a scaffold would be preferable to such a miserable existence. Neoliberalism is the normative rationality of contemporary global capitalism that orders people to live by the generalized principle of competition in all social spheres of life. Keri Day asserts that neoliberalism and its moral orientations consequently breed radical distrust, lovelessness, disconnection, and alienation within society. She argues that engaging black feminist and womanist religious perspectives with Jewish and Christian discourses offers more robust critiques of a neoliberal economy. Employing womanist and black feminist religious perspectives, this book provides six theoretical, theologically constructive arguments to challenge the moral fragmentation associated with global markets. It strives to envision a pragmatic politics of hope.
