Book excerpt: The Jungle Warriors portrays a much-decorated combat brigade fighting in the most controversial war in American history. Written by Bobby Briscoe, this book was published to fulfill a promise to the men who made up his unit--men not wanted by other commanders who came together as a fierce fighting force. Covering June 1967 through December 1968, Briscoe served as squad leader of the 11th L.I.B. (Light Infantry Brigade) which operated from Landing Zones Bronco and Liz outside of a village in northern Vietnam called Duc Pho. Briscoe tells this story as if to place you there. You will hear the gunfire, smell the napalm, suffer the oppressive heat, feel the fear, and witness the tragedies that occur in the personal lives of soldiers in war. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: In 1937, Ursula Bower visited Nagaland at the invitation of a friend, and on a dispensary tour encountered the Naga people. She was so taken was with their striking dignity, tribal pride and unique culture that she arranged to live among them to write an anthropological study. But she became more than an observer – living alone among them, Ursula was integrated into their village life, becoming their figurehead when in 1944 the Japanese invaded the jungles of Nagaland from Burma. The Nagas turned to her for leadership and with the support of General Slim, her Naga guides were armed and trained to patrol and repel the Japanese incursions. The Nagas’ courage and loyalty were duly recognised, and after the conflict Ursula, with Naga support, went on to run a jungle training school for the RAF. Later, with her husband, Tim Betts as Political Officer, she worked among the volatile tribes of the remote Apa Tani Valley, bordering Tibet. Following the Independence of India in 1947, Ursula returned to her highland roots, but to her death in 1988, her experiences among the Naga people shaped and directed her life.

Book excerpt: An engrossing, adventure-filled account of the rush to discover and save Vietnam's most extraordinary animals Deep in the jungle where the borders of Vietnam meet those of Laos and Cambodia is a region known as "the lost world." Large mammals never seen before by Western science have popped up frequently in these mountains in the last decade, including a half-goat/half-ox, a deer that barks, and a close relative of the nearly extinct Javan rhino. In an age when scientists are excited by discovering a new kind of tube worm, the thought of finding and naming a new large terrestrial mammal is astonishing, and wildlife biologists from all over the world are flocking to this dangerous region. The result is a race between preservation and destruction. Containing research gathered from famous biologists, conservationists, indigenous peoples, former POWs, ex-Viet Cong, and the first U.S. ambassador to Vietnam since the war's end, Gold Rush in the Jungle goes deep into the valleys, hills, and hollows of Vietnam to explore the research, the international trade in endangered species, the lingering effects of Agent Orange, and the effort of a handful of biologists to save the world's rarest animals.

The text follows the regiment from its time as mounted cavalry based in Fort Clark to New Caldonia, where the men gave up their horses to become infantymen in General Douglas MacArthur's conquest of New Guinea and the Philippines. Never as famous as the federalized infantrymen of the Texas 36th, the men of the 112th have often been overlooked in discussions of World War II, and this text seeks to restore them to their rightful place in the history of the Pacific theater operations.

Book excerpt: Justin Imperiale is now the King of The Islands and the King of Zaya.Seeing that Colonel Dakon Harkand, the Ambassador from Dorond, is about to marry Norva Lemni, the Ambassador from the PCP, and never one to miss an opportunity, Justin plans for the arrival of advanced civilization representatives who will supposedly come to attend the wedding. They will come to discuss trade with The Islands and Zaya.Following the wedding, Justin is stalked by assassins who he manages to kill without the use of firearms. He then uses the incident to use some of Colonel Harkand's Dorond Marines to catch the mastermind behind the assassins. During the wedding, there are any number of advanced civilizations who are anxious to discuss the purchase of an anti-gravity barge from Justin. He see that the gravity barge is one reason why his old enemies, the Arquellians, want to kill him, while the rest of the advanced civilizations want to keep him alive. He realizes that advanced technology is necessary to keep him alive. Justin also realizes that he must obtain more scrolls from the Temples of Vorell.A problem arises in Zaya, due to a water shortage and he is able to solve the problem with a simple device. However, the solution to the problem leads to a sort of micro-war with some Zayan's. Justin's forces win the war and he obtains a 'cheap copy' of an Arquellian energy weapon that he believes may not be a cheap copy. Justin also manages to extend his Kingdom a bit further South, as the farmers who accept his solution to the water shortage also accept his rule. As Justin tries to attract new business to Zaya, a man named Omaro approaches him. Omaro is the chief of a jungle tribe and his people are being abused by Zayans that Justin doesn't control. Omaro tells Justin about a magic sword and a scroll that contains secrets of the sky.Justin obtains the sword and the scroll at the cost of a war in the jungle and a visit to a mysterious temple in the jungle. He discovers that the 'magic sword' that he obtained is a sword used by a Prince of a centuries old civilization based in the South Continent. The sword is a high technology item and tells him the story of a march from the South Continent mountains to the jungle of Omaro's people.Needing money to finance his new Kingdom of Zaya, he then travels to the South Continent with some of Omaro's warriors to recover emeralds hidden by the Prince who carried the sword and the scroll from the South Continent to Omaro's jungle. The recovery of the emeralds involves a battle with a jungle tribe in the South Continent. During the adventures involving the emeralds, Justin discovers that the mysterious South Continent civilization that delivered him the magic sword probably came from an advanced civilization planet. The advanced civilization planet was home to a race of warrior priests and their religion is very similar to the teachings of the Priests of Vorell. Justin suspects a connection to Lord Vorell himself. Among the emeralds that Justin obtained from the South Continent is one called 'The Eye of The World.' The emerald has some magic/advanced technology properties and will aid Justin in the expansion of his kingdom. He then travels to Mervon for a meeting of the Association of Nations and to sell some of the emeralds. There is an attempt to rob his hotel room and the forces of the South Zayan government are caught red handed. The result is that Justin is now recognized by the Association of Nations as the King of Zaya.

Book excerpt: Courage. Endurance. Mateship. Sacrifice. These values, engraved in stone at the Isurava war memorial, have become synonymous with the Australian experience during the Kokoda campaign of 1942. The story of Kokoda and of the fighting in Papua has been told and retold in books, films and documentaries, but these popular narratives rarely explore beyond this one campaign. Kokoda: Beyond the Legend critically assesses not only the campaigns in Papua and their context in the wider lengthy Pacific war, but also the actions of senior Australian, American and Japanese military leaders. Moving beyond the legend, this book addresses the central question of why Kokoda holds such a significant place in Australian military history. In this book, Karl James brings together eminent military scholars to reassess the principal battles from both Allied and Japanese perspectives, providing readers with a more complete understanding of one of the major turning points in the Second World War.
