Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jubilee Book of Canterbury Rhymes Of the poems included in this volume, twelve are printed now for the first time: as to the rest, the names of the books, magazines, or newspapers in which they previously appeared are given in the text. The arrangement is mainly chronological; but it has not been thought advisable, for the sake of preserving this sequence, to separate poems by the same author. Many readers will perhaps be disappointed at missing from the selection this or that poem they remember; for much good verse has probably altogether escaped the Editor's search; and much he has been compelled to pass over from the necessary limitations to the size of his volume. The Editor desires to express his thanks to all those writers, to whom he was able to apply, for the permission, in every case readily granted, to reproduce their work: to the proprietors of the Lyttelton Times and Canterbury Times, the Christchurch Press and Weekly Press, the Otago Witness, and other papers and magazines for allowing him to reprint verses that first appeared in their journals: and to Messrs. Whitcombe and Tombs for the interest they have taken in the publication and the care and taste they have bestowed upon its production. For the information given at the end of the volume, he is largely indebted to the "Notes" to both editions of the Canterbury Rhymes; while several of the biographical sketches are condensed from Cox's "Men of Mark in New Zealand." Of the work of editing and writing this little volume, the greater part has been done on a sick-bed, the whole in hospital. Under these circumstances, the Editor has been obliged to draw largely on the kindness of his personal friends for help in the work of searching "files," copying MSS., and reading proofs; for the help so generously given, he begs them accept his most sincere thanks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goldie skillfully reveals the ambivalence of white writers to indigenous culture through an examination of the stereotyping involved in the creation of the image of the "Other." The treacherous "redskin" and the "Indian maiden," embodiments of violence and sex, also evoke emotional signs of fear and temptation, of white repulsion from and attraction to the indigene and the land. Goldie suggests that white culture, deeply attracted to the impossible idea of becoming indigenous, either rejects native land claims and denies recognition of the original indigenes, or incorporates these claims into white assertions of native status. After comparing the works of Canadian author Rudy Wiebe and Australian author Patrick White, Goldie concludes by linking the results of his literary analysis to wider cultural concerns, particularly land rights. He shows that literary views of natives, both positive and negative, emphasize the same charac-teristics and he suggests that escape from this limited vision may open the door to solving the problems of native sovereignty.
