Book excerpt: [Abstract] This study is a heuristic investigation of the experience of feeling rejected. The goal was to explicate the essence of the experience through structure and meaning. The research involved three basic phases: 1) investigating the literature, 2) exploration and immersion in to the researcher's personal experiences of feeling rejected, and 3) exploring the personal experiences of others in discovering the wholeness of the nature and meanings of the experience of feeling rejected. The study was founded on a human science framework, using a heuristic model to examine the experience. The focus was on the discovery of meaning and the specific question was, how do people experience feeling rejected? Major phases of the process were immersion, incubation, illumination, explication, and creative synthesis. Personal interviews were used in obtaining descriptions and illustrations of other's experiences of feeling rejected. The above processes, the key themes, and structures of the experience were discovered. The structure of rejection reflects the complex nature of the experience as it relates to the individual and his/her experience of self in relation to self, time, and space. The experience is conceptualized in terms of a process--a series of interrelated stages that are lived by the individual. Feeling rejected is a painful experience, one marked by loss, loss of relation to the world, loss of a sense of self. It is also marked by change and healing, a reintegration and redecision about one's personal meaning in life.
