I have recorded this plant under the above name in deference to Schiffner and others, as it is in all probability the same plant as is already recorded from several localities, of one of which Schiff ner (hedwigia, xli. P. 287) writes: Die zweischichtigen Blatter lassen keinen Zweifel fiber die Richtigkeit der Bestimmung. Dr. Salter's plants have the leaves in the whole of the upper part bi-stratose, but the capsule, especially in no. 26, tapers at the base into the seta entirely as in 0. Rupestre. Unless O. Sturmii is to be separated from O. Rupestre on the ground of the bi-stratose lamina alone (and intermediate stages even of this character are frequent), it appears to me quite impossible to define any constant concourse of characters to distinguish it from O. Rupestre. - O. Rupestre Schleich. On old escobon stem (cytisus prolifer), Cumbre de Candelaria (no. 0. Fr., teste Cardot. A tall, arboreal form, which is quite distinct from the plant above mentioned, and can not be separated from O. Rupestre. This species (apart from the above 0. Sturmii) does not appear to have been recorded from the Canaries, or, indeed, from the Atlantic Islands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Botany, British and Foreign, 1863, Vol. 22 The following notes, collected during the past year, are in continuation of our paper in Journ. Bot. 1883, p. 20, and previous papers. The most important records are Chara Braunii, from Lancashire, not previously found in Britain; a new variety of C. fragilis, from Perth; C. vulgaris var. melanopyrena, from Cornwall; and Tolypella prolifera, from Lincoln. We have to thank our correspondents for the large number of specimens we have received, and especially Mr. Arthur Bennett for many specimens which he has transmitted to us from other botanists, besides those collected by himself. Much still remains to be done, in working out the comital distribution; from many counties we have only received one or two species, and from the following we are still without a single record: - Somerset S., Wilts N., Gloster E., Monmouth, Worcester, Glamorgan, Brecon, Carmarthen, Denbigh, Flint, Cheviotland, Man, Wigton, Ayr, Renfrew, Lanark, Selkirk, Linlithgow, Kincardine, Aberdeen N., Banff, Westerness, Dumbarton, Cantire, Ebudes M. S. & N., Ross E. & W., Hebrides, Cork S., Waterford, Tipperary N., Kilkenny, Carlow, Queen's Co., Wexford, Kildare, Meath, Limerick, Clare, King's Co., Longford, Roscommon, Mayo E., Monaghan, Armagh, and Tyrone. We shall be especially glad of specimens, or even the loan of specimens, from these counties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
