It examines the regulation, integration and functioning of biological processes under various environmental conditions. The study of animal physiology is closely linked with anatomy. The study of the size, structure and shape of animals falls under the field of morphology. It is the study of the biological form and arrangement of the organs of the animals. It generally focuses on the bones, muscles, nerves and blood vessels which constitute the bodies of animals. The topics included in this book on animal physiology and morphology are of utmost significance and bound to provide incredible insights to readers. Those in search of information to further their knowledge will be greatly assisted by this book. Coherent flow of topics, student-friendly language and extensive use of examples make it an invaluable source of knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxygen uptake for metabolic energy demand and the elimination of the resulting carbon dioxide is one of the essential processes in all higher life forms; in the case of animals, everything from protozoans to insects and vertebrates including humans. Respiratory Biology of Animals provides a contemporary and truly integrative approach to the topic, adopting a strong evolutionary theme. It covers aerobic metabolism at all levels, from gas exchange organs such as skin, gills, and lungs to mitochondria - the site of cellular respiration. The book also describes the functional morphology and physiology of the circulatory system, which often contains gas-carrying pigments and is important for pH regulation in the organism. A final section describes the evolution of animal respiratory systems. Throughout the book, examples are selected from the entire breadth of the animal kingdom, identifying common themes that transcend taxonomy. Respiratory Biology of Animals is an accessible supplementary text suitable for both senior undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in respiratory biology, comparative animal physiology, and environmental physiology. It is also of relevance and use to the many professional academics requiring a concise but authoritative overview of the topic.

This occurs in the water. The ova burst out from the ovaries, are taken up by the ciliated funnels of the oviducts, and pass down those structures to the uteri, receiving on their way gelatinous investments. Here they are aggregated into " clumps," and expelled by the contraction of the muscle in the uterine and cloacal walls. As they are extruded from the body, sperms are shed Over them by the male. Fertilization occurs in the usual way by fusion of a sperm with each ovum. 8. Muscular System.--In a tadpole there are lateral muscles divided into myomeres, as in a fish, but only traces of this segmentation are to be found in the adult. The muscles are very numerous, and have a very complicated arrangement. The following table will give a rough notion of their classification (after Huxley): --A, Muscles of Head Episkeletal, superficial to the endoskeleton. and Trunk, Hyposkeletal, within the endoskeleton. Intrinsic, taking origin in the limbs themselves B. Muscles of Limbs. (including girdles). Extrinsic, taking origin outside the limbs. The firm endoskeleton affords points of attachment, and this is often effected by the intermediation of cordlike tendons, almost entirely made up of white connective-tissue fibres. The firm sheaths, aponeuroses, by which muscles are covered, may also serve for the attachment of other muscles. This is best seen in flat muscles, such as some of those forming the abdominal wall. The muscles are made up of bundles of transversely striated fibres, each of which is invested by a delicate sarcolemma, and contains numerous muscle-c0rpuscles--i.e., nuclei surrounded by small quantities of protoplasm. These fibres also exhibit longitudinal striations. From a physiological point of view the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Form and Function" by E. S. Russell is a seminal work in the field of biology that explores the fundamental relationship between the structure (form) and the purpose (function) of organisms. This significant literature has had a long-lasting impact on morphology and physiological research. Russell's research digs on the complex interplay of an organism's morphological traits and biological functions. He emphasizes the significance of understanding how the structure of an organism evolved to fulfill particular functions in its surroundings. Russell's method is broad, encompassing many parts of biology such as anatomy, biomechanics, and adaptability. One of the key themes of "Form and Function" is the concept of adaptation, which outlines the ways organisms have developed over time to maximize their forms for survival and reproduction in different environments. Russell uses numerous examples from the animal and plant kingdoms to demonstrate how various structures and functions have coevolved in response to selective pressures. By emphasizing the need of evaluating both form and function whereas studying organisms, E. S. Russell's work has left an indelible mark. It is a foundational classic for biologists and continues to stimulate study in ecology, evolution, and physiology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask anyone who has owned a pet and they’ll assure you that, yes, animals have personalities. And science is beginning to agree. Researchers have demonstrated that both domesticated and nondomesticated animals—from invertebrates to monkeys and apes—behave in consistently different ways, meeting the criteria for what many define as personality. But why the differences, and how are personalities shaped by genes and environment? How did they evolve? The essays in Animal Personalities reveal that there is much to learn from our furred and feathered friends. The study of animal personality is one of the fastest-growing areas of research in behavioral and evolutionary biology. Here Claudio Carere and Dario Maestripieri, along with a host of scholars from fields as diverse as ecology, genetics, endocrinology, neuroscience, and psychology, provide a comprehensive overview of the current research on animal personality. Grouped into thematic sections, chapters approach the topic with empirical and theoretical material and show that to fully understand why personality exists, we must consider the evolutionary processes that give rise to personality, the ecological correlates of personality differences, and the physiological mechanisms underlying personality variation.

This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild animals under human care as well as domesticated farm production animals are often exposed to environmental changes (e.g., capture and transportation). Short-term or acute changes in physiological indices (e.g., heart rate, respiration, body temperatures, immune cells, and stress hormonal biomarkers) provide crucial information regarding the responses of animals to novel environments, and they could provide crucial determining factors for the long-term health and welfare of animals. This Special Issue includes experimental research papers that demonstrate the applications of physiological indices and welfare assessment methods (e.g., morphological and morphometric data, behavioural assessments, thermal profiles, and physiological markers) in any wildlife or production animal (e.g., rescued and rehabilitating animals, pets, competition animals, farm animals, and zoo animals), in response to environmental and management related factors. The goal is to provide examples of new research and techniques that can be used to monitor short- and long-term environmental adaptation of animals under human care.
