Book excerpt: Including Hebrew texts, translated by Gustav Dalman and translated into English from the German by A W Streane. Gustaf Hermann Dalman (9 June 1855 - 19 August 1941) was a German Lutheran theologian and orientalist. He did extensive field work in Palestine before the First World War, collecting inscriptions, poetry, and proverbs. He also collected physical articles illustrating the life of the indigenous farmers and herders of the country, including rock and plant samples, house and farm tools, small archaeological finds, and ceramics. He pioneered the study of biblical and early post-biblical Aramaic, publishing an authoritative grammar (1894) and dictionary (1901), as well as other works. His collection of 15,000 historic photographs and 5,000 books, including rare 16th century prints, and maps formed the basis of the Gustaf Dalman Institute at Ernst Moritz Arndt Universität, Greifswald, which commemorates and continues his work. Dalman served as one of the early directors of the Deutsche Evangelische Institut für Altertumswissenschaft des heiligen Landes zu Jerusalem (German Evangelical Institute for Ancient Studies of the Holy Land in Jerusalem).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paula Fredriksen, renowned historian and author of From Christ to Jesus, begins this inquiry into the historic Jesus with a fact that may be the only undisputed thing we know about him: his crucifixion. Rome reserved this means of execution particularly for political insurrectionists; and the Roman charge posted at the head of the cross indicted Jesus for claiming to be King of the Jews. To reconstruct the Jesus who provoked this punishment, Fredriksen takes us into the religious worlds, Jewish and pagan, of Mediterranean antiquity, through the labyrinth of Galilean and Judean politics, and on into the ancient narratives of Paul's letters, the gospels, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Josephus' histories. The result is a profound contribution both to our understanding of the social and religious contexts within which Jesus of Nazareth moved, and to our appreciation of the mission and message that ended in the proclamation of Jesus as Messiah.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trial of Jesus: From Jewish Sources Many of my readers are doubtless familiar with the fact that there are traditions current in Jewish history concerning the life and death of Jesus which differ somewhat from those handed down by the Christian Church. What will probably surprise them is the statement that, though these traditions do differ from the nar ratives of the New Testament, they do not in the least oppose or contradict, but, on the contrary, rather confirm and corroborate the accounts of the Apostles. In many cases these traditions throw new light on the events; show the true na ture and the undisclosed plans of the principal men of those days. They reveal to us the true character of those who played an important part in the great drama enacted at Jerusalem nineteen hundred years ago. They raise the curtain of obscurity from the stage of those days, and pre sent to our gaze adistinct and clear picture of the happenings at that epoch-making period. These Jewish traditions rather supplement the account of the Bible, and, if placed side by side with the gospel account, would give a new interpretation to those great events. The two explain each other, the one supplying what was omitted by the other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Witnesses That Jesus Is the Christ Indeed, to be truly consistent, we should give no instruction at all; since all instruction, in so far as it is received, gives a decided bias to the mind. If a man believes his religion to be true, it is the thing of all others which he is bound to enforce on the mind of his pupil; if he does not believe the religion he professes to be true, then, certainly, he had better leave religious instruction to be communicated by some one else. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's View of the Kingdom of God: A Study in Jewish Apocalyptic and in the Mind of Jesus Christ; Bruce Lectures The following pages incorporate a series of Bruce Lectures given in the Theological College of the United Free Church, Glasgow, in 1914. Various circumstances have delayed their preparation for publication, and in. The form in which they now appear almost nothing remains of the original lectures except the argument. It is hoped, however, that by this delay and revision the argument has gained in clearness and in force, especially as it has been possible to relate it in some degree to events and aspirations of the present time. The book is issued in the hope that it may be of service to students of the Gospels, for whom the Eschatological Question still constitutes the gateway to all higher and fuller historical understanding of these precious documents. The writer is indebted to many, both teachers and friends, who have helped him, above all to the revered and beloved teacher, at Whose suggestion the task of preparing these lectures was first undertaken. What he owed to Dr. James Denney for counsel and encouragementfhefcan, however, never adequately tell. The literary references are given in the foot notes. In the preparation of the book for the press the writer has been greatly assisted by Prof. John E. Mcfadyen, and he is specially indebted to Prof. H. R. Mackintosh for his kindness in contributing the Introductory Note. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This work takes up two related questions with regard to Jesus: his intention and his relationship to his contemporaries in Judaism. These questions immediately lead to two others: the reason for his death (did his intention involve an opposition to Judaism which led to death?) and the motivating force behind the rise of Christianity (did the split between the Christian movement and Judaism originate in opposition during Jesus' lifetime?).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Jesus: A Review of His Life, Character, and Death, From a Jewish Standpoint, Addressed to Members of the Theistic Church In submitting the following work to your kind consideration and friendly criticism, it may be well to report myself briefly, or let you know what I am doing here, and neglecting to do for the advancement of the religious reformation which we have so much at heart. During the eleven years that I have been perched on this hill overlooking the ancient city which witnessed the introduction of monk-worship by St. Augustine, I have endeavoured to instruct in a humble way, and to a very limited extent, two classes of people - the Christian population of the country, and those who, like ourselves and the Jews, are compelled by conscience to stand outside the pale of Christianity.
