Book excerpt: "The Jew and American Ideals" is a book written by John Spargo, a prominent American socialist, educator, and author. Published in 1921, the book delves into the relationship between Jewish identity and American values, particularly in the context of the United States' historical treatment of Jewish immigrants and citizens. Spargo explores various aspects of Jewish history, culture, and contributions to American society, aiming to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about the Jewish people. He highlights the struggles and achievements of Jewish immigrants in the United States, emphasizing their role in shaping the country's cultural, economic, and political landscape. One of the central themes of the book is the idea of American ideals as embodied in the nation's founding principles of liberty, equality, and justice for all. Spargo argues that these ideals are inherently inclusive and compatible with the Jewish experience, despite historical instances of discrimination and prejudice. Throughout the book, Spargo examines the ways in which Jewish Americans have embraced and embodied American values, contributing to the country's cultural diversity and democratic spirit. He celebrates Jewish achievements in various fields, including business, politics, academia, and the arts, while also acknowledging the challenges and obstacles they have faced along the way. In addition to highlighting the positive contributions of Jewish Americans, Spargo also addresses issues of anti-Semitism and discrimination, both historically and in contemporary society. He calls for greater awareness and understanding of Jewish identity and history, advocating for tolerance, empathy, and solidarity among all Americans. Overall, "The Jew and American Ideals" serves as a testament to the rich and complex relationship between Jewish identity and American values. Spargo's thoughtful analysis and advocacy for inclusivity and social justice make the book a significant contribution to the ongoing conversation about diversity and multiculturalism in the United States.

Book excerpt: Argues that antisemitism contradicts American ideals. In this spirit, criticizes the antisemitic propaganda of Henry Ford's "Dearborn Independent" and its presentation of the "Protocols" as genuine. Refutes the latter's claims about the existence of a Jewish conspiracy, the preeminence of Jews in the history of socialism, and the charges that the Bolsheviks are all Jews and all Jews are Bolsheviks. Compares Henry Ford not only to British antisemites but also to the notorious Krushevan, whose "Bessarabets" newspaper played a role in causing the Kishinev pogrom. Notes that the U.S. is not immune to racism and that Christians and Jews should cooperate to fight antisemitism.

Book excerpt: Although frequently recognized as home to well-known personalities, Great Neck is also notable for the conspicuous way it transformed itself from a Gentile community, to a mixed one, and, finally, in the 1960s, to one in which Jews were the majority. In Inventing Great Neck, Judith S. Goldstein recounts these histories in which Great Neck emerges as a leader in the reconfiguration of the American suburb. The book spans four decades of rapid change, beginning with the 1920s. First, the community served as a playground for New York's socialites and celebrities. In the forties, it developed one of the country's most outstanding school systems and served as the temporary home to the United Nations. In the sixties it provided strong support to the civil rights movement.

Book excerpt: From National Jewish Book Award Winner and author of Israel, a bold reevaluation of the tensions between American and Israeli Jews that reimagines the past, present, and future of Jewish life Relations between the American Jewish community and Israel are at an all-time nadir. Since Israel’s founding seventy years ago, particularly as memory of the Holocaust and of Israel’s early vulnerability has receded, the divide has grown only wider. Most explanations pin the blame on Israel’s handling of its conflict with the Palestinians, Israel’s attitude toward non-Orthodox Judaism, and Israel’s dismissive attitude toward American Jews in general. In short, the cause for the rupture is not what Israel is; it’s what Israel does. These explanations tell only half the story. We Stand Divided examines the history of the troubled relationship, showing that from the outset, the founders of what are now the world’s two largest Jewish communities were responding to different threats and opportunities, and had very different ideas of how to guarantee a Jewish future. With an even hand, Daniel Gordis takes us beyond the headlines and explains how Israel and America have fundamentally different ideas about issues ranging from democracy and history to religion and identity. He argues that as a first step to healing the breach, the two communities must acknowledge and discuss their profound differences and moral commitments. Only then can they forge a path forward, together.

Book excerpt: Jews in the United States are uniquely American in their connections to Jewish religion and ethnicity. Sylvia Barack Fishman in her groundbreaking book, Jewish Life and American Culture, shows that contemporary Jews have created a hybrid new form of Judaism, merging American values and behaviors with those from historical Jewish traditions. Fishman introduces a new concept called coalescence, an adaptation technique through which Jews merge American and Jewish elements. Analyzing the increasingly permeable boundaries in the ethnic identity construction of Jewish and non-Jewish Americans, she suggests that during the process of coalescence, Jews combine the texts of American and Jewish cultures, losing track of their dissonance and perceiving them as a unified Jewish whole. The author generates data from diverse sources in the social sciences and humanities, including the 1990 National Jewish Population Survey and other statistical studies, interviews and focus groups, popular and material culture, literature and film, to demonstrate the pervasiveness of coalescence. The book pays special attention to gender issues and the relationship of women to their Jewish and American identities. A blend of lively narrative and scholarly detail, this book includes useful tables, accessible figures and models, and fascinating illustrations which present the educational, occupational, and behavioral patterns of American Jews, organizational profiles, family formation, religious observance, and the impact of Jewish education.

Book excerpt: How did Judaism, a religion so often defined by its minority status, attain equal footing in the trinity of Catholicism, Protestantism, and Judaism that now dominates modern American religious life? THE AMERICANIZATION OF THE JEWS seeks out the effects of this evolution on both Jews in America and an America with Jews. Although English, French, and Dutch Jewries are usually considered the principal forerunners of modern Jewry, Jews have lived as long in North America as they have in post- medieval Britain and France and only sixty years less than in Amsterdam. As one of the four especially creative Jewish communities that has helped re-shape and re-formulate modern Judaism, American Judaism is the most complex and least understood. German Jewry is recognized for its contribution to modern Jewish theology and philosophy, Russian and Polish Jewry is known for its secular influence in literature, and Israel clearly offers Judaism a new stance as a homeland. But how does one capture the interplay between America and Judaism? Immigration to America meant that much of Judaism was discarded, and much was retained. Acculturation did not always lead to assimilation: Jewishness was honed as an independent variable in the motivations of many of its American adherents- -and has remained so, even though Jewish institutions, ideologies, and even Jewish values have been reshaped by America to such an degree that many Jews of the past might not recognize as Jewish some of what constitutes American Jewishness. This collection of essays explores the paradoxes that abound in the America/Judaism relationship, focusing on such specific issues as Jews and American politics in the twentieth century, the adaptation of Jewish religious life to the American environment, the contributions and impact of the women's movement, and commentaries on the Jewish future in America.

Book excerpt: The first great modern migration of the Jewish people, from the Old World to America, has been often and expertly chronicled, but until now the second great wave of Jewish migration has been overlooked. After World War II, spurred by a postwar economic boom, American Jews sought new beginnings in the nation's South and West. There, they shaped a new, postwar style of American Judaism for the second half of the twentieth century. Today these sun-soaked, entrepreneurial communities contribute greatly to the American Jewish landscape. In this book, the vibrant Jewish culture of Los Angeles and Miami comes to life through Moore's skillful weaving of individual voices, dreams, and accomplishments.
