Book excerpt: Experience the desert with Christ as you read what might have been His thoughts, ideas and feelings during His forty days in the wilderness. The Jesus Diaries will make you stop and think-you will be challenged to consider what really happened during those days of testing. You will begin to wonder what Jesus felt, how He ached, what He encountered and how He survived. And, as you ponder on the actual happenings of those unknown events, maybe you will begin to connect to the holy humanness of God. Maybe, for the first time ever, you will truly understand that God became man so that we could know Him. Maybe The Jesus Diaries will be an instrument of hope for you during the days when you are tested; knowing that a Greater One has gone before you. Book excerpt: Carolina Maria de Jesus' book, Quarto de Despejo (The Trash Room), depicted the harsh life of the slums, but it also spoke of the author's pride in her blackness, her high moral standards, and her patriotism. More than a million copies of her diary are believed to have been sold worldwide. Yet many Brazilians refused to believe that someone like de Jesus could have written such a diary, with its complicated words (some of them misused) and often lyrical phrasing as she discussed world events. Doubters prefer to believe the book was either written by Audáulio Dantas, the enterprising newspaper reporter who discovered her, or that Dantas rewrote it so substantially that her book is a fraud. With the cooperation of de Jesus' daughter, recent research shows that although Dantas deleted considerable portions of the diary (as well as a second one), every word was de Jesus'. But Dantas did "create" a different Carolina from the woman who coped with her harsh life by putting things down on paper. This book sets the record straight by providing detailed translations of de Jesus' unedited diaries and explains why Brazilian elites were motivated to obscure her true personality and present her as something she was not. It is not only about the writer but about Brazil as recorded by her sarcastic pen. The diary entries in this book span from 1958 to 1966, five years beyond text previously known to exist. They show de Jesus as she was, preserving her Joycean stream-of-consciousness language and her pithy characterizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine what it would be like if you had the opportunity to sit down with Jesus and ask him about his life. What fresh insights would you glean as he reveals the intimate details of his personal life? In THE JESUS DIARIES, Jesus himself shares his perspective on the events which made him world-famous in an easy-to-read conversational style. * He anchors his life in the politically tense, yet exciting days of the first century. * He explains the amazing events that lead up to his birth, and the intrigue that follows him throughout his life. * He gives us insights into the deep meaning of his words and illustrates how his teachings are firmly rooted in the Hebrew Old Testament. * He walks us through the moving events of his life as seen through his eyes. * He introduces us to people in desperate need, whose lives are miraculously changed forever, leaving us breathlessly expectant to see what will happen next. THE JESUS DIARIES is based directly on the four Gospels in the New Testament. Like a detective, Helen Hunter exercises her theological training and her background as a translator to meticulously piece together the events of Jesus' life, and to answer so many of the questions left unanswered in the Gospels. A unique feature is Jesus' own account of hundreds of Old Testament prophecies that are linked to his life and teachings. This, together with the rich historical and geographical descriptions, give you the feeling that you are right there in his world, experiencing it all with him. THE JESUS DIARIES is ideally suited to introduce adults and young people to the real Jesus in language they can understand. Because of its accuracy and rock-solid scriptural foundation, the book can be used with confidence in schools, churches and colleges, as well as to introduce people of all cultural backgrounds to the founder of Christianity. WHAT READERS ARE SAYING: "I was taken aback. It's straightforward, gripping, very, very strong." "An easy read. I fell in love with him all over again." "Cool! I'm awestruck. Powerfully written. Very touching." "I feel like I'm there." "A transformational experience." "It's full of 'aha' moments. I want everyone I know to read it."

Book excerpt: Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ met face-to-face with people just like you. Broken, imperfect, sometimes fearful and without hope. The Day I Met Jesus is a beautifully crafted narrative that chronicles the remarkable encounters of five women in the Gospels who were desperate to find wholeness, security, and purpose. Like all of us, these women struggled with the regrets of their pasts, the stresses of their presents, and the worries of their tomorrows. Join Frank Viola and Mary DeMuth on a fascinating journey back in time as they retell the dramatic accounts of five women who met Jesus. Each narrative is told from each woman's unique perspective, yet tightly grounded in the Gospel accounts and faithful to first-century history. Elegantly written and profoundly stirring, this book blends creative narrative with uncommon insight, spiritual depth, and practical application. If you are someone who seeks a renewal of hope, faith, and love, The Day I Met Jesus will make your Bible come to life and usher you into a fresh encounter with your Lord.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible in Matthew and Luke briefly relates how Mary became pregnant with Jesus, how Joseph took her as his wife and then how Jesus got lost in the Temple at age twelve. A few short pages spans the time from before his birth to age twelve, but is there more? The Early Church Fathers thought so. Saint Jerome, Saint Athanasius, Saint Augustine and others gave sermons to their flocks on details left out of Scripture. These stories have been mostly lost to the modern Christian but now are brought to life in The Diaries of Joseph and Mary. Nothing in the Bible about the Nativity is changed, nothing about who Jesus is is changed. Rather the ancient theologians proffered insights surrounding these events and filled in gaps. The Diaries of Joseph and Mary presents the beliefs of the Early Church Fathers on the Nativity in the form of a diary that Joseph and Mary may have kept. It illuminates the events and answers questions like, "Where was Joseph when Mary visited Elizabeth?" In addition the book offers an appendix, 101 Questions and Answers About Saint Joseph that provides the reader with additional details. The questions delve deeper into who Joesph was, indeed who he had to be as the man chosen by God the Father to be the foster-father of His Son on Earth. The reader of this book will find in Joseph a man who all men should try to emulate no matter their vocation in life. Together the Diary of Joseph and Mary and 101 Questions and Answers About Saint Joseph provide a wonderful way to enter more deeply into the message of the Advent and Christmas season. Writing this book my faith has been deepened. My celebration of the Advent and Christmas seasons are more vibrant and alive for me. my hope is that you, the reader, have the same experience.

Book excerpt: As the hours passed, I began to grow delirious from the pain. I have been told that I said many times to forgive them, for they know not what they do. When it grew late in the afternoon, I knew I would not remain conscious much longer, at least I desperately hoped I would not, but I knew there was one last thing I must do. One of the Psalms which has always enchanted me, which has always driven me on and given me strength was the one which began "My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?" It rends the soul with its description of the forsaken anointed one. It truly describes the torment which I experienced, better than I could ever express myself. Yet, even in the depths of his agony, the psalm foresees that the anointed one's faith remains firm and even turns to joy. Even at death's door, he glorifies the Lord in his might and his justice. I knew I had to recite this psalm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "He was one of distinguished natural abilities, as all are sensible who had acquaintance with him. As a minister of the gospel, he was called to unusual services in that work; and his ministry was attended by very remarkable and unusual events ... He had a peculiar opportunity of acquaintance with the false appearances and counterfeits of religion; was the instrument of a most remarkable awakening ...In the following account, the reader will have an opportunity to see not only what were the external circumstances and remarkable incidents of the life of this person, and how he spent his time from day to day, as to his external behavior; but also what passed in his own heart." --Jonathan Edwards David Brainerd, an early missionary to the American Indians in New York, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania, died in 1747 at the age of twenty-nine at the home of his long-time friend and supporter, the eminent Puritan theologian and preacher Jonathan Edwards. It is thanks to Edwards' careful preservation and thoughtful editing of his friend's Diary and Journal that Brainerd has influenced Christians all over the world for over 250 years. As he labored in what was still the untamed American frontier to bring the Gospel to the Indians, Brainerd faced many challenges, including depression, loneliness, and physical illness. Yet his genuine piety and single-minded devotion to God, both in heart and in practice, form a consistent backdrop to his turbulent inner world. This compilation offers a rare glimpse into the life of a man compelled by God to share His love with others in the most difficult of circumstances.
