Book excerpt: Romance, suspense, and adventure explode in the steamy Mexican jungle. A secretive archaeologist guards his discovery, the ruins of a hidden Olmec city, while a driven journalist on the trail of an ancient Olmec curse experiences flashbacks to her past life where shapeshifting is a reality. A journalist determined to unveil the truth ... Journalist Charley Underhill barges in on a Mexican archaeological dig, bent on sifting rumors from truth about several unexplained deaths in the remote region. She has serious doubt it was an ancient curse that killed the men. If it means keeping a watchful eye peeled for hairy, hungry predators or lying to the no-good womanizing archaeologist with a sexy Scottish accent, brilliant scientific mind, and penchant for gaudy Hawaiian shirts, so be it. Only the juiciest of exposes will fund her mother's life-saving treatment. An archaeologist hell-bent on preventing a premature press leak ... Uncovering the past is archaeologist Dr. Alistair Kincaid's purpose in life. Still smarting from a ruthless betrayal, he guards his latest discovery, an ancient Olmec city buried deep in the jungles of Oaxaca, in the hopes of making a dazzling comeback. He won't let a snoopy reporter, even one with a quirky sense of humor, smarts, and a heartwarming smile, destroy his last chance at success. Or steal his heart. Together, they uncover long-buried secrets best left untouched ... Strands from past lives intertwine with the present, drawing the couple deeper into a legacy of shifters and danger, romance and evil, reincarnation and karma. Torn between saving her mother's life and betraying the man she loves, Charley must make an impossible choice. 5 Stars: "An intricately woven tale of mystery, romance and the supernatural ..." 5 Stars: "Hilarious banter, scorching sexual tension, gripping suspense, mysticism-The Jaguar Legacy has it all! ..."

As a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse develops, a plot against the couple begins to stir. One that will have ramifications throughout Europe. . . Kauffmann takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the writings of one of Mexico’s early chroniclers, Fernando de Alva Ixtilxochitl, a bilingual seventeenth-century historian from Central Mexico. His writing, especially his portrayal of the great pre-Hispanic poet-king Nezahualcoyotl, influenced other canonical histories of Mexico and is still influential today. Many scholars who discuss Alva Ixtlilxochitl’s writing focus on his personal and literary investment in the European classical tradition, but Kauffmann argues that his work needs to be read through the lens of Nahua cultural concepts and literary-historical precepts. She suggests that he is best understood in light of his ancestral ties to Tetzcoco’s rulers and as a historian who worked within both Native and European traditions. By paying attention to his representation of rulership, Kauffmann demonstrates how the literary and symbolic worlds of the Nahua exist in allegorical but still discernible subtexts within the larger Spanish context of his writing.

Book excerpt: An exciting new technology, described by the one who inventedit This is the first book dedicated to cognitive radio, a promisingnew technology that is poised to revolutionize thetelecommunications industry with increased wireless flexibility.Cognitive radio technology integrates computational intelligenceinto software-defined radio for embedded intelligent agents thatadapt to RF environments and user needs. Using this technology, users can more fully exploit the radio spectrum and servicesavailable from wireless connectivity. For example, an attempt tosend a 10MB e-mail in a zone where carrier charges are high mightcause a cognitive radio to alert its user and suggest waiting untilgetting to the office to use the LAN instead. Cognitive RadioArchitecture examines an "ideal cognitive radio" that featuresautonomous machine learning, computer vision, and spoken or writtenlanguage perception. The author of this exciting new book is the inventor of thetechnology and a leader in the field. Following his step-by-stepintroduction, readers can start building aware/adaptive radios andthen make steps towards cognitive radio. After an introduction toadaptive, aware, and cognitive radio, the author develops threemajor themes in three sections: Foundations Radio Competence User Domain Competence The book makes the design principles of cognitive radio moreaccessible to students of teleinformatics, as well as to wirelesscommunications systems developers. It therefore embraces thepractice of cognitive radio as well as the theory. In particular, the publication develops a cognitive architecture that integratesdisparate disciplines, including autonomous machine learning, computer vision, and language perception technologies. Anaccompanying CD-ROM contains the Java source code and compiledclass files for applications developed in the book. In addition, for the convenience of the reader, Web resources introducing keyconcepts such as speech applications programmer interfaces (APIs)are included. Although still five to ten years away from full deployment, telecommunications giants and research labs around the world arealready dedicating R&D to this new technology.Telecommunications engineers as well as advanced undergraduate andgraduate students can learn the promising possibilities of thisinnovative technology from the one who invented it. Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials arenot included as part of eBook file.

Book excerpt: The author of Classic Car Gallery “covers the Jaguar and its various incarnations with lovingly snappy prose . . . to excite the passions of Jaguar-mania” (The Historical Miniatures Gaming Society). The third book in the new CarCraft series, Jaguar E-Type, frames the legend of what many call the world’s most beautiful car design. Sir William Lyons and Malcolm Sayer carved automotive history with this car across its 1960s-1970s incarnations from roadster to coupé amid the fitting of Straight-Six, to V12 engines. With its new definition of sculptural styling, performance, handling and innovative style, the E-Type or XKE series in the USA, created a car of global impact that remains a great classic of all time. Here, experienced automotive writer, and industrial designer, Lance Cole pays tribute to the car in a detailed yet engaging commentary. New photography, the design story, and full coverage of the modeling options in synthetic materials and die cast metals, create a narrative of vital interest. The aim of the innovative CarCraft series is to provide modelmakers and car enthusiasts with a new standard of primarily visual reference of both full-size cars and their scale models. Each book contains detailed technical information imparted through drawings and photographs while the meticulously researched full-color profiles provides a complete reference for paint schemes and markings. In addition, every volume of the CarCraft series features summaries of design histories and operational careers, and reviews of available kits. “This book will be of great interest to modelers planning on doing a Jaguar model and also to car enthusiasts.”—AMPS Indianapolis

Book excerpt: “A family account of the life of Tashunke Witko, their great Sioux relative . . . For the first time, the Clown family members tell their oral history.”—True West The Edward Clown family, nearest living relatives to the Lakota war leader, presents the family tales and memories told to them about their famous grandfather. In many ways the oral history differs from what has become the standard and widely accepted biography of Crazy Horse. The family clarifies the inaccuracies and shares their story about the past, including what it means to them to be Lakota, the family genealogy, the life of Crazy Horse and his motivations, his death, and why they chose to keep quiet with their knowledge for so long before finally deciding to tell the truth as they know it. This book is a compelling addition to the body of works about Crazy Horse and the complicated and often conflicting events of that time period in American History. “For the first time the first-hand account of Crazy Horse is told . . . The stories were faithfully passed down through the generations . . . It includes Crazy Horse’s account of the last moments of Custer and the near-killing of Maj. Marcus Reno by Crazy Horse’s father.”—Capital Journal “After many years of keeping quiet, the family of Lakota warrior Crazy Horse decided to tell their story of his life and legacy . . . The truth behind the history of Crazy Horse—an iconic Native American warrior—until recently has been kept hidden for more than a century.”—The Monroe News

Book excerpt: The contributors to this volume describe the many facets shamanism and depth psychology have in common: animal symbolism; recognition of the reality of the collective unconscious; and healing rituals that put therapist and patient in touch with transpersonal powers. By reintroducing the core of shamanism in contemporary form, these essays shape a powerful means of healing that combines the direct contact with the inner psyche one finds in shamanism with the self-reflection and critical awareness of modern consciousness. The contributors' draw from experiences both inside and outside the consulting room, and with cultures that include the Lakota Sioux, and those of the Peruvian Andes and the Hawaiian Islands. The focus is on those aspects of shamanism most useful and relevant to the modern practice of depth psychology. These explorations bring the young practice of analytical psychology into perspective as part of a much more ancient heritage of shamanistic healing.

Get ready to be swept away by a collection of fantastical stories that delve into the realm of animal vengeance like never before. In "Battles of the Beasts," we continue this tradition by weaving animal protagonists into the fabric of fantastical worlds, where they rise against their oppressors, harness their magic, and seek retribution for the wrongs inflicted upon them. The stories in this book are inspired by a wide array of creatures from mythology and folklore, from majestic dragons to wise phoenixes, from cunning werewolves to graceful unicorns. These creatures come alive with vivid personalities, magical abilities, and unyielding determination as they navigate the challenges and perils of their fantastical realms, seeking to right the wrongs done to them and their kind. Through their tales, we explore the depths of their emotions, the complexities of their worlds, and their unwavering pursuit of vengeance. "Battles of the Beasts" is not just a collection of stories about animals seeking revenge in a fantasy world; it is a reflection on the power of imagination, the importance of empathy, and the timeless human desire for justice. It invites us to ponder the meaning of power, the consequences of oppression, and the morality of revenge. It challenges us to question societal norms, to examine our biases and assumptions, and to explore the complexities of good and evil. It ignites our imaginations and transports us to worlds where animals are not just passive characters, but active agents shaping their destinies. As the author of these tales, I have drawn upon my love for fantasy literature, my fascination with myth and folklore, and my admiration for animals to create these stories. I have been inspired by the rich tapestry of fantasy worlds, the diversity of creatures that populate them, and the limitless possibilities of the genre. I have also been moved by the timeless themes of justice, equality, and the plight of the oppressed, which are just as relevant in the fantastical realms as they are in our world. Through these stories, I hope to transport readers to worlds where the fantastical and the natural collide, where animals are not just passive entities, but active participants in shaping their destinies.
