Book excerpt: True Grip-Lit To Keep You In Suspense When Kirsty Cartwright takes herself off to France to lick her wounds, it's partly out of shame over her father's actions and partly out of shame over her own, for her betrayal of her fianc. Then she hears that her father has been seriously injured in an accident. Forced to come home and face her demons - and her ex-fianc - she soon begins to suspect there is more to her father's accident than meets the eye. Driven by the need to make amends, she resolves to unravel the truth - but the deeper she digs, the more her own life becomes embroiled in the dangerous forces she is unleashing. Things start to spiral out of control until her very survival is under threat. Can she even trust the ones she loves?DS Harry Briscombe is back, and facing a personal dilemma that threatens his career. Already investigating a local murder, Dominic Cartwright's accident raises the possibility that the two cases could be linked. Between the two of them, Harry and Kirsty get caught up in a trail that is increasingly perilous. It's becoming a race against time ... and time is running out.- If you love Clare Mackintosh and Rachel Abbott, you'll love this book Questions to the Author How did the plot idea come to you?- In drabs and drabs - it was very irritating! I started off with just an idea in my head of a character meeting up with her estranged father because of some secret he was going to tell her, but I didn't know what that secret was. I wrote that whole scene and a couple of others before I ditched it. The current theme (no spoilers) was as a result of a real case that I heard on the radio and I just thought how easily every day people can get caught up in that sort of thing, tempted by the money. The various sub-plots along the way are themes that interest me - and I think everyone has views on them one way or another. The title The Jagged Line is more about the fine line we draw between truth and the stretching of it; between morality and immorality ... and how easy it is to cross those lines.Harry's got a new side-kick in Beth. Will you continue their stories on?Definitely! Beth has a very interesting back-story to develop, which was hinted at in The Jagged Line. It will come into its own in my new novel (yet to be named!). We already know that she comes from a tough background but even she will be surprised at what comes out!And now for the Big question ... when will your 4th novel be published? That really is the big question! I've literally only just started it, so it depends how quickly I can get it done. At the moment I'm struggling with the finer details of the plot, which is slowing things up a bit, but I'm sure I'll get it sorted and I'm hoping that it will be out in the next 6-9 months. Book excerpt: The former Campbell County seat, Campbellton, Georgia, has long ago given way to Fairburn, along the Atlanta and West Point Railroad. Heather Duncan is the adopted daughter of Sonny Duncan, a notorious tracker who trained her to handle the dogs well at a very young age. If the Duncans were on your trail, you were destined for capture. In the final years of Campbell County, Heather worked as a bookkeeper for Sheriff Benjamin Giles. He traded her off to another department as a joke. They were expecting a man, not a female sworn deputy. Heather handled a car better than most men, and could outshoot many. Join Heather as she carves her name on the list of Law Enforcement officers, taking on the hunt for a murderer in and around Meriwether County, Georgia during the Great Depression.

Book excerpt: The World War II fighter-pilot story On the very first day of the invasion of Sicily, three months into his combat career, Allan Knepper flew his P-38 Lightning fighter in a squadron sent out to sweep the island and interdict German ground targets. Retreating German infantry unexpectedly pounded the American flyers. Knepper was one of two shot down; he was never found. Knepper’s story is the story-in-microcosm of thousands of American fighter pilots in World War II. Richardson recounts Knepper’s experiences from training through combat and uses them to discuss the aircraft, tactics and doctrine, training, base life, and aerial combat of the war. This is the intimate account of one pilot at war, but also the anatomy of the fighter-pilot experience in World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Perfection of Freedom seeks to respond to the impoverished conventional notion of freedom through a recovery of an understanding rich with possibilities yet all but forgotten in contemporary thought. This understanding, developed in different but complementary ways in the German thinkers Schiller, Schelling, and Hegel, connects freedom, not exclusively with power and possibility, but rather most fundamentally with completion, wholeness, and actuality. What is unique here is specifically the interpretation of freedom in terms of form, whether it be aesthetic form (Schiller), organic form (Schelling), or social form (Hegel). Although this book presents serious criticisms of the three philosophers, it shows that they open up new avenues for reflection on the notion of freedom; avenues that promise to overcome many of the dichotomies that continue to haunt contemporary thought--for example, between freedom and order, freedom and nature, and self and other. The Perfection of Freedom offers not only a significantly new interpretation of Schiller, Schelling, and Hegel, it also proposes a modernity more organically rooted in the ancient and classical Christian worlds.

Book excerpt: Motivation provides an accessible introduction to motivation and emotion, combining classic studies with current research and uses numerous real-world examples to engage the student and make, often difficult, theoretical concepts come to life. By understanding and applying the principles of motivation described in the text, students will not only discover insights into what motivates their own behavior but also how to instigate self-change through goal-setting. Throughout the book the author adopts an evolutionary approach to explore the effect of interpersonal relationships, food preferences, fear, music, and the emotions on motivation, at the same time considering how personality traits and psychological needs are essential for understanding why people are motivated by different things. The motivation of compulsive behavior from addictions, such as drugs, gambling, Internet gaming, and obsessive exercise is also considered, providing a truly comprehensive overview of biological, psychological, and environmental sources of motivation. The sixth edition has been thoroughly updated throughout and is accompanied by an instructor’s manual that contains multiple choice questions, essay questions with answers, websites related to motivation and emotion, power point slides, in-class activities, and discussion questions. It is an essential read for all students of motivation.

Book excerpt: Susan's life was beyond broken, it was over. There was nothing left but a hollowed out empty spot she used to call her family. Dick, her husband, left and her beloved son Declan was in jail. All she'd ever wanted was to have a happy family. What happened? Where did she go wrong? Her days were spent consumed in misery, wondering. Restless in spirit, bitter and resentful, the ache became unbearable. Her only relief came in the form of a tiny little tablet. Miranda met the love of her life. Declan. He was gorgeous, sweet, and charming. His smile lit up the room and stole her heart. He was the best thing to ever happen to her. Trouble was - he was also the worst. Without him she was halved, with him, she might end up in jail. On the verge of bankruptcy and being fired, Miranda wonders if she'll ever be able to tell the truth again. Declan stared up at the ceiling thinking. He needed more dope and soon. The prison bars he was trapped behind closed with a final clang. The sound reverberated through his jaw and down his back. It echoed down the miles of endless hallways. His bowels quivered and nausea churned. Yup, he was going to need something fast. He counted the hours trying to calculate how long before he'd be writhing on the floor. Six, at the most, but he could already feel it begin. Lyndsey, who never believed in fairy tales, pinched herself. She couldn't have dreamed this big. Her life in recovery was more than one she'd ever dared to hope for. When you've been on the verge of death, and live to tell about it, life could be so very sweet. No longer hopeless or living in despair, Lyndsey makes it her life's purpose to help others. But will they listen to her?
