Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy and the Italians To-night, under a nearly full moon, the peasants are practising their dances and songs for to-morrow's feast - the feast of St Sebastian. I am brought from the fireside about ten o'clock out under the stars, to listen to them. The sky is very clear, and the moon rides easily, like a pale lady on horseback, among the stars, that seem incomparably far away. The plaintive, poignant sweetness of the mandolins floating away from me out across the silver levels of water, throbs almost bitterly it seems to me, as I lean over the verandah listening. Just at the bottom of my garden, but on higher ground, - on a kind of a promontory, in fact, that juts out into the sea, - is the cemetery, full of tall calm cypresses that look jet black against the paleness of the sky. Far away, somewhere deep down in the valley, a bugle calls, and as the notes gallop towards me, a curious emotion sweeps through my blood, and I feel the splendours of the pageants and of all the royalty of the emperors and kings that are no more. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italians in America The New Americans Series consists of studies of the following racial groups, together with a study of the Eastern Orthodox Churches: Albanian and Bulgarian, Armenian and Assyrian-Chaldean, Czecho-Slovak, Greek, Italian, Jewish, Jugo-Slav (Croatian, Servian, Slovenian), Magyar, Polish, Russian and Ruthenian, or Ukrainian, Spanish (Spaniards) and Portuguese, Syrian. These studies, made under the auspices of the Interchurch World Movement were undertaken to show, in brief outline, the social, economic and religious background, European or Asiatic, of each group and to present the experience - social, economic and religious - of the particular group in America, with special reference to the contact of the given people with religious institutions in America. It was designed that the studies should be sympathetic but critical. It is confidently believed that this series will help America to appreciate and appropriate the spiritual wealth represented by the vast body of New Americans, each group having its own peculiar heritage and potentialities; and will lead Christian America, so far as she will read them, to become a better lover of mankind. The writer, in each case, is a kinsman or has had direct and intimate relationship with the people, or group of peoples, presented. First hand knowledge and the ability to study and write from a deeply sympathetic and broadly Christian viewpoint were primary conditions in the selection of the authors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social and Religious Life of Italians in America Several years ago a great publishing house desired to get a German book translated into English. The first writer to whom this commission was given was found to know German well, but English not so well. A second writer was found to be better acquainted with English than he was with German. It was not until after a good deal of searching that the happy discovery was made of a man who could both read German and write English excellently. A like discovery appears in the pages of this book. Mr. Sartorio knows the Italian people by nature and by long and intimate acquaintance, and he knows the American people by wise observation and by the fortunate experience of illuminating friendships. Thus he stands in a position which fits him for the important work of interpretation. Our present national situation brings into strong light the unwelcome fact that we have great numbers of neighbors who are not even hyphenated Americans. They are not Americans at all, except by the accident of residence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But we believed it to be better to give a general View of Italian life within a readable compass, rather than overburden the book with details, which would only interest the specialist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cart of Many Colors a Story of Italy Signs over the little shops would be written in Italian words; and all the babies would have dark Italian eyes and Shy Italian smiles; and all the people in the street would talk and laugh and sing in Italian; and out of all the doorways would come the smell of Italian cooking. And sometimes, at night, the whole street would be decked and garlanded with little electric lights, red and white and green, to celebrate the birth day Of the Italian saint who used to be the guardian spirit of the old Village in Italy, and who of course had emigrated with his villagers when they came to the new world. The Italians are not the only people who get together in groups and colonies in Our Amer ican cities. The Poles, the Russian Jews, the Germans, the Chinese, all the lonely new immi grants do it. They feel strange and far away from their own lands in this new country, and they want to live next door to some one who understands their language and their Old life. But thoughtful Americans are beginning to see that these little patches of Poland, Germany, Italy, are almost as far from America as if they were still on the other Side of the ocean. Daily messages, by cable and wireless, flash between Italy and America, but between Little Italy and Riverside Drive, in New York, there is no wire less; Mars and the Earth are not more far apart in some ways. It is to help Old Ameri cans and new Americans to get together and understand each other that little books like this one are written, - old Americans whose grand parents were born here, and new Americans whose children will be born here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Literary Source-Book of the Italian Renaissance Secondly, seeing that these two kinds of rule are to guide men to certain ends, as we shall see, it follows that if man had remained in the state of innocence in which God created him, he would not have needed such means of guidance. These kinds of rule, then, are remedies against the weakness of sin. Since, then, man was not a sinner on the fourth day, for he did not then even exist, it would have been idle to make remedies for his sin, and this would be contrary to the goodness of God. For he would be a sorry physician who would make a plaster for an abscess which was to be, before the man was born. It cannot, therefore, be said that God made these two kinds of rule on the fourth day, and there fore the meaning of Moses cannot have been what these men pretend. They have loved her alike in the golden days of the Renaissance and in the sad though glorious days of the Risorgimento; they have revered her artists and her exiled patriots, but they have too often loved her without under standing her. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Italian Love Stories But notwithstanding all that is lost in the re-telling, in a different language and at a different day, something remains, independent of both the old life and the old language, which the past has and can bestow even upon the unlettered readers of an alien country and an alien time, and that is the stories themselves, apart from their treatment and expression. Even retold their charm cannot, we are fain to hope, wholly evaporate. It is at all events possible to convey in some measure, by a simple recital of their contents, some idea of the positive genius for the picturesque in incident, episode, and surroundings, characteristic of the school to which they belong; of the blind intensity with which a single passion is painted, dominating and determining the living and dying of men and women of bygone generations; of the simple and undeviating directness of aim, good or evil, upon which the plots are constructed with such excellence of art that they seem a mere accident of instinct.
