Book excerpt: The wars fought between the Arab nations and the Israel have drawn the attention of military analysts for nearly five decades. Tactical warfare as well as performance of modern weapons have been of particular interest. Since the Israel was created in 1948, the weaponry on both Israeli and Arab sides has grown in quantity and sophistication, and tactical doctrine on both sides has evolved as well. The lessons to be learned from Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon point more particularly, however, to politics, not military tactics or modern arms. Chapters include: Clausewitz and the philosophy of war and politics. Bibliography. Maps and tables.

Download or read book The War on Lebanon written by Nubar Hovsepian and published by Interlink Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel's 34-day bombardment of Lebanon in the summer of 2006 demands international attention not only for its tragic results-the death of over 1,000 Lebanese civilians and the devastation of Lebanon's infrastructure and environment-but for its implications for all of the Middle East. What explains Hizballah's capture of two Israeli soldiers and the scale of Israel's retaliation? Why did the US reject an early cease-fire, instead encouraging Israel as Lebanese casualties mounted? Why did President Bush and Secretary of State Rice claim the Lebanese and the Arab world would welcome the "birth pangs" of a "new Middle East" designed by the US and Israel? And where will it all lead? Will Lebanon become a modern, non-sectarian state or will the confessional order be further entrenched?

Book Synopsis We Were Caught Unprepared by : Matt M. Matthews
Download or read book We Were Caught Unprepared written by Matt M. Matthews and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. The fact that the outcome of the 2006 Hezbollah-Israeli War was, at best, a stalemate for Israel has confounded military analysts. Long considered the most professional and powerful army in the Middle East, with a history of impressive military victories against its enemies, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) emerged from the campaign with its enemies undefeated and its prestige tarnished. This historical analysis of the war includes an examination of IDF and Hezbollah doctrine prior to the war, as well as an overview of the operational and tactical problems encountered by the IDF during the war. The IDF ground forces were tactically unprepared and untrained to fight against a determined Hezbollah force. ¿An insightful, comprehensive examination of the war.¿ Illustrations.
Download or read book Beirut 1958 written by Bruce Riedel and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2019-10-19 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Find out about the 1958 U.S. intervention that succeeded and apply those lessons to today's conflicts in the Middle East In July 1958, U.S. Marines stormed the beach in Beirut, Lebanon, ready for combat. They were greeted by vendors and sunbathers. Fortunately, the rest of their mission—helping to end Lebanon's first civil war—went nearly as smoothly and successfully, thanks in large part to the skillful work of American diplomats who helped arrange a compromise solution. Future American interventions in the region would not work out quite as well. Bruce Riedel's new book tells the now-forgotten story (forgotten, that is, in the United States) of the first U.S. combat operation in the Middle East. President Eisenhower sent the Marines in the wake of a bloody coup in Iraq, a seismic event that altered politics not only of that country but eventually of the entire region. Eisenhower feared that the coup, along with other conspiracies and events that seemed mysterious back in Washington, threatened American interests in the Middle East. His action, and those of others, were driven in large part by a cast of fascinating characters whose espionage and covert actions could be grist for a movie. Although Eisenhower's intervention in Lebanon was unique, certainly in its relatively benign outcome, it does hold important lessons for today's policymakers as they seek to deal with the always unexpected challenges in the Middle East. Veteran analyst Bruce Reidel describes the scene as it emerged six decades ago, and he suggests that some of the lessons learned then are still valid today. A key lesson? Not to rush to judgment when surprised by the unexpected. And don't assume the worst.

Book Synopsis Armies in Lebanon 1982–84 by : Sam Katz
Download or read book Armies in Lebanon 1982–84 written by Sam Katz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lebanese Civil War of 1975-76 caused 80,000 dead and totally split the country along factional lines. An estimated 50 different militias came into existence, and acts of violence were both individual and collective. In the midst of this explosive atmosphere, cross-border conflict between Israel and Lebanon intensified, culminating in Operation Peace for Galilee the invasion of Lebanon. This book offers a day-by-day account of the invasion and the subsequent siege of Beirut, an operation that resulted in both the PLO and Israel claiming victory. Numerous photographs and colour plates portray the uniforms and equipment of the Israeli, Palestinian and Multi-National forces.
