Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled between Toledo and Cleveland near the Sandusky Bay is a quiet lake region, a haven for vacationers and permanent residents alike. Claiming 107 miles of Lake Erie's coastline, Eastern Ottawa County, Ohio, is home to several coastal communities, including the small city of Port Clinton, the placid land masses of the Bass Islands, and the Marblehead Peninsula, home to a popular lighthouse. The author's window into this area, however, never overlooks the labor required to create and sustain its resort attractions. We meet the train conductors, teachers, mail carriers, ice harvesters, and community leaders who helped put Ottawa County on the map. We are offered many glimpses of boats on local waterways, some delivering fish, others ferrying passengers to the island, and still others in advance of their service during war time. And we are delivered a rare view of the many buildings that sadly failed to survive the area's catastrophic fires. This book is a living testimony to the rich and varied history of Ohio's Lake Erie communities. Resort oasis to some, manufacturing center to others, Ottawa County's texture and detail are brought vividly to life in this absorbing Images of America volume.

Book excerpt: This popular pilot guide covers the waters of the Channel Islands and the neighbouring French coast from the northeast of the Cherbourg Peninsula westwards along the Normandy and Brittany coasts to Ouessant. Coverage includes the Plateau des Roches Douvres as well as detailed sections on the navigable rivers. Peter Carnegie’s detailed and extensive exploration of these waters over many years is illustrated by his many photographs and accompanying plans detailing numerous transits to aid safe navigation in these waters of high tidal range and fast-moving currents. Annabel Finding’s revision of the work includes updated port information and plans and a number of new photographs. This sailing region can appear daunting to the first-time visitor, but ‘Carnegie’s book provides reassurance and so much practical advice that anyone using it will feel confident of success.' (Yachting Monthly). Whether for your first cruise or to assist you in exploring some of the more challenging passages and anchorages, this is the definitive cruising guide and a must-have companion.

Book excerpt: With text and hundreds of figures, charts, drawings, and color photos, this book covers the long, narrow islands that run near and all along the Gulf coast of the Florida peninsula, considered by geologists to be the most complicated barrier island system in the world. These 30 islands and inlets create a barrier along the 200-mile coast, protecting the mainland and the coastal bays from storms and heavy waves. The land on these islands is among the most expensive acres of real estate on the planet, and most of the islands are now heavily developed and populated, though some natural areas remain. This book looks first at the geological aspects of this barrier-inlet system, which is very young in terms of the history of our planet, only about 3,000 years, appearing since the great glaciers melted and sea level reached near its present position. The great diversity in morphology of the system is amazing given the low wave energy and small tidal range of this coast. Hurricanes have had a significant impact on this coast although they are less frequent here than on most of the Gulf of Mexico. There are very few sand dunes on these flat, narrow islands. Each chapter focuses on two main factors: the type of barrier island and the level of human development on the island.
