Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Church and National Education I. - To the Irish Church, its ministers and its people, the question of Education is now one of the deepest interest and of paramount importance. So it is universally felt to be. Whatever side men may take in the controversy respecting it, all allow that it is a question on the decision of which depends, in a great measure, the moral and religious condition of our country. II. - The state of the Church of Ireland on the education question is felt to be most unsatisfactory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the Points at Issue Between the Established Church and the National Board of Education in Ireland Of this petition I had never heard. But it is not my object, as far as I am concerned, to attribute any blame to the conductors. If the excellent Prelate, who of course must have taken the lead, had concluded that, as I have the happiness of agreeing with him on so many points, I concurred with him also m the prayer of this petition; and had he actually put down my name, I should not have been offended nor surprised, but rather have been grateful to his lordship for such a proof of free and friendly confidence. But let this matter stand as it may, - let it be that by an error of the Evening Mail, the diocese of Cashel has been mentioned, or that, by a momentary inadvertence on the part of Mr. Shaw, these words were introduced; still the appearance of them in the public papers has turned the balance, so as to decide me on the publication of the following pages. If I cannot reasonably suppose that they will have much influence upon others, it will be a satisfaction to my own mind not to be misunderstood on points so frequently discussed and on which it is so painful either to give an apparent consent by silence, or to engage in endless disputation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Observations on Church Reform, the Tithe Question and National Education in Ireland I. As to church reform. I wish to be clearly understood as very far from desiring a change as to the doctrine, liturgy, or ordinances Of the united Church of England and Ireland, as at present existing and established amongst us. I believe that here change would be no improvement. I use the expression in reference only to the administration of the system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Church From the Point of View of One of Its Layman Whatever is right to be done (and I am far from saying it is right much should not be done), surely this is not a question to be settled by a leap in the dark like that attempted last session. It is for the good of both Roman Catholics and Protestants, no less than of the whole nation, that the momentous interests concerned should be fully taken into account and settled on some large View of fairness to all, instead of for the gratification of religious ill-will or the party requirements of the day. The opposite of wrong is by no means always right. It may be true that the Established Church in Ireland is unjust, but it is easy in applying a remedy to commit a still greater injustice, and make the change, instead of a benefit, the source of worse mischief. There is a preliminary point on which it is necessary men's minds should be made up before the main question is reached. Is the question to be settled for the good of Ireland and the contentment of her people, or to please English voluntaries and for their contentment? It may seem a matter of course to say that the question is to be settled for the good of Ireland and the contentment of her people; but it is not so in fact. No doubt in theory the motive for the proposed change is to conciliate Roman Catholics and to make them more contented. But the whole manner of the change, and the frequent declara tions against any gain in a pecuniary sense to the Roman Catholic Church (however otherwise desirable or reasonable) out of the surplus ecclesiastical funds, which it is over and over again asserted are the property of the whole Irish people, is nothing less at best than, whilst granting a favour, to accompany it with so many insulting slaps in the face The case of those who contend that the Anglican Church should continue as it is may be bad, but assuredly it is not half so bad or so absurd as the case of those who in one breath contend that the ecclesiastical endow ments belong to the Irish people at large, and yet that the object in favour of which the great majority would wish to apply those endowments is on no account to have any share of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University Education in Ireland A Motion, made by an Irish Member at the close of the last Parliamentary session, which received little and rather slighting notice at the time, has raised some issues, both practical and theoretical, in the province of education, of very grave importance. The motion was a demand for a Charter for a Roman Catholic College established some twelve years ago in Dublin, and commonly known as "The Catholic University," though hitherto without the power of granting degrees. It was met on the part of the Government by a counter proposal, to the effect, that, instead of constituting a new university in Ireland by the grant of a charter, the Catholic establishment should be affiliated as a distinct college to one of the universities which now exist, to wit, the Queen's. This compromise was eagerly embraced by the mover, and in general by the representatives of the Catholic party in Parliament, Mr. Hennessy being the single dissentient. The precise form which the Government scheme is destined to take is not yet known; but it has been shadowed forth in a series of announcements which purport to be authoritative, and which - as they proceed from the section of Catholics whom the concession is designed to conciliate, and who have certainly through their leaders been in communication with the Government - may be assumed to embody, with more or less exactness, the principal features of the pending arrangement; and the prospect has elicited a discussion which at all events exhibits very clearly the hopes and the fears of the supporters and the opponents of the proposed change. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Office and Work of Universities The history of the past, and must needs be brought into being as well as into shape. It has to force its way abruptly into an existing state of things, which has never duly felt the absence of it; and it finds its most formidable obstacles, not in anything inherent in the undertaking itself, but in the circumambient atmosphere of misapprehension and prejudice into which it is received. Necessary as it may be, it has to be carried into effect in the presence of a reluctant or perplexed public opinion, and that, without any counterbalancing assistance whatever, as has commonly been the case with Universities, from royal favour or civil sanction. Patience under trial is God's way to good. Impatient. Action may end in deplorable and lasting evil. We have said nothing here about Disendowment. Its effect can best be described in the words of the Bishop of Lincoln, In my Diocese, said the Bishop, it would pauperise the Priesthood and paganise the poor. Woodward's "Thoughts on the Points at Issue Between the Established Church, and the National Board of Education" Protestants. The mass of the children in the neighbour hood do not go to the school. This is indeed a way of getting funds, but we doubt whether it is an honest way; it is one we should hesitate to adopt, whilst we ask nothing more than an Open sanction of such schools, as, in this case, are silently and secretly permitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Worthies of the Irish Church: Lectures Delivered in the Divinity School of the University of Dublin I have come now, wrote Dr. Stokes, in the concluding chapter of his anglo-norman to the limits which I have marked out for myself. Were I to go farther I should tread upon the boundaries of the modern history of Ireland. At some other time, if God spares me health and strength, I hope to deal with that subject. It was with the view of fulfilling the purpose here indicated, that so much of his time was Spent, in the closing years of his life, in amassing materials connected with the later history of the Church of which he was a member. The period which seems to have had most attraction for him was the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Had he lived to develop the scheme which he had devised, it appears almost certain that he would have told the story of that period, in the form of a series of biographies; and he often spoke of his intention of printing his lectures on Archbishop King. There can be no doubt that they at least were written with the ultimate purpose of publication. It has been the reproach of the Irish Church in the past that the mass of its members have had so little knowledge of its chequered history, and have shown so little interest in its story. If that reproach has now been to some extent removed, it is largely due to the unwearied labours of Professor Stokes. There was, indeed, earlier in the present century a distinguished band of scholars who devoted great learning and energy to the investigation of Irish Ecclesiastical History. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education in Ireland: Report of Speeches in the House of Commons, on Mr. Hamilton's Motion on the Above Subject, August 21, 1848 The question of Scriptural Education in Ireland is presented under a new aspect, since the principles on which public assistance is given have left no denomination of religionists unaided in England; nor any in Ireland, except the members of the Irish branch of the United Church by law established, whose conscientious convictions do not admit of their joining the Irish National System. The nation may yet feel ashamed of this singular and exclusive injustice, so much at variance with the honest fairness of the British people. It is evident that the real state of the case is not at present generally understood. In the following pages will be found a special and revised Report of the speeches of the two Members for the University of Dublin, on the Motion of Mr. Hamilton on behalf of the Church Education Society in Ireland, brought forward in the House of Commons on the 21st of August last, with the answers of Lord John Russell and Sir William Somerville on the part of the Government; to which are appended two articles from the "Morning Herald" and one from the "Times" on the subject. The main arguments and facts of the case, and comments upon them, are thus fairly submitted, in the hope that a sound and correct judgment may be formed on this important question, which involves principles materially affecting every Protestant in the empire. Sir William Verner, Mr. Grogan, Captain Jones, and Mr. Newdegate spoke also in favour of the Motion; Mr. Sharman Crawford, Mr. Osborne, Mr. Reynolds, and Mr. Hume against it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Patrick, and the Early Church of Ireland Was there ever such a man as Saint Patrick? It was wise to consider this question before attempting to write his life. By some it has been doubted, by a few others denied. But in such cases there has usually been a strong party feeling, or an ignorance of certain original sources of history. There is a distinction to be made between the myth and the man. Imagination has given us a Robinson Crusoe; the real man was Alexander Selkirk. The Saint Patrick of the ordinary Irish heart is certainly very mythical. The portrait of him was drawn from imagination; the colours are not those of the fifth, but those of the twelfth or fourteenth century. The deeds are manufactured to order and by the job, and the life is made of the baldest legends. This Patrick is a fully-developed Papist of the time, when certain errors pre vailed, which he could not have known in the fifth century. He is constantly working miracles, some of them very trifling, and some of them astounding, beyond all that was ever recorded of a mere man. For his especial benefit divine revelations are made to him, which cause a greater amazement than any ever made to Moses or Paul. He is too wonderful to be real. The myth business was entirely overdone. The manufacturers did not perceive that com mon sense might some time be restored to the human race. In the Middle Ages it was customary with the monks to exercise their scholars in writing the lives of imaginary saints; asserting that it was a pious and very improving way of exercising the imagination! L The best of these fanciful biographies were laid aside for future use; and after the lapse of a few ages, when their statements could not be disproved, were produced and published as genuine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Origin, Doctrines, and Discipline: Of the Early Irish Church The following Essays have been written with the View of illustrating the origin of the Irish Church, and showing that the doctrines which she held in the earliest ages of her existence were the same as those which, after a lapse of more than fourteen centuries, she now professes. Founded with the blessing and sanction of Christ's Vicar on earth; connected from the beginning with the rock of Peter, and participating in its solidity, our Church has been ever zealous in promoting the blessings of true religion, giving, at the same time, to the world the noblest examples of courage, devotedness, and fidelity, in preserving the sacred deposit of the faith committed to her by St. Patrick.
