After thousands of years of wars, famine, plagues, disease, and man’s inhumanity to both man and other life forms on the planet, is humanity finally ready for an evolutionary step? A step that will dissolve the invisible chains that enslave us. After a lifetime of research, Mr. Brown has gathered together the keys to our past that he believes will unlock the next evolutionary steps. His research covers the clues left throughout history in mythology, religions, and philosophy. He explains why we are where we are today. Then he examines some of the many ways we can recover our humanity and evolve as he believes we were intended. Book excerpt: Just outside Toronto, a 14-year-old Canadian girl was auctioned on the internet for men to purchase by the hour. A young woman was taken by slave traders from an African war zone to Edmonton to earn greater profits by exploiting her in prostitution. A gang called Wolfpack recruited teenagers in Quebec and sold them for sex to high-profile men in the community. The global problem of human trafficking is only beginning to be recognized in Canada, even though it has been hidden in plain sight. In Invisible Chains, Benjamin Perrin, an award-winning law professor and policy expert, exposes cases of human trafficking, recording in-depth interviews with people on the front lines--police officers, social workers, and the victims themselves--and bringing to light government records released under access-to-information laws.

Throughout my life, he has been so faithful to me. I failed him so many times, but he never failed me once. I wanted to serve him on a broader level. So I asked my heavenly Father to please use me in the way that he knows best. I was pleasantly surprise when he suggested to write this little book, Unseen Hands That Lead the Way. His voice and guidance were so very clear to me. And his presence was so real. I have never experienced the presence of God in such a profound way as when I was writing this book. It drew me in a deeper relationship with the one that I love so very much, and that is my precious Lord Jesus. This little book means so much to me because I can share the love of God with those I don’t know or will never meet this side of heaven. If I had a thousand tongue to speak with, it would still not be enough to express my gratitude for the one who left the splendor of heaven, to come to this cesspool of sin, and to save a wretch like me. Oh, how I love him so. But it is my holy and precious Jesus that loves me even more. This book is not about Pearly Stanley. It is all about the love of God for me. I pray it blesses you the same way that it blessed me.

She is reluctant at first, but when the unthinkable happens to Ruth, Isabel realizes her loyalty is available to the bidder who can provide her with freedom. From acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson comes this compelling, impeccably researched novel that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual.

Book excerpt: Jacqueline is a young Creole slave in antebellum New Orleans. An unusual stranger who has haunted her dreams since childhood comes to stay as a guest in her master's house. Soon after his arrival, members of the household die mysteriously and Jacqueline is suspected of murder. Despite her fear of the stranger, Jacqueline befriends him and he helps her escape. While running from the slave catchers, they meet conjurers, a loup-garou, and a traveling circus of supernatural freaks. She relies on ancestral magic to guide her and finds the strength to conquer her fears on her journey."Vampires are terrifying creatures, driven by insatiable, cannibalistic hunger and murderous urges. I was glad to have one at my side..." So writes Michelle Renee Lane in her chilling and charming adventure INVISIBLE CHAINS. The unbridled horrors of Delta slave masters are met by the mysterious powers of supernatural creatures but human brutality can only be held at bay by the pure heart and pure magic of Lane's superb narrator.--Jewelle Gomez, author of THE GILDA"Lane's absorbing tale of a woman born into slavery, who learns to use magic passed down to her from ancestors to survive held my attention from page one to the end. Book excerpt: There are more than 40 million enslaved people in the world today. This is overwhelming. A number so large leaves us asking, What could I even do to help? In his book Vulnerable: Rethinking Human Trafficking, Raleigh Sadler, president and founder of Let My People Go, makes the case that anyone can fight human trafficking by focusing on those who are most often targeted. This book invites the reader to understand their role in the problem of human trafficking, but more importantly, their role in the solution. Human trafficking can be defined as the exploitation of vulnerability for commercial gain. Using the power of story and candid interviews, Sadler seeks to discover how ordinary people can fight human trafficking by recognizing vulnerability and entering in. As vulnerable people, we can empower other vulnerable people, because Christ was made vulnerable for us.

When we examine the physical world at various "resolutions" of detail--from the vast, unending expanse of the universe to the minute microorganisms that inhabit our planet--we can discover a lot of things about God. Science and faith in God are not opposed to each other. This book highlights how scientific study can reveal several things about the character of God--especially His power, greatness, and wisdom. If we open our hearts to seek and understand the truth, we can learn many things about Him without having to sacrifice common sense, logic, and rational thinking. This colorful and picture-filled book takes you through many examples in nature that clearly display God's amazing work of creation and, in the process, provokes you to awe and wonder! The Invisible Things of God also introduces a slightly different perspective about the often-misunderstood concept of faith. It also reminds you of the impending reality of God's final judgment and His easily attainable, loving free gift of salvation from eternal suffering. It describes the sweetness, blessedness, and joy associated with knowing and walking with the Creator of this universe based on the author's own relationship with God.

Book excerpt: A Best Book of 2021 by NPR and The Washington Post Part graphic novel, part memoir, Wake is an imaginative tour de force that tells the “powerful” (The New York Times Book Review) story of women-led slave revolts and chronicles scholar Rebecca Hall’s efforts to uncover the truth about these women warriors who, until now, have been left out of the historical record. Women warriors planned and led revolts on slave ships during the Middle Passage. They fought their enslavers throughout the Americas. And then they were erased from history. Wake tells the “riveting” (Angela Y. Davis) story of Dr. Rebecca Hall, a historian, granddaughter of slaves, and a woman haunted by the legacy of slavery. The accepted history of slave revolts has always told her that enslaved women took a back seat. But Rebecca decides to look deeper, and her journey takes her through old court records, slave ship captain’s logs, crumbling correspondence, and even the forensic evidence from the bones of enslaved women from the “negro burying ground” uncovered in Manhattan. She finds women warriors everywhere. Using a “remarkable blend of passion and fact, action and reflection” (NPR), Rebecca constructs the likely pasts of Adono and Alele, women rebels who fought for freedom during the Middle Passage, as well as the stories of women who led slave revolts in Colonial New York. We also follow Rebecca’s own story as the legacy of slavery shapes her life, both during her time as a successful attorney and later as a historian seeking the past that haunts her. Illustrated beautifully in black and white, Wake will take its place alongside classics of the graphic novel genre, like Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis and Art Spiegelman’s Maus. This story of a personal and national legacy is a powerful reminder that while the past is gone, we still live in its wake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is understood that the first recorded history of slavery had its beginning in the United States in 1619, when approximately twenty Africans were brought by a Dutch soldier and sold to the English colony of Jamestown, Virginia as indentured servants. The transformation from indentured servitude to racial slavery happened gradually. It wasnt until 1661 that a reference to slavery entered in Virginia law, directed at Caucasian servants who ran away with a black servant. It wouldnt be until the Slave Codes of 1705 that the status of African-Americans as slaves would be sealed. This would last for another 160 years, until after the end of the American Civil War with the ratification of the 13th Amendment in December 1865. However, it must be noted that the first imported Africans were brought as indentured servants not slaves. They were required, as white indentured servants to serve nine years. Many were brought to the British North American colonies, specifically Jamestown, Virginia in 1620. It is most interesting to make note of the fact that slavery was subsequently legalized in the following states: 1641 Massachusetts becomes the first colony to legalize slavery. 1650 Connecticut legalizes slavery. 1661 Virginia officially recognizes slavery by statute. 1662 A Virginia statute declares that children born would have the same status as their mother. 1663 Maryland legalizes slavery. 1664 Slavery is legalized in New York and New Jersey. The shift from indentured servants to African slaves was prompted by a dwindling class of former servants who had worked through the terms of their indentures and thus became competitors to their former masters. These newly freed servants were rarely able to support themselves comfortably, and the tobacco industry was increasingly dominated by large planters. This caused domestic unrest culminating in Bacons Rebellion. Eventually, chattel slavery became the norm in regions dominated by plantations that were owned by Englishmen who lived in Great Britain, where the British courts had made a series of contradictory rulings on the legality of slavery, which encouraged several thousand slaves to flee the newly-independent United States as refugees along with the retreating British in 1783.

Book excerpt: Fifty Years in Chains: Or, the Life of an American Slave (1859) was an abridged and unauthorized reprint of the earlier Slavery in the United States (1836). In the narratives, Ball describes his experiences as a slave, including the uncertainty of slave life and the ways in which the slaves are forced to suffer inhumane conditions. He recounts the qualities of his various masters and the ways in which his fortune depended on their temperament. As slave narrative scholar William L. Andrews has noted, Ball's oft-repeated narrative directly influenced the manner and matter of later fugitive slave.
