Book excerpt: This report draws on the longitudinal Immigration Database which links immigrant characteristics at landing with their subsequent income tax filings to examine the economic performance of immigrants landed between 1980 and 1995. The focus is on the post-landing migration patterns of immigrants within Canada. A secondary purpose is to demonstrate the multiple levels of geography that can be explored using the Database and to present some new & unique information regarding the spatial concentrations of immigrants made possible by the immigration-taxation linkage that underlies the Database. The seven sections of the report cover the following: terminology & definitions of measures of migration; ultimate impacts of secondary migration; levels of in-migration compared to out-migration for each province; how soon immigrant tax-filers move after being admitted, and trends in in- and out-migration for selected tax-filer cohorts; characteristics of movers and non-movers; and comparison of various indicators of economic performance, including the level & incidence of employment earnings and the incidence of welfare payments.

Book excerpt: Based on the longitudinal Immigration Data Base, this research found that the post-landing interprovincial migration of newly landed immigrants led to a further concentration in Ontario and British Columbia. Underlying this pattern was the fact that each of these two provinces had a relatively strong economy, large immigrant communities, and a major international airport. This further concentration of relocating immigrants is problematic in the sense that it contributed to the weakening of the political powers of the economically weak provinces. With respect to immigration classes, the interprovincial net transfer was much stronger for those in the investor, entrepreneur, and refugee classes than for those in the family and assisted relative classes. The research also suggested that the deconcentration and widespread dispersal in the 1995-2000 interstate migration of the immigrants in the U.S. can not serve as a harbinger for a general reversal in the interprovincial migration of immigrants in Canada.

[...] The net declines recorded in British Columbia and Manitoba likely reflect the relative strength of the Alberta and Saskatchewan econo- mies. [...] Indeed, Alberta, which accounts for 11% of the national population, managed to attract over 100,000 in-migrants (almost one-third of total migrants) from other provinces in 2012 - a higher reading than compared to the hey-day of the oil boom in 2005-06. [...] The unemployment rates in these provinces are compared to the rest of Canada during the recovery period. [...] The unemployment rate in B. C. had been rising the interprovincial blow in migration in Manitoba has been steadily relative to the rest of Canada - albeit from record the steady annual inflows of international immigrants over lows - since 2007, surpassing the national average in 2011.
