Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Inter-Oceanic Ship Canal Question Circumstances which occurred nearly a quarter of a century ago, briefly mentioned in the following paper read before the American Geographical Society of New York, fixed my attention on the question of the possibility of the construction of an inter-oceanic ship canal across this continent. Owing to the approaching struggle into which we soon passed, and the perturbation which preceded and followed it, no possibility of making further explorations Occurred for years. In the early part of the winter of 1866 I was in Washington, in command of a vessel of war. At my request, rear-admiral Chas. H. Davis, Superintendent of the Naval Observatory, prepared a map on a large scale of the narrow part of this continent for General Grant, with whom I had the pleasure Of discussing what was then known and what was still in doubt respecting the topography of that region. This led to one or more visits to Mr. Seward, then Secretary of State, whose reception of the subject of making further explorations at that time made General Grant averse to seeing him further in relation to this matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interoceanic Canal and the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty Equality of tolls has also been treated as a feature, or perhaps rather as a condition, of neutralization. Little need be said on this subject, since a discriminative policy, even if it did not lead to the immediate building of another canal, would merely provoke retaliation in some other form and prove in the end to be impracticable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Is a Ship Canal Practicable?: Notes, Historical and Statistical, Upon the Projected Routes Fro an Interoceanic Ship Canal Between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans The Emperor was induced to intervene. M. Thouvenel, the French Minister at Constantinople, was requested to enlighten the mind of the Sublime Porte as to the views and wishes of France. The introduction of machinery now became a matter of necessity. Ten millions of dollars were expended for this object, and forty enor mous dredges were soon at work upon the excavations. One of the novelties in the construction of these machines was a provision for carrying off the excavated material by means of a stream of water. One of the workmen, it is said, noticed that when removed in this way the slimy earth spread over a wide surface and became soon indurated, instead of flowing back into the place of excavation. It also possessed the further advantage of fixing the mobile sand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Inter-Oceanic Canal: An Historical Sketch of the Canal Idea The Chairman Ladies and Gentlemen: this last session of the Panama Pacific Historical Congress will be distinguished by the reading Of a paper on The American inter-oceanic Canal: an Historical Sketch Of the Canal Idea, by Mr. Rudolph J. Taussig, Secretary of the Panama Pacific International Exposition. Mr. Taussig will tell the story Of the idea Of making a canal. It is practically the same thing as the history of the idea of making the Panama Pacific Canal, which opens a new era in the history Of the Pacific Ocean. I have the aid on the platform here Of two distinguished dele gates, one from Spain and the other from Japan. During his presence at the Congress, by many speeches and in many ways, Professor Altamira has endeared himself to those who are responsible for this Historical Congress. Professor N. Murakami has, in the excellent paper he read today at palo Alto, shown that the new land Of Japan is as interested in things Of the Pacific Ocean as the Old land of Spain. TO support them two former presidents Of the American Historical Association, Professor Turner, Of Harvard University, and Professor Jameson are here present. A little later we are to be favored by another former president of the American Historical Association, who, while he has written history, has also made it, and who has promised to be present shortly to tell us how he made the Canal, which Mr. Taussig will trace from its original idea. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States and the Panama Canal If constructed with the goodwill and guarantee of the great commercial nations, the canal cannot fail to become a blessing to the world's commerce and a great financial success. Most of the rapidly increasing trade between Europe and the Pacific shores, would prefer a passage - of at the most but two days' length - through the canal, assisted largely by the gulf stream, in employing that route and saving three thousand miles, to the tedious, stormy and dangerous rounding of Cape Hem. The yearly increasing trade of Japan and China with the East Coast of the Americas, with Cuba and the West Indies, as well as with a great portion of Europe, would largely patronize the canal, and the greater portion of the traffic between the Atlantic and Pacific shores in both Americas would find the Ist canal route advantageous above all others.
