Book excerpt: This paper examines the argument that restricting domestic firms' production abroad by for example, imposing a tax on foreign source income, can increase domestic welfare and alter the income distribution to favor labor. These arguments follow directly from a characterization of the international producer as a facilitator of capital flows. The available evidence suggests, however, that U.S. multinational firms have a much broader role than transferring abundant U.S. capital abroad. In this paper the firm Is viewed as able to compete abroad for a variety of reasons, including an ability to make use of technological and other cost advantages over local producers. Then, the effect of its operations abroad on the domestic capital stock is no longer so obvious. It is argued that at most a part of the marginal capital employed abroad is obtained at the expense of the capital stock of the domestic economy. The paper then presents a simple model which indicates that domestic labor can either gain or lose relative to capital, and home country welfare can either increase or decline, as a result of restricting the foreign operations of domestic firms. The results depend on the ultimate source of the capital placed abroad, the relative factor intensity of production by the multinational firm, and whether the multinational firm produces the home country's importable or exportable good. Since none of the cases considered seems totally implausible, the case for reducing international production cannot be made on the traditional grounds without further empirical evidence.

Book excerpt: Given the level of its production in the U.S., a firm that produces more abroad tends to have fewer employees in the U.S. and to pay slightly higher salaries and wages to them. The most likely explanation seems to be that the larger a firm's foreign production, the greater its ability to allocate the more labor-intensive and less skill-intensive portions of its activity to locations outside the United States. This relationship is stronger among manufacturing firms than among service industry firms, probably because services are less tradable than manufactured goods or components, and service industries may therefore be less able to break up the production process to take advantage of differences in factor prices.

Introduction "Global interdependence is pervasive. It is not only political and military....[but] also environmental.... Perhaps the most important aspect of interdependence however is economic." (Terpstra, 1993, Preface) Today more and more firms operate internationally and in some cases even globally. In almost all major economies of the world, the significance of domestic and/or foreign-based transnational corporations is increasing. Such corporations, directly or indirectly, account for a large part of world trade in goods and services (cf. Nilsson, Dicken 1996 p.1). Attempts to theorise such international developments are widespread; therefore, there is no such thing as a "universal" theory. However, the emphasis of most theories tends to be on how businesses should internationalise rather than on why they should do so. Most contributions in literature focus on strategies and structures of international firms but do not explain the reasons of internationalisation. The main aim of this essay is therefore to give an outline of the reasons why companies choose to go international. Using only relevant theories and different examples from business, it shall be demonstrated that there is not only "one" motive for companies to choose international expansion but that there is a variety of causes depending on the respective internal and external environment of the different companies. In the following, under II.) there will be an overview of different reasons for companies to choose international expansion; these reasons will be substantiated by different statements and theories from literature and in each case illustrated by relevant examples. Under III.) finally, there will be a conclusion. The expositions of II.) will be analysed and a prospect into the future of globalisation will be made. [...]

Book excerpt: The degree of internationalizaton of the enterprise or business sectors of many countries, as measured by the ratio of direct investment abroad to domestic wealth or assets, or of assets or employment abroad to that at home, has been growing over the last twenty years or more. The exception to this trend is the United States, in which the extent of internationalization, after growing until the 1970s, has stagnated or decreased somewhat. The level of internationalization of U.S. firms in the 1970s and 1980s was above that of Germany and especially above those of Japan and Korea. Canada was close to the U.S. and UK firms were by far the most internationalized. The differences among the country levels and trends seem to reflect country size and divergences between the competitiveness of countries and of their companies, including those that result from exchange-rate movements.
