Book Synopsis The Impacts of Automotive Plant Closure by : Andrew Beer
Download or read book The Impacts of Automotive Plant Closure written by Andrew Beer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic restructuring has been a notable feature of so-called mature industrial economies such as the UK and Australia in the last two decades, with deregulation, privatisation, technological change and globalisation combining to reshape such economies. Some industries have grown, while others have declined. Moreover, while overall employment in the UK and Australia has grown, many newly-created positions require skills not found in the industries shedding labour, or are in casualised and low paid occupations. Many lesser-skilled workers leaving declining industries are therefore at risk of long-term unemployment or leaving the workforce entirely. Both mental and physical health can be affected after redundancy. It is therefore crucial that the measures put in place in many domains of social policy (such as formal health policy, employment assistance, community development, housing assistance and so on) to adequately address the difficulties confronting this group. This volume takes a closer look at the impact of manufacturing - notably automotive - plant closures in the UK (Birmingham) and Australia (Adelaide) in recent years and policy responses to those closures. It attempts to tease out differences in policy response and effectiveness, and attempts to identify areas where policy could be made to work better in terms of adjusting to large scale manufacturing change and resulting job losses. In so doing, it begins, for the first time we believe, to take a comparative approach to understanding the impact of plant closures and policy responses. This book was published as a special issue of Policy Studies.

Book Synopsis Proximity, Distance and Diversity by : Päivi Oinas
Download or read book Proximity, Distance and Diversity written by Päivi Oinas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together a wide range of empirical studies from around the world (Sweden, Norway, Austria, Germany, France, UK, Israel, Russia, China, Taiwan, Argentina, Canada), framed in related contemporary theoretical frameworks, this book examines the question of the significance of proximate vs. more distant relationships for economic agents' performance and local economic development. While this question has been the subject of intense debates in recent years, it is obvious that proximity and distance are not explanatory factors as such. The book argues for the need to understand the aims of economic relationships, the nature of the regional environment in which they originate, and the scale at which they operate. The book suggests that the notions of diversity, innovativeness, maturity and multiple scales should be incorporated into the debates on the significance of proximity for economic performance.
Book Synopsis Restructuring Industry and Territory by : Anna Giunta
Download or read book Restructuring Industry and Territory written by Anna Giunta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the current trends in regional economic development in Europe, Restructuring Industry and Territory explores ways in which the restructuring of industry and territorial development relate to each other, their emergent interdependency and role in economic development. The book argues that the structural and cultural features of regions play an important part in helping or hindering concerted policies for regional development. Using case studies from different industries in a variety of regions, the contributors show that the pressures for restructuring, such as internationalisation or even 'globalisation', have been mediated by formerly nationally rooted industries in Europe becoming increasingly integrated, due to the ongoing processes of technological and organisational innovation, and political regulation.

Book Synopsis Geographies of Economies by : Roger Lee
Download or read book Geographies of Economies written by Roger Lee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting out to explore the intersections of economy and geography, this book brings together contributions from the world's top economic geographers. Over forty contributors draw upon contemporary theory and experience to explore the cultural and social constitution of economic geographies, processes of globalisation and new forms of political regulation and practice. Although focusing upon 'new' economic geography, the book also illustrates the many connections with previous scholarship as scholars seek to reconstruct the traditions of political economy to understand the contemporary world. Highlighting and illustrating contemporary developments, the book opens up discussion about the implications of the complex geographies involved. In pointing to new directions of research and debate, this major statement in state of the art economic geography demonstrates the central relevance of economic geography not only in understanding the trajectories of change but in proposing alternatives.

Book Synopsis International Capital Mobility and Asset Demand by : W. J. Jansen
Download or read book International Capital Mobility and Asset Demand written by W. J. Jansen and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International financial transactions have become less regulated and less costly over the past two decades. This study, consisting of two parts, examines several issues related to this increase in international capital mobility. The first part is devoted to the estimation of the correlation of saving and investment, which should be zero under capital mobility, according to Feldstein and Horioka. Questions, addressed are: What are the implications of the intertemporal budget constraint? Should time series analysis or cross-section analysis be used? The second part of the study focuses on the mean-variance portfolio model, which is an important benchmark model in financial economics but is strongly rejected in empirical tests. Here questions include: Can capital controls explain why the mean-variance model performs so badly? What is the role of adjustment costs?

Book Synopsis On the Theory and Measurement of Comparative Advantage by : Olga Memedović
Download or read book On the Theory and Measurement of Comparative Advantage written by Olga Memedović and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thoroughly revised, in-depth analysis of the American presidency by a major scholar in the field. The main goal of the text is to explain how the president's ability to implement policy is circumscribed by several major factors: *the Madisonian separation of powers; *the decentralized power structure in Congress; *the number of cross-party coalitions needed to pass legislation; *a slow-moving federal bureaucracy; and *the powerful influence of special interest groups opposed to many presidential initiatives. Included in this second edition is coverage of the first two years of the Clinton presidency and a special chapter on the emergence of the presidential branch—the White House staff—and its displacement of the cabinet and the executive departments as the foremost decision-making agents in the federal government (a unique chapter not found in other texts). Since highly unstable relations between the president and congress have become the hallmark of our national government, especially in this era of divided government, a new chapter on the president and congress has been added to the text. The growing role of the vice president, an original chapter in the first edition, has been expanded and updated to include the Gore vice presidency. The chapter on proposed reforms of the presidency received wide approval in the first edition. In the second edition special attention is devoted to the proposal to abolish the Electoral College and replace it with direct election of the president. This edition focuses heavily on the activist presidential leadership of the modern presidency, but notes its perishable nature. High presidential approval ratings, as George Bush demonstrated, cannot be stockpiled or deposited in the bank, to be drawn upon later. Along the way the author makes several major points: 1. the excessive demands that the American public imposes on its presidents threaten to turn the nation's highest office into a series of one-term presidents; 2. the decline of political parties as vehicles for mobilizing presidential support has forced the nation's chief executive to go over the heads of congress and directly to the public to solicit support for his policies; and 3. the emerging dangers of electronic democracy and national referenda and the potential rise of a plebiscitary president all pose more imminent threats to our shared powers system than most presidential-watchers have been willing to concede.
